  1. I haven't been up this route in a long time and pretty much forgot what to expect. I remember up the face and to the rim, but from there to the summit... beta anyone? been up there recently? also thinking of descent, how's the snow? sketch factor (ice, not slope)? thanks!
  2. i'd contact the mazama lodge. someone may have turned it in thinking they were helping out. Phone 1-503-272-9214 email: lodge at mazamas dot org
  3. hey, my americorps team built that trail! that was Augspurger Mtn.? sorry it's so overgrown ivan, we finished it 9 years ago and haven't done any cleanup since.
  4. hey christopher, sorry you didn't get to make the climb. seems like you hit the only week in the last 3 months that climbing conditions were not ideal. oh well, such is the pnw. sounds like you made the most of it anyway post again when you come back out!
  5. backcountry.com has some deals on some of the pants listed above
  6. garmin has been hacked and you CAN make your own maps. this link looks like a great source. i know there is also a way to take your own drg's (georeferenced topo images) from any gis software, run them through a 3rd party conversion, and load them into garmin. i just recently got my gps, and i haven't had much time to test any of this out. i'd like to know too! -r
  7. corvyclimb, you should be house sitting your friends place! the hostel is gone...or at least it moved. (i'm referring to the one near town on century drive) that was a super cheap place to crash, and the tweaker who ran it was always entertaining.
  8. Dave Riley's customer appreciation... summary: -bad snow year, not our fault...no refund for you! -thanks for your money, and in appreciation when we raise our prices next year we won't charge you the difference. -oh, and you get a coupon -whine whine...we spent a lot of $$ on a lift with poor load area planning ...whine whine -I look forward to seeing your money on the slopes again soon. did you expect anything else from dave? Edit: i'm not saying pass holders deserve anything. it is a gamble and i lost. but when timberline is still open right next door with better snow (i know it still sucks), they should really offer something better to entice people back to meadows next year. bad move, dave.
  9. right idea, but a little off. Abies, genus, true fir Picea, genus, spruce Tsuga, genus, hemlock Pseudotsuga menziesii = fake hemlock, some guys last name not a fir, not a spruce, and close to a hemlock
  10. didn't they learn anything at los alamos? fire + wind = bad maybe they thought they'd have better luck since there weren't any trees around
  11. there are other crevasses on the south side that people have fallen into. if you're too far to the east above the palmer snowfield, there may be a few near the edge of white river canyon. i believe the crevasses in this particular area are highly depended on the current snow pack and you should have no problem this year.
  12. They are doing this in Seattle too. send me your info if interested. sorry mike, i beat you to it!
  13. Hey all, my friend is a 'Clif bar girl' and just contacted me about an interesting promo. Clif bar has a new product that they're trying to get out and they want to get samples "into as many office break rooms and lounges as possible". If you are willing to put these samples in your break room, you will get a stash of your own to keep. If you are interested, email me (rickmomsen yahoo) with the information below. I will compile the responses for Karin on monday and either she or the Clif rep (Derin) will call you early next week. they can deliver the supplies (Clif bars and a 'free sample' bin) to your place of work. Info I need from you: -your name -your daytime phone number -company name -number of people in office notes: -as far as I know, this is only for the Portland metro area. if you Seattle area folks are interested, I can ask if they're trying to plug that area too. -the only thing i'm getting for this is the stash for supplying my office -I do not know how big the personal stash will be moderators; feel free to move this thread...didn't know where else to put it.
  14. i don't know if this fits your request ireneo, 'cuz this movie kicked ass!! AC/DC
  15. A blonde woman was speeding down the road in her little red sports car and was pulled over by a woman police officer, who was also a blonde. The cop asked to see the blonde's driver's license. She dug through her purse and was getting progressively more agitated. "What does it look like?" she finally asked. The policewoman replied, "It's square and it has your picture on it." The driver finally found a square mirror, looked at it and handed it to the policewoman. "Here it is," she said. The blonde officer looked at the mirror, then handed it back saying, "Okay, you can go. I didn't realize you were a cop.
  16. This plant is highly invasive in CA and of 'particular concern' in OR. Please keep this away from natural areas, as we have enough invasives to deal with. cool plant though!
  17. sapphire and tonic bloody's or salty dogs for the morning after
  18. if you hike it in mid-august to mid-sept you can feast on natures candy...blueberries and huckleberries
  19. thanks for the tips all! cj001f's link is what i was looking for...the strap wrapping around the heel was what i was missing. it turns out, i don't need it b/c the lifter doesn't seem to slide forward on the sole of the boot. i may need to add this option as i haven't put it to a real test. i couldn't use a premade wire bail b/c my binding is already ~1" off the ski and i would lose too much height. (btw, this is for a clicker approach ski w/ stiff sector boots) the lame pic show's my final design with the red dashes being the heel strap. i cut the length of the pvc so the lift/angle would be just over 20 degrees. coincidently the angle of the cut is about the same. drilled two holes and set the hooks of a 10" bungee and clamped the hooks to prevent them from falling out. total cost: pvc (2"), $0 (leftover scrap) bungee, $1 a little time
  20. excellent! i'm heading up on sunday and was worried. from town yesterday, the snow had a funny reddish tint to it. like there was a nice coating of volcanic pumice on it.
  21. wasn't '98 the year of the record breaking snowpack? how does this jive with warm temps and el nino? this annoys me. a global average temp report does not mean shit to the average joe. "it's 1.5 degrees warmer than 50 years ago??? BFD!" it's the regional climate changes (like pnw is 7 degrees warmer and north plains are 6 degrees colder) that joe is going to appreciate more. if you're going to report stats, do it in a way that people will truly understand. didn't el nino used to run on a ~7 year cycle? i remember hearing that somewhere, but i've only been here for 10 years; not long enough to 'feel' the cycle can you say asphalt? subdivisions? exponential population growth? "weak" el nino???? this is the worst snowpack for the region in over 25 years...how is this weak? sorry for the rant. this article crushed my remaining thread of hope for decent snow. thanks camilo!
  22. hey, i found that on vinyl in the house i moved into! love the cover, but haven't listed to it...no turntable
