  1. Joshua Johnston (SAR) is live on Fox now. He discovered one of the caves. He handled the questions well and would not talk about specifics of the cave. Good job.
  2. A news conference is planned for 9:00am PT today.
  3. Oregonian now reports: Monday, December 18, 2006 Report: Family says body found was missing climber Kelly James See Photo The Associated Press is reporting that a body found in a snow cave on Mount Hood by searchers looking for three missing climbers is the same climber who placed a distress call to relatives a little more than a week ago, a person close to the family said Monday. Jessica Nunez, who is close to the family of missing climber Kelly James and has been acting as a spokeswoman, said the body is that of Kelly James, 48. She said the information comes from James’ family, and that she had talked to them.
  4. Fox reporter Adam Housely at Mt. Hood reporting. Chinook will fly this am to retrieve body. Families have requested that the name not be released until they have a chance to positively ID deceased.
  5. Well said. I for one appreciate the comments of those who have more experience and wisdom so that I may keep this in mind next time I go above tree line with my crew. I also hope that this thread stays open and the mods just clean it up/ and or warn the folks who are off topic. Take a deep breath, resist the temptation to flame, put your best foot forward here. I know you can do it.
  6. Sgt. Tiffany of Sherrifs Dept was just on Fox and he said that they have a pretty good idea of what happened with the 2 caves and equipment and that they plan on explaining such tomorrow.
  7. Fox has on Mathew Weaver right now who is a former PMR member and he is giving a climber's and SAR point of view. I'm glad they put him on.
  8. The body is still on the mountain and they are not going to ID the body just yet. I imagine they will remove the deceased climber tomorrow in a Stokes litter by helo and bring him down for positive ID. They expect SAR climbers to head up tomorrow starting at 6am with air ops starting a little later. Tomorrow may be the last best day as the weatherman says another storm is coming.
  9. Fox news is doing a wrap right now with Gretta and the guy who's on the ground at Hood River airport. He's actually very good and has been involved in SAR matters before. All searchers are off the mountain and all aircraft are on the ground. Meetings are going on now to gather all the info from the day and to plan tomorrows efforts.
  10. It's hard to know what the video is that we are watching. Some is a replay of 20 mins ago so it is confusing. But the best I can tell is that SAR is now descending to the 'known cave'.
  11. Everyone take a deep breath pls. Stay on the search. We are helping those who do not have a live feed such as Europe.
  12. KOIN and KPTV are the local Fox feeds
  13. Sorry, I meant Fox the TV channel was feeding live video. My TV screen says it is coming in from affiliates. My screen said something like KOIN
  14. The guy who went down the ridge is now digging.
  15. Chinook is lowering person/supplies to SAR teams. Winds seem very calm today. Helo is pretty stable about 50' off the deck.
  16. Some guy is downclimbing on the ridge of one of the gullys. He is making good time.
  17. Fox is feeding the live helo shots of the summit ridge where the SAR folks are digging and probing with tools at several different locations.
  18. Ruedi makes a good point about ham radios. I am a ham and 2meter handhelds are just like a walkie talkie but much more powerful and useful. I don't want to stray far off topic here, but find yourself a local ham radio operator and discuss the subject with him. It varies location to location.
  19. A 'wishbone' could possibly mean that Kelly heard the aircraft and crawled out to make the sign in the snow and then crawled back into his snowcave. It is too harsh an environment for him to stay outside his cave for more than a minute or two.
  20. The Oregonian also reported last night that 'a piece of climbing equipment' was spotted just below the summit at dusk, but has not followed up on that report. I think SAR is being cautious about their reports especially after we got that report yesterday the a UH-60 spotted 2 climbers near Tie In rock.
  21. I'm no fan of Fox but it's all I get here on the east coast and the reporter is standing on the tarmac at Hood River. Hopefully he can get something straight.
  22. Regarding the 'wishbone' shape.... A Fox newsreporter who is at the Mt. Hood airport where the news conference is held spoke to a person in the Sherrif's department off camera after the conference and report such on Fox.
  23. A shape was seen in the snow last night, a 'wishbone' shape. Searches are headed for the shape now. This is the encouraging item that was spotted.
