  1. Hello, Just to let you know about a small local repair and create sewing shop. Soaring Spirit Designs got it's start from making whitewater raft gear, and moved into instrument case design. (see website http://soaringspiritdesigns.com ) Now, this small home-based business is moving back to it's roots. Moving into tent design and modification now, but still will do throw-bags, flip-lines, gear nets, bags of all kinds, repair of all outdoor gear. Replace that zipper in your tent, backpack, jacket, etc. rather than throwing it away. If you'd like to learn to repair gear yourself, see the sewing classes under "event listings". thanks! Bring thread, your own scissors, your project, pins, bobbins. 9/25/08 Beginning sewing. the basics. How to use a machine. Bobbin winding, threading. How to adjust tension. Tools of the trade: what do you need? Notions. Good beginner books. If time, discuss buying a machine. Includes hands on using a sewing machine. Look at different sewing machines. class materials: handouts October 10/2/08 Basics #2 Covers reading a pattern, differences in patterns; pattern adjustments (to fit YOU); choosing fabric, pattern layout. This class will work if you are interested in sewing outdoor clothing too. Bring a pattern you are interested in using . If you have bought fabric for it then bring it also along with thread. 10/9/08 Zipper class Back by popular demand. LOSE YOUR FEAR OF ZIPPERS!! This class covers all kinds of zippers. We will review what types of zippers are available, invisible, chain, etc. and learn how to install them. We will in class install different types of zippers in class. Learn how to use zipper chain. Install zipper pulls; secure ends. Bring an invisible zipper, plus a standard zipper around 5 inches long. 10/16/08 SEW AND REPAIR OUTDOOR GEAR Where to get supplies, materials available, fabric, thread, webbing, fasteners, notions. Repair supplies. Learn how to install snaps and grommets. How to make without a pattern: duffle bags, stuff sacks, compression sacks, tent stake bag. Bring (or buy in class) fabric for a stuff sack or tent stake bag. Bring the dimensions of the object you want to make the bag for. Advanced students may try the compression sack or duffle bag. Addition supplies needed. 10/23/08 SEW AND REPAIR OUTDOOR GEAR CONTINUED. Sewing and repairing outdoor clothes. Jackets, rain pants. Materials available, how to update and alter a jacket pattern (ie how to make a pattern for a 20.00 jacket into a pattern for a 300.00 jacket). Bring the pattern of the piece of clothing you wish to make. 10/30/08 Bring your project to work on with help. 11/6/08 OUTDOOR GEAR repair and modify Subject: Tents!! We will discuss how to replace the zipper, how to repair rips, how to make a 3 season tent into a 4 season tent.
