  1. There are two shrunds that are opening up but had good snow bridges on 7/4. Prouty Glacier showed no signs of crevasses.
  2. We decided to climb South via the Prouty instead. Our trip leader wasn't interested in the Bowling Alley with the mixed snow and ice.
  3. We would have taken them on the 4th. Not sure about it now.

    Mt Hood

Fresh beta on West Crater Rim or Leutholds?
  5. Everywhere. The Green Lakes were still 95% frozen over. The basin seemed like a microwave oven. Lots of sun cups in the open areas. They may be melted out by now but under the trees, there was 5-10 feet of snow.
  6. Anybody have recent beta on this Shasta route?
  7. Yeah, its open. On 7/3 we hit snow after only 1/2 mile on the trail.
  8. Anyone climbing it in the next week? It may be our backup plan for the 4th.
  9. Anyone headed up North in the next week or so? If so, would love fresh beta. We're planning to climb it on the 4th. Thanks.
  10. The snow on the trail is melting fast. Great sunny (a little windy) weather window this morning to summit Middle. Ski down from the saddle was great. Got back to the trail head just as the rain began. Crevasses still covered but showing signs of their whereabouts.
  11. Are the current DAS parkas not as warm as the older ones?
  12. Didn't make it to PDX but talked with the guys at Berg's Ski Shop here in town and they did a great job. Time to get the Baruntses on a mountain for a test drive!
  13. Does anyone have a reliable recommendation for getting a pair of Baruntse liners thermo-molded in Portland? Thanks.
  14. I field tested the Energizer NiMH in the Brooks Range this past summer: they don't hold a charge worth a darn. Unreliable in cold. They were kept as close to body temp as possible at all times.
  15. This cartoon was done in poor taste. It may have some intrinsic value, but due to its timing, comes across poorly. The target audience (the public) won't get it and only makes PMR look bad. Here is a logistical problem with requiring beacons: if they are mandated by the government, then the government should be required to execute the SAR missions with paid staff. Neither the State of Oregon, Clackamas Country, the US Forest Service, etc. have the means to deploy teams of paid rescue professionals. It is highly unlikely they ever will. Mt. Hood and state-wide SAR missions are executed by volunteers. Volunteers don't have the time or energy to respond to false or un-needed callouts. Period. (Google Yuppie 911 if you have any doubts). When the technology evolves so beacons can communicate two ways, the game may change. Do we expect urban 911 calls to be handled by Neighborhood Watch? No. It would be unfair and unreasonable to expect hard working volunteers from PMR (or any other SAR organization) to be responsible for handling calls from a government mandated system. A system that would provide a false sense of security to those who are under-trained and inexperienced. SAR organizations are dedicated to saving lives and helping families. They are not against PLBs, just want them used responsibly. Old Ben summed it up nicely: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
  16. Anybody used this jacket? I need to upgrade the puffy. Currently using the Cloudveil Enclosure (100 g Primaloft). Primary use will be mountaineering and winter camping. Thanks. I've read most of the "Hoody" thread so no need to expand too much. Just wondering if anyone has the Greenland.
  17. When shopping for a pack I take a duffle bag full of my own crap into the store to stuff in the packs. For me, gear carries differently than sand bags.
  18. More info on my foot (how personal): narrow heel, high arch, wide forefoot. Overall medium volume. After trying on 15 pairs of mountaineering boots, found the best fit with Sportiva Nepal Evos (of course it had to be one of the most expensive pairs around). Thanks.
  19. Any suggestions for AT boots that are on the wide side?
  20. Anybody have any good or bad experience with BD skiis? Looking to purchase either the Voodoo or Stigma. I live in Eugene and plan to use them for general backcountry adventures and climbs. Thanks.
  21. This one also has the Bozeman, MT tag. Thanks.
  22. Just purchased an older red DD Astalplane in great shape. When did Dana Design move their manufacturing to Mexico? How can you tell if it was made in Bozeman? Thanks.
