  1. DAY 9 (9-29-09) My Overall very Crappy Day Yesterday was an overall Crappy day for me for several reasons with very few good points... Eating: At least in this area I thought I was good (somewhat), I did eat some branflakes for breakfast and had a small cup of Oatmeal (which Emerald City Smoothies are now serving) for lunch... Did not get home until late though and family was begging to stop by McDonalds... Had no idea what I should get that was "Healthy", so I wound up eating just a "McFish" sandwich; (Still felt guilty eating there)... Working out: Nothing!! This really bothered me. Did not walk, did nothing at all. It wasn't that I didn't want to, it was just that my problem (little medical issue I talked about yesterday) has made it very hard for me to walk any great distance over a few feet. I am hoping a "day off" will give it a chance to heal. So I felt very bad and when I laid on the bed at night, I felt like I was gaining weight just laying there LOL ETOH Use: Still have not bought any Brew for my house, but that damn Kalua was still there and when I got home around 9pm I was so upset over my overall crappy day that I had a drink, (damnit!), I was hoping to go a whole day without any... Personal life: Well my worked day sucked A$$! Then I rush home to get my daughter to her Soccer game and they play the best team in their league and get Spanked hard! (it was hard to watch), then my wife is stressed out on top of that because of the Earthquake and Tsunami in Polynesia... "Whole villages wiped away in Samoa" She was actually born there and has a lot of family there still... So overall a bad day.... then this morning my "little problem" still has me nervous and I was scared to eat breakfast (did force down a small piece of beef jerky)... Arrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh Here's to a better day today! To be cont.................
  2. How are the Discovery Channel Everest DVD's?...Worth buying?
  3. Day 8 (9-28-09) Well I was glad to get back on track yesterday. Ate a small breakfast and lunch and forced myself to moderate my dinner. It was raining after dinner and my oldest was busy doing homework so me and the youngin' bundled up for a walk in the rain. I put her in a stroller to make better time since it was raining out and did not want to get baby soaked. I did the same walk that I did last week but shaved 8 mins off our time. Felt great, and my feet already feel recovered after the one day off... My milestone moment for the day was not having any Beer in the house!! (Probably for the 1st time in 8 years). To relate to you how big a deal that is for me let me tell you; in the past I have been on my sick bed with pnumonia and O2 Sat's of 89% and still drank beer LOL, so not having any in the house is Major for me... Could not shake the urge to go "totally dry", so I had a small glass of milk with a shot of my wifes old Kalua that had been in the fridge for a year. It took the edge of my desire to drink anymore last evening...hoping tonight I can go without totally without any ETOH for the evening On a sad note, I may not get to do any excercise today at all! ... I am having a small medical problem that is racking me with pain. I am drinking more water and doing a couple of other things to help overcome the "problem"... Hopefully it goes away very very soon! I am sitting here at work and I can barely concetrate on typing this due to the discomfort... I would share the problem, but it is rather personal... :lmao::lmao: To be Cont...I hope!
  4. My wife had the "G.I. Blues" the other day, and she blames me and my Daughter for it because of the water!
  5. WOW, it looks like they got nothing right! LOL I also wondered why everyone was drinking soooo much before the "big climb"... Seems like they should pound water instead right! There was a National Geo. Clip about K2 in special features... I enjoyed that, but it was just a clip and not the whole show
  6. My vision is really really poor for reading. I bold it because that way I can read it better.... Could be worse right? Like ALL CAPS!
  7. In the past (having military experience) I have watched Military movies and in doing so I have noticed many mistakes, that may not of been noticed by someone that has never been in the Military... With that in mind, I rented this movie last night and watched it: Since you are all the experts here (more then I thats for sure), could you point out what are the parts of the movie that were "Totally Off Base"... Thanks, it will be interesting to read your responses while the movie is fresh in my head
  8. Thanks for the suggestion Now onto yesterday... And on the 7th day................ Day 7 (9-27-09) Not a whole lot to report on yesterday as far as working out or getting ready. Feet still hurt and blisters were still fresh so (like many suggested here) I took a day of rest I did continue to eat as good as I could though. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner... I think the biggest news is I went Sat and Sunday with NO soda's!!! Went the WHOLE weekend and drank nothing but Water, a little Milk, and 4 beers total both Sat and Sun. That is a Huge change for me. Overall I feel GREAT, and I am ready to get back to it today. Oh, we did go to rent movies yesterday and inquired on any mountain climbing movies.... That will be another topic though To be cont....
