what size chest are you and height? just wanted to know because sizing on these is weird I heard. If you are willing to bump I'll take it.

how about putting in a directional for the belay? one nut going up, one nut going down, and a runner joining the two, tie an over hand or figure eight on a bight, then clip a biner to that loop-voila! that way there is no chance, unless the nuts let go, that you will zipper from the belay. then protect your ass well on the way up. macho doesn't equal smart. remember that the only thing that makes you better than the rock you are climbing is you have a brain- so just make prudent decisions and be anal about pro placement. it is your life on the line.

I really dig that idea-very clever!! did you ever think to contact seattle fabrics or any other fabric shop about water resistant zippers, so you could zip 3/4 of the tarp up with that then leave the head open like a wierd tube tent thing?

well, I decided to go with a bag made out of opossum fur like you all recommended, just kidding. No but I dropped some dolla bills ya'll on a western mountaineering apache. one quick one though, what are the majority of bivy/sleeping bag covers using for zippers, right or left. I'm picky and got a right zip even though I'm right handed- go figure. just wondering.

what i carry currently is a wiggy's 20 degree bag, I don't know if anyone is familiar with his stuff or not, but I find it particularly heavy for what it is 3-4lbs I think. It has kept me warm down into the mid twenties in a 3 season tent, that was without hot water bottles etc... I'm only going to upgrade my bag NOW if I really need to for my summer trip to baker- I'm still in school ya'll. Anyways, If this bag will make it then I'll take it along and not worry. I will have long john bottoms, soft shell top and bottoms, balaclava, and down vest with expedition weight top. I think I should be warm enough.

yes i'll agree. But I'm wondering about using a 15 degree bag specifically for mountaineering on mt. baker during late aug./early sept. I hear this is a sketchy time weather wise and it could be hot or cold. I've never slept on snow or ice for that matter since I live in ohio. Just wondering what exactly i'm up against temp wise. I believe in the safer than sorry philosophy at least until I get my feet wet. any advice is greatly appreciated.

hey I was wondering how versatile a 15 degree down western mountaineering bag would be in the NW? I know everybody says no to down but I've never run into an issue with getting it wet (knock on wood). anyways I can get a closeout deal with the apache for about 300 bones and I didn't know if this was an appropriate 3 season bag for this area.

I would like a climbing helmet, preferrably cheap. I'm looking for any polycarbonate shelled helmet (i.e. edelrid ultralight, petzl ecrin roc, etc...) not the glorified bike helmet junk. I'm willing to pay ~35 dollars. Also long as the bucket ain't broken, dinged heavily, super old, or otherwise in rough shape I'm down. As with most used climbing gear I do realize that a certain risk is involved with buying said gear and I hope that whomever replies understands that in the interest and sanctity of human life/ safety unloading unsafe, or potentially damaged gear on the sly is not cool because I do intend on actually using it. thanks, sklag

The ladies, in particular, really like this look. You better bring a padlock for your tent door. I figured I'd wear my titanium chastity belt, only 6.3564756E7 oz, and skimp on fuel, because with my polypro and shorts I'd be the hottest thing on the mountain! Hmmm, bringing sexy back... One more question though, how would you layer that- just the poly pro or the shorts underneath, gosh this climbing stuff is cornfusin' me!

hello all, just new to mountaineering, actually taking my 1st class this summer through aai. Just wanted to know some things about mt. baker in late august (i.e. weather "typical", temperature extremes, etc...). also wondering as far as insulation layer, could I squeak by with a 750 fill down sweater, or should I opt for a more traditional belay jacket. and if I go that route hood or no hood or is it a matter of personal preference (it seems it should be). anywho I've got my soft shell layers worked out nicely but also wanted to recieve input/ suggestions for a mid layer to the system based on the community's/ individual experiences. BTW I'm 160, lean and can get cold, or not. my metabolism and body seem to be wierd at times. thanks for reading my ramble. sklag
