  1. i use a TNF cats meow ... the newer versions are en-rated to 20F ... ive taken my down below that with no issues cost is < $150 generally less than 3 lb
  2. had issues with dead bird, took a while for them to get back to me on their harness ... i had exchanged it out at mec in the meantime apple is very good ... swapped out a motherboard on a laptop that was out of warranty for free ... id buy from them again anything bought at mec or rei is excellent as if it aint making you happy, theyll make you happy same with eddie baeur ... swapped out a down sweater for someone that was leaking ... no questions asked or receipt needed
  3. losing weight off my ginourmous belly - just a matter of time and willpower - might actually save money as i eat less - might actually live longer ... didnt they say the greatest predictor of health is waist fat? - makes me look younger so i can still pick up those yung hawt gurls - gives me better sex drive - feels like you actually achieved something - great story for friends and family ... lost X lbs - get me in better shape ... not to mention i might even climb more losing it going lighter gear wise - dont bring shiet i dun need - pull out the credit card ... cha ching! - allows me to buy all that new yuppie gear with dead birds on it - doesnt make me look any younger ... but im sure there are some mountain goats looking for sugar daddies with the latest fashionable outerwear - sex drive? .... pfft .... thats what viagra is for - i feel like i achieved something after spending all that moola shopping - get to show up family, friends about how light and fast you are despite your ginourmous belly - bahhh ... who need to be in shape ... ill just summon the power of red bull when i need to send ... dont get me wrong ... the lighter the gear weight the bettah ... the question is why not work on that big belly first (assuming you have one) ... i find it funny when some fat guy on a trail tells me that my gear weights too much ... i just stare at his belly
  4. i havent seen any fat high level climbers at their peak in the modern era ... maybe there are ... but most seem to be pretty trim, just like any athletes these days back in the day people use to have a few smokes before running in the olympics as well ... doesnt work too well in the modern era i can personally attest that id rather be thin and trim than not ... my big ginourmous belly and muscles are just extra weight ... not that one cant climb with a belly, its just easier and wastes less energy without i used to be and still am in many ways one of those gumbies who think "oh i got muscles and can go 10 rounds in a ring, so climbing is a cinch" ... only to get destroyed my some stick thin kid
  5. better being light than not that said .... it doesnt matter how light you are if you arent in shape or dont have the skill and dont get caught ... shedding 10lbs from my ginourmous belly has much more benefit than shedding the same weight from gear ... for the simple reason that ill be in much better shape, and if i shed it while climbing, be better a better climber
  6. my WC nitro works just fine ... even though its not fully notchless ... and at a lower price its not like all the current wiregates on the market are now obsolete ....
  7. theres no way yr an XL in MB steve ... yr not much bigger than me and im at most a medium ... if its an over jacket it should be a tad big to go over everything ... but not too big
  8. thnks ... im looking for one ... that bit of extra security is worth the extra 2 oz or so i think
  9. never had a problem ... the trick is the push the fig 8 apart first rather than pull it apart and once you get a gap you can use a biner to lever it dont really see the need for anything else ... IMO its more important to have a knot that you and any partner you climb with can easily check with a glance ... if some bum named Tommy uses it to climb Mescalito, its good enough for me, he takes more whipper than i ever will
  10. i believe that ascent hoody had 133g/m PL1 in the body and 100g/m in the arms ... and weight like 750g or so ... call ll bean to confirm
  11. ive sold off or given away most of my dead bird hardshell and softshell jackets in anticipation of the new fabrics actually .... kept one to wear around town my gut feeling is that with the higher air permeability it may replace both hardshells and softshells .... and maybe even windshirts ... i hope OR picks it up ... combined with their torsion flo ventilation ... as to powershield pro ... last thing the world needed was a less breathable version of powershield ... tells ya something about the incestuous relations between gear sties (gear junkie im looking at you), outdoor mags (outside mag) and manuf (polartec, north face) ... when something like that happens ... TNF kishwar, gear of the year winner .... hmmmmmmm
  12. everything everybody said above with 2 notes 1. the serano is very similar to my atom ... the difference is that it uses 60g/m primaloft one ... and doesnt come in the hoody version unfortunately 2. the igniter is really comparable to the micropuff since its 100g/m primaloft one for a fleece replacement a 60g/m jacket is the way to go ... for something a bit more a 100-133 g/m jacket ... one very minor detail that didnt impress me on the EB FA was the use of foam inserts instead of plastic cord locks for the waist adjustment ... but thats a very minor quibble edit ... if you didnt already know patagucci is on sale on both the pata web site and campsaver ... if that helps
  13. well i actually think the fabric makes quite a bit of difference ... along with ventilation of course if you want something that has awesome ventilation ... OR jackets with torsion flo are the best ive seen ... double zips, hem to arm zips, turns into a poncho basically for event ... try westcomb ... made in vancouver canada ... the fit is the same as dead bird i find
  14. hopefully the below helps you ... the DMPC test below is "considered" to be one of the more reflective breathability test ... the short story ... for breathability theres event ... and then there's gore and a few others ... then there's everything else .... if you sweat like a pig in paclite, id get something in pitzips no matter what the material honestly though ... if you can wait i would ... with MH going event (dryq), polartec neoshell being used by westcomb/rab, and gore active shell coming out ... there's likely to be "better" fabric at the end of the year ... or a clearance on older fabrics or you could buy something cheap and on sale ... and plan to tear it to shreds hope that helps http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/articles/rainwear+how+it+works.html
  15. depends on the materials .... my ID microbivy weight 500g ... and equivalent sized bivy out of a different fabric could weight 300g ... etc
  16. short version ... get PL1 if you can ... PLE and PLS maybe be cheaper than PL1, but the consumer doesn't usually see the savings ... ex. the dead bird fission is a $$$$ jacket even with PLS ... even LL bean does a PL1 jacket for $129 http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/60878?page=ascent-primaloft-hooded-jacket i have an atom lt ... and if i had to do it over again ... id get a nanopuff instead
  17. http://kellycordes.wordpress.com/2010/01/28/the-micro-belay-parka/ as a note PL1 if you can unless its on a deep sale ... the clo are 0.92, 0.79. 0.74 for PL1, PL sport, PL eco respectively ... last i checked anyways in other words PL Sp is 86% as insulating as PL1, and PL eco 80% saving polar bears is a laudable goal ... but saving yr freezing ass is more important IMO known PL1 belay parkas and sweater ... DAS, Micro/nano puff, FA igniter/serano, cloudveil enclosure, etc ... some companies (MH, im looking at you) swapped from PL1 to PL eco ... very green ... but not exactly very warm

  19. for a 20F bag its more the bulkiness than the weight thats a disadvantage with synth ... OTH you can not be paranoid about yr bag go 800 fill for down ... for 600 fill you might as well go synth
  20. http://www.eddiebauer.com/EB/12-Days-of-Gifts/index.cat?cm_mmc=facebook-_-fa-_-12days-_-link_day11 make sure you also buy one of the cute doggays ..
  21. cr@p ... guess the quarks it is now ...
  22. sounds like my BD is more durable ... im not the only one with this issue ...
  23. buy the dead bird 350a from mec/rei ... that way when the drop seat and haul loop wear out you wont need to ship it back ... ive swapped out my 350a twice
  24. but it at mec ... if it breaks then take it back ... an elcheapo LED from wallymart would prob work as well ... but then you wont look as cool and yuppie when yr trying to descent burgers and fries in the dark ... lol
  25. youre going to need to pay duty and shipping steve if you buy online ... 17% + shipping + HST as an aside ... the peak parka is available at whittaker for $225 if you can put up with the RMI logo