  9. Doh! Wish I would of read this first... Just got back home from my "Family hike".... and here we go.................... DAY 6 (9-26-09) Well first I will start out with last night... Even though I was going to treat myself to a 6'er (thats six beers to you non-drunkos) LOL; I kept it down to five Got to bed early while watching the latest Naruto box set that I had picked up for my wife and daughter (they love cartoons). Got up around 7am and woke up the kids. While they got ready I made them some eggs and ate a bowl of raisen bran myself. With our little bags full of 4 water bottles and 1st aid kit and a couple of cheapy type caribiners we headed off to the Capitol Forest and the same 2.5mile trail I did the day before. It was nice and sunny and warm and before we started I tried to explain to my 2yo that she should Not play with Horse Poop. I also tied a bit of cloth line (around 3 yards) to a the Caribiner and attached one to my little one's belt loop and one to mine. (this would keep her from getting too far ahead of me I hoped). Both kids did great! My 14yo who is in Fantastic shape rolled her eyes at me when ever I asked if she was ok and not getting tired. The little one of course can not take very big steps and stopped all the time to look at trees, grasshoppers, mud, horse poop, and all the other things that fascinate 2 yr olds. Total trip time to the falls was 1 hr and 40 mins. When we got there we ate some beef jerky and drank lots of water. My teenager also drank from the creek so she will be getting "Giardia" along with me... She also put a little in an empty bottle to bring back to her mommy so she could taste it! (Doh) The baby made it the Whole Way without being carried and I know she was pooped because she had asked me to pick her up a couple of times... Feeling bad because I made her walk the whole way I decided to give my teen my tiny back pack and carry my 2 yr old the entire way back. The trip back only took about 59 minutes and we picked up the pace and my baby sat on my shoulders the whole way! (that made me nice and sweaty by the time we got to the car). On the way back we came upon some bikers and the lead bikers shouted back; "Hikers"! We moved out of the way and let them pass... after they had gone my teenager turned to me and said; "Hey dad, they called us Hikers". I said; "Cause we are now"! :) At home now and have to get washed up to go to a family party we agreed to go to.... My blisters are back and now I have a very painful one on the outside of my big right toe... Hopefully the more I get in shape, the sooner my feet will toughen up! oh...mom drank a sip of creek water when my teenager told her to drink some.... Oh well, we may all wind up on the crapper at the party! .... Hope you all are having a great day as well... To be cont...
  10. reading all of the stuff you guys post back and forth would make a mountaineer out of anyone! Great information by All!
  11. Ordered the book! Also picked up one on Just Mt Rainer
  12. Dang it! I just called Borders and Barnes and Noble, and neither one had Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills... I was gonna get it tonight if possible
  13. Bucky, this is Great advice! Great job!!! 2 years? 18 months? I hope so..., but I would rather make my goals long term instead of trying to rush it. Your list of things to have is great! I don't know what a few of them are (but I can look them up), Like Prusiks/slings...and only 2 qts of water?? (that must be what the pot is for I guess it made me curious as to what Weighed SOOO much that people carry, but I think your list explains that. You wrote I should "Go 4000" ft the day prior... isn't Paradise 5000?? Is that good enough? Never have worn Poly Pro, what is it? I love Cotten long johns, should you not wear them because they become wet with sweat?? I am taking it that a "puff" jacket is like a winter puffy coat right? Thank you again for all your help...May Kim and Jessica both keep us warm in a snow cave someday
  14. Tomorrow will be a Busy day for me, so I am going to post todays "Chronicles" right now BTW, if your wondering why I call them my Chronicles, its because my work-mates call me "Riddick"!!! Sadly, it is not because I am "built" like Vin D., But because I have a pair of "pugs", which look just like the eye protection Riddick wears. (bought them at a truck stop in Idaho if you wanna swing by and pick up a pair) LOL and................. Here we go! DAY 5 (9-25-09) Today after posting I told my friends at work what trail I would be taking and where I was going...(I know I wasn't going on a mountain, but I figured better safe then sorry) LOL Then I jumped in the car and headed to the Capitol Forest. I figured I would walk the trail I planned on taking my kids on tomorrow first to make sure that it was safe for the 2 yr old. Around 9:15 I started out on Mima Trail #8 from the TH. (that means trail head for those who are newer then me LOL). I had a small bag with straps with me (made do for a back pack) and this is what I brought along: Bottle of water (20oz) small 1st aid kit 2 small bags (1.75 oz) of planters peanuts flashlight map pen and my ..... ..... Glock .45cal auto I know, I know.... you are LYAO right now... It wasn't because I was scared of Cougars (which I am), but since I have never been in the woods all by myself, I was more scared of meeting people like this: I have made it 44 yrs without squealing like a pig..didn't want to start now I followed the trail and it took me 58 minutes to get to Mima Falls. It was a lot of fun and I felt like I was the only person in the world at the time... I didn't see another soul while I made my hike. The signs said it was 2.5 miles to the falls, so I don't know if 58 mins is good timing or not. When I got there, there was a little pinic table and the site of an old campfire... the falls were not very big (more