  1. last time I looked into buying one of those EPIRB or PLB, they where $600+... That's a lot of money for me. Maybe that's chicken scratch for you. Just the $300 for my Tracker DTS got me in hot water with my wife... Especially when I told her that it only works with another unit...
  2. The thing I see is at two points. I carry a Tracker DTS beacon. But, that is not the same as those Dane is suggesting. The thing with all avy beacons is that they transmit the entire they are on, regardless if you are alert, concious, or not. That is not true with PLB or EPIRB. Or even the MLU. Those you have to actually activate. And with the MLU, it's useless if SAR is not aware that you are lost, hurt, etc. I don't see how that would help those climbers that are in peril at this moment on hoodie. And, I am all against making it the law that I have to carry it
  3. YES!!! That's the only sure fire way that we can make sure you never ever get into harms way.... What do you think of a GPS device that fits in your car, and call for emergency services for you if you are in a accident? Oh, yeah.... We already have that..

  5. Have you strolled through the comments sections of any of the local news stations web sites? It's almost just as bad, if not worse in some instances (fox channels seem to have a higher number of morons)... Most are crying about the tax dollars being wasted looking for lost or injured hikers/climbers etc. Yet no one mentions how much money we spend on Coast Guard rescues for commercial fishermen... No one screams that they should be charged...

  9. I have had them pull this shit with me at meadows in that past as well. I like to tell them that they do not own the land their resort is on. I also told one patroller to STFU and go ahead an call the sheriff. He relented, said he would look the other way if we changed our course into the trees so his boss could not see us. BTW, you cannot be arrested for skinning up at meadows. The crime is an infraction, which means that you would only have to pay a fine. If they are threatining you with arrest, you should tell them to STFU because you cannot be arrested for an infraction. Those fucking ski patrollers there think they are cops or something, and as usual they are very wrong. But on the other hand, at Timberline, I have never been given shit for skinning up. Shit from Snowcat drivers, well, that's a different story.
  10. I used to do that, and found that the performance was pretty marginal. I now use Mtn. Plates and AT boots, and never looked back at a pair of strap bindings again.
  11. Why? By who? Swedes? Pfft. I still have fond memories of making fun of the drunk Swedes in København as a kid. We even used to throw snow balls with rocks inside at them. One of my friends hit one guy right in the nose, and he was bleeding and puking all over the place at the same time.
  12. Fuck that!! I can out cheap you any day! I sleep in two contractor grade garbage bags. No sleeping bag. I just get into my 90L back pack and stuff all my other crap around me for insulation. BTW, I also found it to be cheaper to use deck screws in my boots. Saved hundreds of $$$ over those silly crampons all the pussies these days use.
  13. Is this the Voile slider track that blew out? Or was it an Ignition binding? That looks like a Voile touring bracket. I have scars like that on my touring brackets too, but never that kind of failure. And sometimes I DO ski the boards on hilly terrain. But then again, you can also just use your poles and push along just like the skiers do...

More for me... have you ever gone to scanfair and entered the pickled herring eating contest? its a real spectacle for the non-swede or any non-scandinavian for that matter.. I went to Scanfair the first year I lived in PDX. I thought it was kind of boring, and well, way too many Swedes. I never saw the sild (pickled herring) eating contest. I like Sild, but I don't think I would ever try to eat more than one jar full at a time. Well, maybe if it was the curry variety. that stuff ROCKS!

  19. I saw a guy at the col on mount hood in some like that. He also had an orange 1970's MSR Ice axe, and a fiberglass HB helmet. I guess they still work for that guy.
  20. Depends on what you intend to do. If you are looking to do more touring, the mohair skins tend to glide a bit better. But they are a little less durable than Nylon skins. Personally I prefer nylon skins, because they are cheaper, and tend to last longer. But with nylon skins you have to make sure that in certain conditions you carry some skin wax or treat the skins with something hydrophobic, or else you might end up with snow sticking to the skins, causing a hellish nightmare. I prefer skins that have a tail hook. This is good because the skins will still be secure even if the glue is not sticking very well. Also, some skins have rather poorly sized loops at the front ends that sometimes do not fit very well on some skis. (Like mine that have stupid rubber covers on the tips) For those, you might have to buy a bigger tip loop and replace the stock one. But from what I saw yesterday at the store, BD is making adjustable tip loops now, so that might solve that. Most skins are designed to be custom cut to your ski profile. You just follow the instructions. This is good because if your skins cover the entire surface of the ski, you have less issues with the ski slipping in icy or hard pack conditions (like in spring)

  22. Also as an interesting note, The Forest Service used to set up fixed ropes in the old chute in the 1920's to 1940's. If you go up later in the year when most of the snow and ice have melted (like in late october etc.) you can still see traces of the old ropes that never where retrieved. But, I would not try using them as they are probably rotten and in bad shape. There also used to be a telephone cable ran up the old chute that went to the lookout cabin at the summit. There also was a cabin built at devils kitchen by the Wy'east climbing club in the 1930's. But because of avalanches and such, the cabin only lasted a few years. Today there is no trace of it.

  24. Well, there is a reason the "old chute" route is called as such. The Hogsback snow ridge used to be shifted sharply to the west and much smaller in size during the 1920's to the 1950's. During that time climbers went up the same route that people do today. In the 1960's the Hogsback moved east again, and what we know as "the chute" and "pearly gates" came back as the main climbing route on the south side. As of the last few years, the ridge has been moving east again, and there is no telling when it will drift back again towards the "chute". But we'll see what happens this year, but I am not counting on it going back any time soon, if it's history provides some sort of pattern.
