How can I filter people who post?

I enjoy reading this site but I have limited time & also a dial up connection which is very slow. Anotherwards, i'll go to a topic that pertains to me, spend forever loading the page, and then find that 90% of the page is just the same 4 or 5 posters that in my opinion rarely have anything super valuable to contribute. Is their a way I can load this site and filter out about 4-5 posters (their posts wouldn't even appear)? I have mentioned this to others and their seems to be a great deal of interest in this. This would save me time, help me get the beta I need, and would also save my eyes. I also bet that with this feature the number of visits by those who had been previously turned off to this site would go up ten fold. Plus it gives us a more representational view of the cascade climbing community. If anyone knows a way, please post it so that all of us can see how. Having the filter not work in the "spray" section would be OK though.

Thanks

PS. I realize that their would be occasionaly lapses in conversations and some of the dialogue wouldn't make sense, but that is OK with me because I have limited time.

Filtering out posters is not going to save you loading time per se, it's just text. It's probably the images that are killing you. You can set up your profile so you don't load the avatar images, but that probably won't help much since most of those images are so small, but it couldn't hurt. You can also disable the signatures. You can also set how many posts per page are loaded at a time. That might help.

Go to Rec.climbing.com or whatever if you don't want the spray. Unfortunately for you, most posters on that site are a bunch of gumbies with a collective experience of a mountaineers intermediate course between them. If you want the grade A straight dope beta you might have to put up with a couple tasteless jokes about sheep fucking and the like. But reality is, contrary to your assertions, the majority of northwest climbers aren't square lobotomized homos.

A prime example of the nonsense that gets posted and clutters up the poor bastard trying to get good information. Keep it in spray. madgo_ron.gif

C'mon folks. I think the premise is correct: there are some posters who seem to clutter up nearly every thread on this site, rarely have anything to say and are just plain annoying. I've been busy at work lately, so my contribution to this situation has diminished and so too has my reading, but it appears to me that in the last week or so some of the contstant B.S. has moderated somewhat. And my list of the top 5 offenders might differ from yours. But I think most of us would agree that it is indeed the case that some people seem to do little but piss all over the place. Jon and Timmy have made it clear that they want this site to be a home for those who are bored at work and want to spray, just as much as they want it to be a place for serious discussion of climbing, but just as you have a right to suggest B.S.er goes elsewhere, B.S.er has a right to want not to find the same inane B.S. all the time.

This is doable, we could have a "mute" user feature, but, i don't think it would help with page load times at all. Like it was said above, a post is usually only text, unless an image has been embeded then some time would be saved but that isn't very frequent.

if image loading is taking time (graemlins and other nonsense) simply disable photos in your web browser perferences.

muting users would take some time to develop and it makes me wonder if it is worth my time to make such a feature....

their post would still be there, the text just wouldn't display so there would still be a bunch of blank posts on a thread.

the truth of the matter is, no matter how hard we try, how much time we spend, we will never make this site what everyone wants it to be. sorry if the spray is much to handle at times but its what makes this site, and the world go around.

take me tips up top to reduce page load times, and learn to skim.

Like I've said all along, I think "spray" should be fair game for the retarded like me. You guys can have the other threads as far as I'm concerned. I only jumped into this thread because of the "waaaaaa - factor".

Ditto. I rarely spray out side of spray, and try to contribute when I can cool.gif

While I don't particularly want to do this because of various reasons, mainly a person's contributional (if it isn't a word now it is) merit being a total grey area, there is something we could do. We have the ability of restricting what forums somebody is allowed to post in. For instance we could make a "shitlist" group which would only be able to post to a specific forum, for instance only spray. If we got enough complaints about someone or the moderators were getting a little ticked off we could put someone in this group and give them time to "reflect".

I agree with mattp's sentiments, I feel there is a group of people who type innane stuff with lots of icons and hit the post button while not really thinking about what they are saying or trying to contribute anything. It's nothing personal against these people, it's just irritating, and I think there becomes a point when you do have really something valuable to say but people have just learned to ignore you. Remember you don't have to reply to every damn thing someone says.
