  1. Will the Mt. Adams south spur route still be doable next weekend, Aug 23? My wife and I previously summited 3 years ago, but it was early July. We are thinking of taking another couple this time. They don't have much experience, and I wouldn't want to take them if they couldn't enjoy it. Especially after this weekend's heat wave, I'm not sure what the snow conditions will be like.
  2. Am in the process of looking for new boots. The ideal pair would be good for both mountain hikes, and the 14,000' summits. Is there a pair out there that someone can recommend?
  3. Want to buy a wrist altimeter. I've heard good things about the Suunto Vector. Any other ones that I should look at?
  4. Planning on day hike from Paradise-Muir next Sunday. Can anyone give me a recent report? I'm wondering if crampons are needed for the snow field below Muir? Or, will hiking shoes and trekking poles be alright? Thanks.
  5. Thinking of going up the south side of Mt Stuart, via the Cascadian Couloir route this weekend. Anyone know if any gear is needed (ice axe, crampons, helmet, etc) besides trekking poles. Also, is this best done in one day, or is there a good spot to set up camp before summiting. Thanks for the help.
  6. Was there earlier in the week. Camping begins at top of railroad grade, but you can get higher than that. Move along the right edge of rocks and there have been camp sites dug out higher up. Snow was good until the sun hit, then turned soft pretty quick.
  7. The flexible casing around the fuel line kinked and broke. Just figured I'd buy another since it's about 10 years old. Not sure if you can buy the part I need.
  8. My MSR stove gave out after several good years. Looking to buy replacement. Anybody have recommendations?
  9. Climbing Mt Baker on Sunday/Monday via the Easton route. Anyone have an update on conditions? Anybody else going at same time?
  10. You're right, Winter. It's just that no one will guide up the breach wall. I meant the Western Breach is the toughest of the available routes, certainly not anything difficult.
  11. Two of us are booked on a climb of Kilimanjaro, followed by safari, early 2009. Fly out of Sea-Tac on 1/18, return on 2/4. We are climbing the Western Breach route up the mountain. It is considered the hardest, and has been closed the past couple of years after rockfall killed four climbers. Anyone else...?
  12. I've read duffel bag is recommended for porters on Kilimanjaro. Any type of duffel? And, then I guess that each hiker carries their own daypack?
  13. How's the road look to get into Mt. Adams. I'd like to try the North Ridge, but not sure how far I can drive in. Probably would like to go from Randle. If not, then Southside...
  14. Could I have some opinions on the different guide services that are offered on Denali climbs. I'm trying to decide who to go with for next season. Thanks.
  15. Which is the main route to the top right now? Are more climber opting for the old chute? And, do you need to rope up for the gates? How bout the chute?
  16. Planning on climbing Kilimanjaro next January. Trying to narrow down which guide service to use. Anyone been there...done that?
  17. I climbed last month from the North Fork Sauk. Had to walk in to the trailhead, due to road damage. Lots of windblown trees down on the trail. Also, sketchy crossing of Red Creek. Snow began at White Pass area. Lot of work....but great peak to summit.
  18. Permit required if you camp at Lake Caroline. Or you can go above it out of the permit zone. Talked to the Leavenworth rangers....they said chances would be good to get required permits for Lake Caroline this weekend. Just get to the ranger station on Friday or early Saturday.
  19. Enchantments. Eightmile trailhead to Lake Caroline. Camp there, then summit Mount Cashmere via Windy Pass next day. Back to camp, then out to car. I think it's something like 17 miles round trip. Something I'm thinking of doing also. Let me know if you're going.
