  1. if the OP is still even reading this meditation...

a calorie does not necessarily equal a calorie, as eloquently laid out by one Dr. Robert Lustig, below. the reason for that is how different macromolecules are metabolized, their byproducts, and pathways they employ. if you consume 2000 calories of fiber-loaded plants (*unprocessed), they are going to be treated by your body very differently from 2000 calories' worth of twinkies.

to distill and answer the original post - avoid, or at least, limit fructose.

skip to ~45:00 if you just want the biochemistry.

1:11:30 addresses exercise. this guy isn't an exercise scientist, but i think it's worth a listen.

Still here. I made it to about 1:09 last night and will finish tonight. Interesting, thanks.

  2. Alright, this sounds like spam or malware, but I want to know the "1 weird trick" to burn belly fat (or any fat).

Supposedly Mark Twight discusses a method for burning fat without burning through your glycogen or blood sugar in the course of a workout in his Extreme Alpinism book, but I had to take it back to the library before I found out what it was.

I want to use my workouts to reduce fat and my body weight, but I don't think I can bring the kind of intensity needed to train to fully deplete my glycogen stores and start burning fat reserves. Any suggestions? (And please forgive my crude analogies and undoubtedly incorrect assumptions about metabolism and fitness ... feel free to correct as necessary)

  3. Here it is. the mother of all storm shelters. I bought her on this site about 7 years ago. All of the seams are taped, with the exception of where the hood meets the body of the jacket. I've taken it up Rainier, Hood, Adams, South Sister - all without a hitch. The fabric is less water repellent than I would like. It might just need a DWR wash and a trip to the Arc'Teryx factory. But I'd like to pass it on as I'm thinking about investing in a softshell.

I don't think it would be fair to ask for money for this jacket and I've thought about just giving it away. But before I'd do that, I'd just throw it in my car and leave it there. So, what you got to trade? I'm interested in relics, old Himalayan expedition memorabilia, posters or banners for the bare-ass walls in my apartment ... a gri gri ... size 13 rock shoes that are more aggressive than my mythos but less aggressive than my anasazis ... let me know if you want more pictures!
