  1. I have a pair of Silvretta 500. Carbon Rails, 2 position heel risers, excellent condition. They are mounted on Hagan Tour extreme titanium 192 cm 92/69/80 very good condition $80. G3 skins 80 mm cut to shape excellent condition $70. I used this set up with my plastic mountaineering boots as well. Have pix I can send you if interested.

  2. I've used voip (Primus) for about a year now with zero problems. Cancelled my land line after a month when it was obvious it wasn't needed as a backup. Free calls in

    N. America and about 1/3 - 1/2 price international means the wife can yak all she wants.

  3. What can we newcomers do to truly emulate the footsteps of the pioneers when we were born after the age of the most fantastic dicoverys?

First world society has become too soft. Everything is so much spoonfed, homogenzied, prepackaged crap nowadays. Liability issues have tarnished the luster of adventure.

I read an interesting quote from one the early British Everest expeditions: "We were prepared to risk our lives. We were not prepared however to simply throw it away."

How different it is today. Messner was fortunate to be able to live in that first age of exploration. To expand the boundaries of first imagination, then of accomplishment.

But who is to say that Annabelle Bond has less right to stand on the summit than Sir Edmund?

Are sat phones and GPS just a logical progression in safety like crampons are over hob nailed boots?

Those of us who are true to ourselves and really, really miss the rocks and ice if we're away from them even for a short time will be the ones who will keep the life in alpinism after the masses think it's too blase' to care about.

  4. UNITED NATIONS ( AP) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez took President Bush to task in front of a global summit for waging war in Iraq without U.N. consent and won rousing applause for his critique.

The leftist leader told a U.N. summit on Thursday that fighting the war without U.N. authorization showed Washington did not respect the world body. He recommended moving U.N. headquarters to a country that has more regard for the organization.

``There were never weapons of mass destruction but Iraq was bombed, and over U.N. objections, (it was) occupied and continues being occupied,'' Chavez said. Bush alleged that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction but none have been found, shattering one of his main arguments for going to war.

``That's why we propose to this assembly that the United Nations leave this country, which is not respectful of the very resolutions of this assembly,'' Chavez said.

World leaders at the summit had been asked to speak for five minutes but Chavez ran long and when the presiding diplomat passed him a note saying his time was up, he threw it on the floor. He said if Bush could speak for 20 minutes, so could he. When he finally stopped, he got what observers said was the loudest applause of the summit.

I think the "axis of evil" club is about to get a new member. It'll be interesting to see how the spin doctors will make Venezuela a terrorist threat now.

  5. The spineless Canadian justice system and the zealous American drug storm troopers should take care of their own back yards. If the Canadian officials permit the brown shirts to extradite him, they should be arrested for sedition. They were well aware of his activities and chose not to pursue things further. How can they yield to pressure from a foreign government to bring charges now?

This will set a dangerous precedent.

If selling seeds make him a drug dealer then I guess we are heroin addicts when buying poppie seed muffins.

  6. The Clash.

None of those boy bands that you guys mentioned would have the talent to write these lines from Know your rights...

You have the right not to be killed. Murder is a crime unless it was done by a policeman or an aristocrat.

You have the right to free speech. As long as you're not dumb enough to actually try it.

Is it time for a new American revolution? How far will the

"have nots" permit themselves to be pushed? What will be the boiling point that ignites the spark that says enough

    is enough?

How will it surface and who will lead the charge? How will it spread and develop the necessary strength to overcome the current government structure?

Will 1000 mothers that have lost sons in an avoidable war be the spark? 2000? 10,000? How many will it take?

Will the ever expanding, self appointed role as the worlds policeman simply become too much? Will meddling in the affairs of other sovereign nations under the auspices of freedom take a step too far? Will it be the reintroduction of the draft or when "Axis of Evil" countries are invaded?

Will the racism and prejudice that simmers just below the surface finally explode, divide the nation and set it aflame? Is hurricane Katrina the latest progression from Watts and Montgomery? Are reservations like where the red man is enchained their next step?

Will it be the crushing foreign debt that triggers an economic collaspe? Do broke, beaten down people have anything else to lose?

Can the current education, social security and health care systems provide for the people? Will they finally crack and dump the populace knee deep in the mire?

Will taxation without representation become the catalyst once more?

Will the rape of the environment make living conditions unbearable? Will another natural disaster strike and produce a cataclysm that breaks the fragile underpinnings of society?

Will the rise of the another superpower starting to squeeze the hand of uncle sam so hard make him forget about domestic prolems and concentrate on his shrinking global influence?

Can there be a chain reaction of the above factors that when taken alone don't have the necessary vigor, but collectively do, to compel a movement that starts the change?

    Spray on.

  8. Does anyone have one of those new Big Agnes or Exped insulated sleeping pads? Any comments on them? How about a Prolite 4? What are your current sleeping pad setups? I use an yellow evazote and/or a z rest most of the time and it kind of sucks.
