  1. [interestingly, on Adams a couple years ago, they finally recovered the body of a climber that had gone missing in 1980. So, it may take a while unfortunately.] As I remeber the missing guys brother new Adams had a very dry winter and early hot summer. He did his homework, It was a winter climb and they did find a tent and searched for him in 1980. The brother came here from back east in the summer of 2000 or 2001. Some of the searchers from 1980 came and they looked for the body for some time. I think they were pretty well done after Labor Day. Then some guy on his way down in mid September saw boot in some ice below the lunch counter. They were able to retrive the body, but the weather went cold and wet early that year. They even had bad conditions getting him out. Any way it was quite a story and I am sure I messed up some facts.
  2. GO to asia europe there are so many places as good or better than this country .I have seen them granted there are some poor countries. But it does even out more than we re led to belive. And some third world places are not that bad I have climbed and seen them JMHO
  3. I have been to England National Health care sucks bigtime! I have no clue what the solution is . Other than throwing heathcare bastads in this country in jail. They suck!
  4. My wife and I have damnn good insurance, cause we have good jobs. We are by no means rich but we get much better care , and that sucks. JMHO
  5. Do your home work ,my wife and I both have good insurance . I understand we are in the 15 percent of people who are well covered . And we are blessed . But the only thing good about our heath care is you can shop . Granted the majority can not , and that is very sad . Only the rich and people with good jobs are lucky in or sad system to get good heath care. I have been damn lucky!
  6. Once did a car drop and went up the north ridge and bivived at the false summit. Came down the southwest shutes to cold srings. It is a big mountain with lots of room. Just takes a little work to see what the twenty five hundred other people miss every year. The owner of the trout lake lodge was very helpfull and arranged the car shuttle. The North ridge did not seem as evil as I had heard,It was a heavy snow year and we went in mid June.We found some nice snow fields to go up .No good places up high to bivi, thats why we pushed to the false suumit. Or Pikers peak.
  7. Those pictures WOW that is a special place and you captured it. Nice.
  8. They are only as evil as the morons that use them, some people need to get a life.
  9. If you think all doctors are good your nuts. They are just people, some good some bad. I know from four knee operations. I am lucky to still be climbing, only since I found a good Orthropod. The only thing that saved me was taking contol of the situatuion. Just my experience.
  10. Our health care system is all about profit. My personal thought for what it is worth is this will be the next scandal. Refering to insurance companys and drug manufactures. I feel so lucky that my wife and I both have good inaurance. Big wigs are going to go down on this one and I hope they burn in HELL,or get some good sex in prison. JMHO. Greedy Bastards.
  11. How could they leave out Roy Clark! HE HAW.
  12. If Moore can make people think about our healthcare in this country it is a good thing. Most people put to much trust in doctors. You are in charge of your health and should always do your homework. Hell if I was a doctor I would not trust myself. The good people get overshadowed but they are there.
  13. Try leaving from the end of the road and head to the climbers bivowac. When you make the right on the road to the bivowac headihg east. Pick a good spot and go through the trees .Mark the branches or just get a bearing,If need be. when you clear the trees you can go east to monitor ridge or straight up. You will find less people, better more interesting skiing, but a longer trip. And maybe a snowmobile or two will bother you for the trip up the road. My friends and I have done this many times and find it an all around better way to go than leaving from Marble Mt. snopark.
  14. Hiked up St helens last August, a guy and a dog just had a the same pace as us. Ranger Rick jumped out from behind a boulder and checked our permits. Rick told the guy the dog had to be on a leash and threated him with a fine . He had one and Rick let him move on. So I think these are the current rules. Do not think you will see any Ricks on the hill until it is money making time up there. You should be just fine.

    Sisters ?

Try calling the nearest ranger station, or the Mazamas. But do not trust those recreational reports on the phone. I live in Washington.I called one for road coditions in January and they still had berry picking info on on the recording

Here is some truth for you. 50% of all buildings do nothing to the HVAC till it fails. Most economizers [fresh air vents] are closed all the time, if not maintained. The carpet, paint and any fabric never stop drying till they are gone. This toxic air will stretch your lungs for sure.

I bet you are an office slug, those people who constantly complain about temps and drafts in the high rise offices. If you are, I want to thank you, those are my best jobs, and it has really helped with private school and college funds. Thanks again!

It would be interesting to see if accidents have increased as cell phones and such have come in to our lives. More likely just more people on the hill. Any way have to work, the best thing about working for your self is starting early and finishing late. Does not give one the time to write 5,700 posts for sure. Be safe and have fun.

No hard feelings intended. I have climbed many years, seen death and injury. Have the utmost respect for people that go out to look for lost people. It is just not in my nature to do this. I see people relying on cell phones, beacons and helicopters to bail them out. And the seachers, what more can be said about the risks they take. Buying stuff from REI and going with no experience is plain unresponsible. People should use resourses to learn skills and take care of themselfs. Bad things will happen, they always have. The whole idea of mountaning is streching ones self. I hope the next generation does not turn this into a technical sport. Weather, skills and conditioning will bring you back to your family, whitch is more impotant than any hill. The hardest climb on a good day is as good as it gets, the eaisist climb on a bad day can kill you. Mountanering is a great sport with many rewards, but purity is the way it should be done. Just my 2 cents. And I am sure now one cares.
  22. A nice ending and thank god for all the searchers.
  23. The government has enough rules no more laws! If people do not want to go search then wait till the weather clears. People have to accept risk or stay home. What should be regulated are these guides or who ever leads these first timers on mountains. Like they do in Europe. But still things will go wrong. No more regulation!
  24. We night skied at Mt Hood Meadows last night. The weather was wild but not radical as I have seen before. The bowls on the Mt hood express after six pm were great, made this old guy ski like I have not in along time. Just never have understood people gambling with the weather. Before I went last night I new what to expect but new the snow would be good. Been up Hood more times than I can count. Weather is as important as conditioning and skill, it should constantly be watched by back country travelers. I know weeks before what the snowpack is like,I constantly watch the weather. And going on a trip, long range forcast is a must. JMHO. I have called PDX before when heading out on a quick climb of Hood in the winter at any hour they can tell you temps, wind speed and direction. Lets you know if it is worth it..
