My parents couldn't if they wanted... The cannucks are on strike because they are lazy. Do you know at all waht is going on? The other unions just joined forces to create more bargaining power and leech somemore $$$$ outta a broke system. Sure I support the nurses, but not the parasites that are striking at the same time... opportunists... once again, you know not of what you speak...

Nor do you I think...

You call retroactive pay cuts reasonable? How about breaking contracts?

If you think "the cannucks... are lazy" then maybe you should just fuck off back to where you came from. the_finger.gif

Boo fucking hoo, you can't buy a beer. You even got papers to be working here???

Maybe the system is broke because they are trying to wring the last pennies out of people who then have little $ left to spend or pay taxes with.

The unions are pissed off beacuse we have a corrupt premier trying to screw the province over. They have my full support if they wanna go out and tell this government to f#$% itself.

Like I said. It was the nurses that I supported. Don't confuse those that are into multi-union solidarity with the one union. I support the nurses, but the rest are simply opportunists reaping benefeit off of the plight of the nurses. I gots papers, but I am not a union card holder. Don't worry, I WILL leave this moraly depraved province in 3 short weeks... just gotta get in a lil' more scabbin. wink.gif

You really don't know what you are talking about, do you? The recently completed strike was by health care SUPPORT workers, not nurses. Support workers include licensed practical nurses (as well as cleaners, lab techs, etc.), but you are talking about Registered Nurses...they are in a different union. The nurses weren't even that supportive of this strike - so much for solidarity - it was the other public sector unions who have their own contract negotiations coming up that were worried that the same thing would happen to them (tearing up contracts, retroactive rolling back of wages, widespread layoffs).

Look around Canada (but not the US...that is a different society with different values on equity and fairness) and you will find few examples of governments that impose retroactive wage rollbacks on top of imminent widespread contracting out/layoffs...Campbell brought this on himself - if he had offered 0% wage increases, and limited layoffs, the union would have happily accepted - they know they are overpaid compared to the rest of the country, and know they have to wait for other provinces to catch up before they get more increases...but no, Campbell chose to kick them in the nuts to score political points with the business lobby and the neo-cons. That tactic has bitten him the ass...most citizens were supportive of the strike action, and were outraged that the gov't would make someone who just got a huge pay cut pay back some of last month's wages. That is just disrespectful...if they are "essential" service workers, treat them like they are essential...and that starts with a little respect.

BTW, I am not a union lover by any means. Shit, I am on the management side in the local government sector. But I really did find Campbell's negotiating tactics odious and counterproductive.

Ummm, it's a private distribution company that's on strike - nothing to do with government at all. The provincial government is actually working to arrange alternative distribution so Labbatt's and Molson's can still get their beer onto the shelves in order to allow all you sorry piss-tanks to fend off the D.T.s a little longer. the_finger.gif

And regarding the Hospital Employees strike, just so people understand exactly the implications of a "retroactive pay cut": not only do you not get a pay increase (which most people could have accepted), but you actually have to write a cheque to your employer to refund them some of the money you were paid over the past couple of months. That's just petty, vindictive, spiteful behaviour on the part of Gordon Campbell, and it blew up in his face. No surprise there, either: this guy has demonstrated a rare talent for incompetent bungling. You could conceivably argue that some of his ideas are valid, but his implementation of those ideas has been laughably inept.
