  1. Thanks for an excellent post. Sounds like a good adventure. The fog added some risk to the adventure. It makes committing to the line more difficult.
  2. We started up at 8:30 and started down at 2:00. We skinned up. It's more usual to boot up but these were odd conditions up there. Under the crust you could sink in a bit too much. It's usual to use crampons and boot up or just boot up.
  3. Trip: Mt Hood - Wy'East to Superbowl Date: 5/29/2010 Trip Report: We found a seam in the weather and climbed up to Wy'East via the left side of the ridge above Meadows. Essentially we ascended the White River Glacier for most of the way. Climbing on the skins was good. There was a crust most of the way which crunched and conformed to make a platform for the traverses. There were no avalanches that we could see. Wy'East was also good ascending although it was a bit stiffer, and of course, steeper. Ski crampons were necessary. Kicking steps might have been a better move. The skiing down was breakable crust on Wy'East until it intersected with Superbowl. From there it was smooth sailing on fine corn snow. [img:center]http://[/img] Gear Notes: The usual stuff including ski crampons. Didn't bring ice axe or crampons but next time I would. If there wasn't the breakable crust on Wy'East it would have been ncessary to have both. Approach Notes: We started at the ski area left side and dropped into White River Glacier. Four traverses across the glacier took us to the bottom of Wy'East. More of the same to the top. Wy'East is safest to ascend up the middle. Skier's left can avalanche.
  4. I'd like to do some backcountry skiing tomorrow (June 7th)...Helens, Hood. Superbowl is probably pretty good. I'm slow but I'll get there. Anyone interested? My usual partners are cycling, house arrest, etc..
  5. It's been awfully warm. Bring the rope in case you need it. You might be one of the first to ski it.
  6. Have suncups started to set up? I'm concerned that even if it started to freeze it might be pocked with suncups.
  7. Has anyone been up on Snowdome to see the ski potential lately? Is it suncupped.
  8. Has anyone ever done any backcountry skiing out of Holden Village above Lake Chelan in Washington? I've been there in winter and there are wonderful mountains above the village.
  9. My son and I went up South Sister to the top on June 24th. At about a mile in on the trail the snow was skiable up to about 1/2 mile below the flats. The flats were 100% suncups for the two miles to the real slopes. The real slopes were good (but required a couple of dirty ridge walks) from about 7000 to 9000 feet. It was windy hail and poor visibility from there so we left our skis and walked to the top. Couldn't see well enough to tell you what the skiing might be like up there. However, on our day it was quite frozen above 8500 feet. Skiing was smooth from 9000 to the flats. It's getting late for skiing there, in my opinion, but if you must....we put the skis in the pack and climbed in sneakers all the way. It was 5 hours up and 2.5 hours down, to give you an indication of quality of the run.
  10. Trip: Mt Adams - South Date: 6/20/2007 Trip Report: Drove up on the 19th and camped at 5600 feet. Started up at 5:30 AM. Got to lunch counter at 11:00. Put on the skins and skied to the top. Skiing was corn from the false summit down to about 8700 feet and then sun cup city. Took off the skis at 6500 feet and walked down. Drove out at 5:30 PM. Wonderful outing. Approach Notes: Hiked up about 900 vertical to get to the snow.
