  1. that's what is so wrong with the political discourse today. too much cynicism - too much hatred for the "other" side just because of partisan affiliation and perceived "bogeymen". no, i just have yet to see GW display any integrity or tolerance towards others. this has nothing to do with party affiliation (i have none)...this has everything to do with bush unless ideals start talking instead of big money, i agree
  2. Translation: if you don't agree with me, come to the same conclusions as I, and share my world view - you can not think. exactly...now you're getting it!! seriously, this goes both ways. there is mass propaganda from the left and right. i need to retract part of my statement above. i do have friends that are guilty of believing some hard left propaganda at face value.
  3. cracked, that's a blanket statement referring to the general decline of american's capacity to think for themselves, and to critically deconstruct propaganda that's thrown at them on a constant basis. i feel lucky that my friends and i (and most people that i randomly meet in the pnw) can read between the lines better than average, but when i go back to wichita, ks i nearly lose hope for this country.
  4. who thinks GW comes close to personifying this ideal? this is bullshit lip service. i like what he said, but it makes me sick hearing it from his mouth.
  5. not really. we are only capable of regurgitating the last bit of propaganda that we saw on TV. we can no longer think for ourselves. this is a good thing though because that means we are not responsible for ourselves nor for our actions. we're quite a schizophrenic self serving bunch. principles de jour
  6. no way dood, we're gonna get massive snow soon! seriously, i feel like the spring corn season just ended...not that it ever began. i figured that with a sprained ankle, big snow would come dumping in. sorry y'all, i tried to work murphy's law for you.
  7. the recent issue of powder has an article about st. helens backcountry. article was kinda lame, but one line said 'FS officials anticipate opening the area to climbing next spring'. not sure if there's any authority behind that statement but it's enough to keep my hopes up.
  8. for those fearsome fire-breathing bears
  9. on sale at backcountry.com $165 down from $328 (free shipping) probably the last chance to get this discontinued item.
  10. why did you buy whole coffee bean if you don't have a ginder?
  11. Last summer I said to myself "Rick, it's been way too long since you've seen your grandparents!" and decided that as soon as I could scrounge up enough money I would fly down for a visit. They're pushin' on in the years, both over 90. This fall I found a better housing situation that has freed up enough funds, but the holidays were coming up and that took its toll on my checkbook. Late winter or spring...that's when I'll do it. I was really looking forward to sitting down with them and getting as much first hand information about my maternal family tree as possible. (my aunt has exhaustively researched my dad's side) I talked to my grandfather on x-mas day while I was visiting my immediate family in Wichita, but my grandmother was asleep at the time. "She went to bed when she heard you were on the phone. haha. We'll call back tomorrow so she can talk to everyone" said grandad. Sunday I drove up to Lawrence for the day to see my good friend and her new baby, since I won't be back in KS for another couple of years. Flew back to P-town tuesday night. I got a call from my mom wednesday night telling me that my grandma had passed away that morning. I wish I could have had one more visit with her. I can do without the family tree information, I just would have liked to sit around a card table playing hearts, drinking bourbon, and laughing with her. She was so full of piss and vinegar, and loved to give me shit...always with a laugh. It sucks that I missed her over x-mas. It hurts that I waited too late to visit. sorry to be a downer on this board, I just hope to prevent someone from fucking up a last chance, like I did. btw, I'm visiting grandpa in 3 weeks.
  12. Gaper_Jeffy's link explains it... with the cold temps, the snowpack will not stabilize much by or during the weekend. be careful out there.
