  1. Are you wanting glaciated peaks? Are you only wanting to climb in washington?
  2. Saw tons of people camped on dirt/rocks at about 9200 ft., also saw someone camped on back side of crater rock, just walked up the hogsback to their site... christopher
  3. Every year I watch the ant hill of the south side of mt hood and cringe when i see 3-6 people rope teams not placing pro. Please, if you are going to rope up, place something on the mountain!!! The 1996 deaths of three climbers was caused by a member of a 5 person rope team sliding, pulling the rest of the team down and running into other teams. There really is no reason to rope up unless placing pro! Short-roping is a different story, however, and not to be confused with the horror show of last weekend... christopher
  4. I arrived at hogsback at 3 a.m., heard only one big release from the steel cliffs about 2:30. Temps at hogsback stayed about the same from 3-7 a.m. Climbed far west West Crater, great steps already kicked in, descended chute a little more east, again great steps already kicked in, very little ice/rock coming down. Could not believe the amount of stupidity on the hill. What is up with teams roping up and not placing protection?!? Folks, if you're going to rope up as a team, you'd better be placing something on the mountain otherwise the propensity of you pulling your team down and every other team behind you increases exponentially! Remember 1996... christopher gear: 2 tools (used one), 2 pickets (didn't use), 2 ice screws (didn't use), 30m rope (didn't use)
  5. Would appreciate any beta as planning a climb 5/15... christopher

  8. The tool that many of us use before we step into the backcountry is in dire straits. Washington State Senate Bill 5596 would help keep the program alive... So If you or any of your friends or contacts would be willing to write in support it would be appreciated. The bill would add a $2 surcharge to all snowmobile licenses and non motorized sno park pass purchases to fund NWAC. It would be helpful at this point for all of you to write a quick note to Senator Mary Margaret Haugen , the chair of the Transportation Committee, supporting the bill and recommending that it be moved out of committee. Her e-mail is haugen.marymargaret@leg.wa.gov . You might also write to your legislator if s/he is on the Transportation committee… http://www.leg.wa.gov/Senate/Committees/TRAN/membersstaff.htm and bcc Sentaor Jacobsen, the sponsor of the bill and our champion in Oly. I suggest including the following points: 1. It is absolutely crucial that NWAC continue to operate and be fully funded. Without it, it is impossible for people crossing the mountain passes and recreating in the mountains in winter to obtain accurate information about the avalanche hazard. The absence of NWAC information will result in more avalanche fatalities. 2. Senate Bill 5596 provides a permanent source of funding at an insignificant cost of $2 to those who use the NWAC information the most. 3. The $2 surcharge impacts all recreational user groups. Based on the annual average number of snowmobile licenses and non-mechanized Snow Park permits sold, the snowmobile community and the non-motorized users would both be contributing app. $70,000/year. 4. This bill is fair and provides an easy solution to a long-standing problem. I suggest writing as a concerned winter recreator. Thanks for your help. Please take 10 minutes today and do this! -c

  12. The town of El Chalten is a lot like Aspen and has pretty much everything, including maps, that you will want. christopher
  13. Fantastic pics! We just climbed as well, missing you all by a few days (we summited on the 1st). Christopher
  14. Hey, Keith! We were all rooting for you to come down safely, especially with no previous experience with ice axe, crampons, and without an extra tool or helmut in all of that! christopher
  15. If you are planning on going, make sure to have chains/snowtires. We attempted to climb from cold springs cg but couldn't make it to the cg due to solid sheets of ice on the road. Another van passed us with no problem that had chains on. Christopher
  16. Never mind, a little research and puttin' dos y dos a juntos y lo tengo! Christopher
  17. Does anyone have the exact grid number of the topo map of both Malinche and Orizaba? I have looked online at mexicomaps and another site but cannot tell which quadrant it is. Any help will get you a toast for sure! Christopher
  18. Other options not far from Hood are Mt. Washington, Mt. St. Helens, South Sister, etc..
  19. The polish can have pretty significant ice. I climbed the normal in plastics and was glad to have them on the upper portion of the mountain. Plastics are now a dime a dozen on craigslist and ebay so there should be no problem finding a size that fits you, potentially opening up the possibility of you getting either new boots or negotiating with the owner for the liners only. I, myself, have added thin layers of closed cell foam that I traced my foot onto and cut to add something to my old liners. Mis dos centavos..
  20. Planning a climb, anyone have any inside info on this? I know I can check the guidebook, but if anyone has any experiences I would lovelovelove to hear about them...
