  1. on 3/8: zero snow up to morrison creek cg. mostly clear up to cold springs cg - but had to punch through some deeper heavily rutted sections (<1.5 feet) the last 1/2km. arrived in suby impreza very early. 4 wheel drive trucks had similar issues later in afternoon.
  2. 111, thank you for your enlightening commentary. we'd all live better lives if you would provide more of your insightful 2nd hand advice. * seoul is not korea! anyone who spends time in seoul and claims to experience another culture is fooling themselves. i like going to seoul for two reasons only (food and microbrew) and i'm sick of it by the end of the weekend, so i can understand how your friends didn't enjoy their time. * there are over a million english teachers in korea so there is bound to be a share of disgruntled foreigners * my post had nothing to do with living in a big city much less teaching english * life experience (no matter where you are) is what you make of it. * the land of morning calm is (i think) more accurately described as the land of contradictions. since confucianism is deeply embedded into this culture, you really have to know the situation and not the person to get an idea of how people will behave. there are times i'm at my wits end and i want to give someone a good shaking, but way more often i'll be overwhelmed by their generosity. once while bailing on a climbing trip i walked a 1/2 mile in the rain and came across a group of elders under a canopy. i approached them to call a taxi for me, but instead they fired up the grill, cooked up a meal, and kept my cup full of soju for 2 hours. some of the nicest people i've ever met, even if we could only communicate through charades. anyway, you are far more likely to experience this kind of sincerity out in the countryside. toko, you'd be amazed at how much has changed in the last 20 years! seoul is still congested and polluted (and currently full of exciting riots!!). the infrastructure has really improved so you can get anywhere in the country in a few hours. yeah, the humidity is starting to get bad and soon the rains will come...i'm just holding out for the fall. oh yeah...position is filled

  6. try Tom Dwyer in Sellwood. they may not be the cheapest, but i trust them 100% to tell me exactly what is wrong, what i have to fix, and what i can let slide. they took the time to answer all my gumby auto questions without treating me like an idiot.
  7. hey all, a friend of mine in seoul posted this and i thought some of you folks could help out with some of her questions. any ideas for her? much appreciated... -rick
  8. aahhh...you're familiar with our fine brews. don't forget the OB! when you go that low, they all taste the same. say luke, with all the stories about yak bouldering, i may have to head up there sometime! with 75% "mountaineous" countryside, there is a lot of rock to be had. i wasn't really into rock until i came here last summer so i'm not all that good. i spent most of fall with an experienced friend (who's still recovering from an injury) documenting new sites in english, learning, getting frustrated, and getting hooked. there is also ice, but not as much and too far away from me. although, you're sure to find me here during the sticky hot summer days (check out the video). pics of climbing in jejudo (the 'hawaii' of korea) Deodunsan pics
  9. S. Korea more insta-coffee and shitty beer than you can imagine. there are over 100 variations of kim chee though!!
  10. National and familial pride. I'm surprised he hasn't committed suicide out of shame.
  11. my current mission is to convince Kim Jong-Il to sing "i'm so ronery" live at the superbowl halftime show. wish me luck! seriously, engineer contract with the AF. the funny thing is that i was never really interested in rock until i left portland and came here. without the year round snow i had to find something to keep me entertained.
  12. i got it too... and i thought i was special!
  13. this is one possible place to get info though it's not so much a mountaineering forum. the ideal time to climb seems to be in spring before the volcano officially opens (just avoid the fuzz). in season consists of long lines! but nov/dec conditions will be as unpredictable and nasty as any tall peak in the cascades at the same time. do not take a winter fuji ascent lightly!!! if you find a japan mountaineering / backcountry riding forum please pm me! -r
  14. thanks matt, technique is something i don't have a lot of right now. i'll keep at it, try new techniques, but scale it back a bit. cheers! -r
  15. thanks for the reply Matt it is sore when i press on the underside of my ring fingers (where the ring would sit). several other fingers are sore 1 bone towards the finger tips. all of the first joints (next to tips) are sore when i hyperextend them, some when i contract them, and some are sensitive to pressure. i thought this might be overuse since a couple of weeks ago my finger 'workout' consisted of typing. -r
  16. don't forget "chicken of the woods"! image the younger the better!! i've seen them growing all over dead and dying conifers in the Hoh!
  17. i'm relatively new to rock and gym climbing and have a question about finger pain. two weeks ago i started going to the gym for ~1hr 3X/week. my fingers really didn't hurt until i got back on the wall after a 4 day break. it does not feel like the pain is coming from the muscle, but feels more like a bruise. my fingers are very flexible and when i'm pulling on a hold the palm of my fingertips are flat and the first joint is at a 30/35 degree angle. is this a common pain for newbies that will subside with practice/time or is it more likely from hyperextending my fingers? do i need to train my fingers to hold the weight on the tips? thanks for any advice. -rick
  18. anyone notice how freakishly big her head is? damn! it's as big as her torso!!!
  19. dood...it's b/c you had washington plates!
  20. if you're going to do the w. crater route, i'd suggest skirting to the left (west) of crater rock on your ascent b/c once you're on the hogsback, taking the 'old crater' route seems sooooooo far out of the way you're not likely to do it. plus, on the WCR route you're less likely to encounter a crowd and can go at your own pace. whichever route, have fun!!
  21. waterproof boots with tread (mine are worn out and still work this time of year), axe, glissade device (trash bag, rain pants), hat...warm clothes for high winds, food/water...that's all. i 2nd bug's suggestion; without ski's/board you'll mostly be walking below lunch counter have fun!
  22. you shouldn't have to finalize the disc to stop the drive from 'spinning'...nero is capable of leaving a disc appendable. although, OW suggestion would be a good one if you don't want to add any more data.
