  1. My stepson is heading out with the Oregon guard. He is captain Micah Goettle of Albany, Or. I believe his outfit is out of Salem.I asked him if he could ask his commanding officer to leave one Blackhawk behind because I am planning on doing a climb of Hood the third week of June need some back-up for my sorry ass if I fall down and go slidey. I have been reading this climbing site for a year and a half and would like some help with a term that is used by Ivan a lot.I have tried to figure it out through it's context, but I have to ask. IVAN, WHAT THE BLAZING HELL IS A TAUN-TAUN ?? Be nice.
  2. Also note that in December 2007 someone was killed in an avalanche just a half mile from Paradise. Check Mike's blog-archives from last year.
  3. Who throws up the gun issue every four years, frightening rednecks into thinking that their squirrel guns will be taken away ? republicunts I have to admit, I am in awe of an organization the can get Evangelical Christians, oil companies, and redneck gunlovers in bed together. They truly earned the name Republi-cons.
  4. Let's see...who inherited a huge budget surplus and turned it into a huge deficit in just 6 years? republicunts. Who campiagned for years for a balanced budget ammendment and then when they controlled the senate, house, and presidency never said boo about it? republicunts
  5. whiskey counts as corn.
  6. I saw five different bears in one morning last summer at Holden , all within 100 yards of the buildings. One chased a mule deer fawn right down the road. crazy.
  7. Up Lake Chelan to Holden Village. you can take the trail to Lyman Lake area about 36 mile round trip and I think you can get over to Glacier Pk. but I haven't been that far.
  8. Great pictures. Thank you. I am fascinated by the changes since I was up there 4 weeks ago.I'm comparing pictures taken from the same spots and am blown away.I am trying to decide the best time to return. We had 10 feet of snow at the parking lot and just a bit of dry trail on the rock steps before Pebble.I prefer the snow. Thanks again.
  9. My company has regular training sessions on diversity, etc. We recently spent a loonngg morning on the ills of sexual harrassment in the work place, our training being done by a woman who was, shall we say fervent about the subject. As we filed out of the room for a lunch break, my boss turns to me and says, " I'll bet she's a screamer!".
  10. Spotly, luckily no one was injured in my original post. The incident of the injured gentleman happened about 8 days later.

  12. PHILONIUS, the code took a while to break, but I got the info. Nice yellow lab. My daughter has the same dog, but it had never climbed Hood.
  13. I must have been sleeping. Who the hell is the dude with the dog? Can you supply a linky so I can catch up? Thanks.
  14. Speaking of baseball sized rocks and as a postscript to my original post, as we were coming back across the Cowlitz toward Muir, I was about halfway across when a red rock the size of a baseball whistled past me about waist height and four feet ahead of me.It was late morning and snow was still hard enough for them to bounce and skip down.
  15. -47 wind chill for 5 hours carrying a 65 # pack up and down the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River in western Wi. last winter while training.
  16. Unbelievable. Also worth mentioning is Craig Van Hoy's round trip two decades back of 5 1/2 hours wearing mountain boots and carrying a 30 pound pack.
  17. On Tuesday, July 1, while approaching Cathedral gap from Muir, we noticed a party taking a break right at the bottom of the chute before you get on the scree. They not only picked a bad spot for a rest, but were not wearing helmets. Sure as hell, a huge slide came down, several rocks the size of bushel baskets and they were in a serious game of dodgeball. How they threaded the needle, I will never know. I thought I was going to witness three fatalities for sure. And then they sat down and laughed! This is no bullshit! This was my first time up Rainier. What an education.
  18. My wife had it bad. The target on the leg, the whole bit. Takes time. best to you.
  19. Sorry, meant to post this in Climbers Board. Could the man in charge please move it? Thanks.
  20. I was hiking up from Holden Village to Holden Lake to do some scrambling on Bonanza Peak a few years back when I met a guy about 2/3 of the way up with three months worth of beard, wearing shorts, T-shirt and tennis, no pack, water, etc.I asked him how he was doing--doing good.I offered food and water--nope, doing good. I asked if he was camping and he said yes, they had broke camp and he said, " I think my brother is over there somewhere", pointing across Railroad Creek towards Dumbell Mt.(Sorry, Mom, I lost my little brother in the mountains) He then said, " I guess (GUESS?) we are supposed to meet up at a lake down there somewhere.(Chelan?) I asked him where he was from, and he said Eau Claire, Wisconsin. I said no shit, that's where I live! I asked his name, and HOLY F-ING SHIT, I know the guy and graduated from high school with him! We didn't recognize each other. He asked where the trail led and I said to Holden Village. He asked if there were any rangers there and I said no, just Lutherans.I told him he could get some food there and hopefully his brother would cross Railroad Creek at the old Holden mine, or he was in for a ton of bushwacking. He took off, not a care in the world. Have you met people lost, ill equipped,or just plane f--ed up in the mountains? There must be some hilarious stories.
  21. Lactate, check out Summitpost. It has a forum specifically for Colorado.(Though not as classy as this post)
  22. Ivan, I kicked in once I slowed down--to a stop I meant. To hold. Not while I was moving.
  23. I practiced arrest with just my Koflachs on and also wearing crampons. With the crampons, I kept my knees bent and then kicked in once I slowed down. I hear of poeple spraining and busting ankles trying to kick in with crampons if you're really moving.