like a trickle from a creek) but I was still stoked that I did it! I walked down to the creek and scooped up a handful of water and drank it... (my new tradition) LOL I also noticed a couple of pieces of trash in the campfire site and I picked them up and put them in my 'back pack'. I had a smoke (to reward myself) and drank up my water. (which was now 80% gone). I ate 3/4 of the small bag of peanuts for energy and after about 10 minutes I headed back. The only excitement I had on the trail was dodging Horse Crap... I now am not such a big fan of horses. Just before I got back to the TH, I ran into a nice young lady on a horse and moved out of her way. That is the only person I saw on my little hike... After the hike I drank up the rest of my water and made a note to bring more water tomorrow...One bottle was NOT enough for me. I then decided to drive to the FALL CREEK TH to see where it was and I was soooo pumped up I alredy made up my mind to climb Cap. Peak next week (if I can) as someone suggested here. The "C" line roads were no joke!! Narrow and gravel, my poor car was not used to it, but I pushed on ahead LOL After finding the TH I turned around and headed back home. I was dying of thirst and wished I had brought more water (I stopped by a store and "treated myself" to a Mt Dew.) Only drinking One soda is a Miracle for me. Now home, I am giving myself an award and allowing myself to drink more then 2 beers.... I am now on my 4th And I will prob drink 1 or 2 more with dinner (BBQ Spare ribs, chicken, baked beans, corn on the cob)...But WTH, I deserve it :) I cannot wait for tomorrow morning to take my kids hiking... I will be back on later after grubbing out
  15. it looked cool and silly at the same time, I really got a kick out of it! Thnx for posting that
  16. WOW! What great help all of you are!!! This place is awesome! I wish I was ready now (darnit) LOL I will pick up that "Mountaineering Bible" tomorrow at Barnes and Noble if I can... You guys (and gals) ROCK!!!! :rocken:
  17. GP Dave, Great post! I also have made it my goal..maybe we will see eachother on the summit I had a physical not too long ago (complete with the over 40 probing) My BP was slightly high, as was my cholesterol...hopefully this "change in life style" I am Trying to do will help that. I hope you reach your goals and best wishes for your son. Being stationed at Ft Lewis back in 86 is the Only reason I came to Washington.. I am from Michigan and my wife is from Polynesia.. I wanted to live on the west coast to be equal distance from both familes. My wife said when we moved from Hawaii; "maybe we should live in California". I said; "no, I don't wanna live there. But there is a state called Washington, and they have this really beautiful Mountain there". LOL So Mt Rainier is really one of the main reasons we moved here in 94... It must be an omen
  18. The "Cat jump" at 4:25 made my day!
  19. OK, here is a list of questions I have about climbing Mount Rainier even though I am years away from attempting it: 1. Even though with weather being unpredictable, what is the Best Time of Year (month) to try and make your first climb? 2. How many people here attempted their first Mt Rainier climb without a guide service? 3. What are the "Must Have" things that each climber must have with them? (looking for a list of things...boots, water supply, other equipment, How much food and what kind, etc, etc) 4. Why do people always write that they start the climb from Muir at Midnight or 1am? Why not wait until the sun comes up? 5. What is this registar book I read about...is there a "sign in" book at the top? 6. What exactly is Altitude sickness? 7. What is "push breathing"? 8. Are there mandatory classes you must attend before obtaining a climbing permit? 9. What is your list of Newbie Mistakes that you have seen or heard about? 10. What are the chances Jessica Alba will be free to go with me on my first attempt? Thanks in advance for reading this, look forward to your answers!!! :)
  20. All great ideas!! I do not know anyone else my age (that lives around me) interested in the same thing.. but I will keep my eye out. Love the idea about posting your weaknesses or what you are trying to overcome as well Without further ado..... DAY 4 Well yesterday as you all know I finally ate some breakfast (been a long time), and I actually didn't feel full at work. I am feeling a little better (physically) even though I know it is early... (it might be just mental). Either way I felt good. For lunch I had a can of : It is actually pretty dry to eat plain, but I just used an old can opener at work and scarfed it down rather I liked it or not... The biggest news (to me) is that I drank only 1 soda yesterday! For me that is amazing! (did not get a headache either like I expected). Replaced the urge to drink soda with drinking water... so far so good. Later at home I made up some plain rice and green beans and a few of my wife's favorite: I cut off the bone on the two I ate and also trimmed the fat around the sides... I didn't eat as big of portion as usual, but I think after eating something for breakfast and lunch I didn't feel as hungry.... Once Again, I washed down my dinner with only 2 beers!!! Youngest and myself went for a pretty mellow 1 hour walk again tonight, but no hill involved... (did have to carry her on my shoulders half the time) She is like my little back pack in training LOL Sleeping great (even without all the beer), getting close to 8 hours of sleep and even woke up this morning and had No urge to drink the dew. Ate a bowl of and did not even think to bring a soda to work with me! (maybe today I can go the whole day without one)? Don't officially have to work today, so I plan on leaving here soon and seeking out a trail or two Thats it for now, I have some questions but think I will save that for a seperate post... To Be Cont...
