  1. If it hasn't been said before, or enough, I think those guys there are great. Always helpful. They love what they do and love to talk about it. I'll spend my money there first before anywhere else. Nice job folks!
  2. How was crossing the Reid? What was the temperature up high? Great TR! Good job!
  3. I enjoy the CAMO series. There's Camo Malt Liquor (8.0%), Camo High Gravity Lager (8.6%) and my personal favorite Camo Ice (9.0%). I generally purchase the 24oz. can from the small and very friendly neighborhood grocer up the street from my office. I enjoy a can at my desk while I'm finishing up my day. You know, to help take some of the edge off. You can find out about these and more at: www.40ozmaltliquor.com Great topic!
  4. "tennis shoes" I've been part of SAR teams where the people we were searching for had equipped themselves in this fashion. I don't recommend it. Not that there weren't underlying circumstances affecting this rescue, but traveling this way on a 14,000 peak...even Mt. Shasta in June is foolish.
  5. Nike has a climbing gym and its very nice and almost always empty. Can anyone go there or do you have to work there? Or can you just say, "It's ok, I KNOW Phil [wink-wink]"
  6. That Humphasher thing sounds out of control...beer and running, the perfect combination! PDX Adventure Racer has Tuesday night (7pm) trail runs in Forest Park that are fun. Headlamps and a good 6 - 8 mile jaunt on the Wildwood or wherever...fun and a great workout. www.pdxadventureracer.com
  7. Or when you fall into a crevasse you could just walk out the bottom like Joe did.
  8. All great points fellas, I appreciate the insight.
  9. So, I'm tempted to buy some of these ice screws. They're anywhere from $11.50 - 13.50 and seem to be up to the task. I have heard something about their performance on hard, brittle ice. Anyone else have any thoughts on these? Seems crazy not to get a few to add to the rack. Afterall, they're lighter and stronger than the standard screws on the market...at less than half the price. What's the catch??
  10. Good thread. "Man plans, God laughs." I love that. So, if memory serves the deal at The Schwab is that you buy them now and if you haven't used them come March 30 (or something like that) then you can get a full refund. I bought a pair thinking this was a great deal. Well, it's been 6 years, I haven't used them and I still own them. Chains are like flares and jumper cables. You're glad you have them when you need them.
  11. Thanks everyone. These are good tips. Big_Sky_Ry: that's some setup. I'm looking into that as a great option. I'll report back when I put it through the paces.
  12. I'm curious as to what you guys use when it's really cold (<20*F) and your hydration tube freezes? I have tried many things: tube/mouthpiece insulation, blowing the liquid back into the pack after I drink (though this becomes very tiresome sucking out the air for the next drink), and drinking more often hoping the tube won't freeze. I have long used a water bottle and resorting to the OR Water Bottle Parka. But I really want to keep using my hydration pack. Is there some alternative or do I go back to the Parka when it gets really cold? Thanks!
  13. Cluck: thanks for the photo...chilling. I sent it to my wife (probably a dumb move). Her response, "you're done with this hobby!" Cluck/Iain: Any additional info as to how they were climbing? Any pro in place? My impression is that they were using some but that it pulled out?? Where on the headwall did they fall from? Anything to help us all take something away from this tragedy...
  14. Nice reporting Barkernews...thanks for the frequent updates.
