I've had plenty of experiences with people telling me how much they dislike what America stands for, but almost never have I had anyone mistreat me because I am American. Furthermore, unless you are a complete asshole, it is good for America if we travel and meet people around the world and have them see that we Americans are just people too -- isn't it? Unfortunately that doesn't magically insulate American travelers from the assholes who think killing and kidnapping will make a difference. I gave up a good carreer as an archeologist in the Middle East because Americans were being taken hostage right and left by the Shiites in Iran and their backers in the middle east. Saying that we should travel the world proclaiming our American citizenship to everyone like we have some sort of right to do so is an admirable way to risk death. Your rights will be buried with you. Terry Waite spent seven years as a hostage because he was American. I was doing the same job he was when he got taken. Try facing that reality from a shithole in the middle of the unknown world with no hope for rescue before you give advice from your living room sofa. Â Returned home thurs night from a week of business travel to Anchorage to find the rear of my car completely smashed in my apt parking lot. No note, and also no rear window, and a taco'ed rear hatch door on the Suby. Made for a cold commute Fri at -25F with the windows down so as to not commit suicide by car exhaust. Â I hope duct tape will stick at these temps, it's -42 and falling with a thick layer of ice fog out there right now. After I tape it up, I will come inside and thaw out, drink some Red Hook IPAs and ESBs (on sale for $5 sixer). Then I will go back out and walk around my parking lot to see if I notice any bumper or trailer hitch damage on someone truck or SUV. It is where i have spent a little over 1/2 of my life. If i said that living here did not shape me, I would be a liar. The other 1/2 of the equation is that I feel that anyone who will treat anyone differently based on their nationality will continue to do so until their bluffs are called. I was accosted in Ukraine because i spoke russian in the wrong city, but i do not speak ukrainian, so i had little recourse. I feel that they were as wrong as the people who persecute Americans adn as wrong as the Americans that persecute other nationalities. Its that simple. Persecution is wrong and if you just let it happen, you are not only doing nothing, you are contributing to the problem. Obviously, if you life is seriously in danger, do whatever it takes, but lying about who you are just to be more accepted is ridiculous.
