The road along the north edge of Anderson/Seton lake, between Shalath and D'arcy looked a lot like that in '95.

Very cool video work. They must have been flying remote cams on cables for some of the shots.
  3. I had a couple of these. They work fine, but I found that they dug into my hip quite painfully after a couple hours.
  4. radio this morning said it was the third. Something about a naked man found in Tilli's tank one morning in 1999.
  5. This is exactly the sort of thing that could happen to any one of us. Let's not get too critical...
  6. Even worse, people that live in Canmore roped climb in gyms...
  7. Yea, I have "discussed" this issue with several gyms over the last few years. BUS method is what the acmg teaches in the climbing instructor program. The reasoning is that there are many people climbing in the gym with little or no experience other than top rope belaying in a gym, combined with the degree of distraction and crowded conditions. BUS allows for more time locked off per cycle, and less room for error. For example, I was bumped rather solidly by two teens horsing around the other day while belaying. While this isn't going to phase anyone who has any degree of adventure climbing, I can see some young gym rat losing his grip on the rope in the same situation. For a number of reasons I stick to the SSS, but have taken to demonstrating the BUS when I have to pass a test in a new gym. I seldom am bothered about using SSS after my test, and usually win the arguement when I am. (I quote what I overheard in one of these instructor instruction courses, ie. better to let advanced climbers stick with what they have already learned.)
  8. Cascade is styrofoam right now, I hear. Regardless, all of the above suggestions are good. Stay at the Alpine Club of Canada clubhouse; it is like a very posh hostel, and you will have no trouble hooking up with climbing partners based out of there.

    Why climb?

" It is not the goal of grand alpinisme to face peril, but it is one of the tests one must undergo to deserve the joy of rising for an instant above the state of crawling grubs. On this proud and beautiful mountain we have lived hours of fraternal, warm and exalting nobility. Here for a few days we have ceased to be slaves and have really been men. It is hard to return to servitude." Lionel Terray
  10. this There is way too much variation from one person to the next to form any useful consensus on this topic.
  11. To make it more news-worthy, grab them headlines. D'uh!
  12. What a relief. I totally thought it was the booze!

    from an email...

What about that bit with the whip and the moneychangers? I think that is the jesus that most of your christian peers identify with: ie violence is a perfectly reasonable response to your own "righteous" indignation.
  14. That is pretty interesting. Indeed, my friend, though he claims he is not religiously motivated in any form, has said that Indian muslims are not "real" Indians. I was under the impression that there is a large taliban and al-qaida presence in Pakistan, and this in turn must affect India. Is the taliban not interested in India?
  15. A relatively new friend from Calcutta said something interesting to me the other day, I wanted to share it with this board. We were taking about Muslims in India, and he said that many of his peers feel that muslims take advantage of the Indian's peaceful nature, using violence to try to enforce their own religion. The nature of this resentment runs so deep, he says, that the sentiment around the University he was attending in fall of 2001 was morbidly gleeful. As in, as my friend said, "those muslims are going to get their asses kicked now!" Speaking for his friends and family back in India, they are quite satisfied with the results of the war on terror thus far. I had a similar conversation with an Afghani ex-pat restaurant owner in Vancouver a couple years ago, who had nothing but happiness and gratitude in his heart for the western forces in his country of birth.
  16. Well, take this with a grain of salt, as it is an anecdote from my drink-addled memory. I recall that about 15 years ago or so, there was some of this talk around Canmore concerning their local search and rescue. Turned out that only a small percentage of the rescues were for what you would call "climbers", with the preponderance of the resources being used to aid injured mountain bikers. In fact, there were more rescues enacted with the assistance of climbers than actually for climbers.

Maybe the place is so damned beautiful that it is worth rebuilding every few years? Does insurance cover this sort of damage? Is this why that bank went bankrupt today?
  18. No, it has more to do with winter temperatures, windspeed, length of growing season, etc. You often see quite different elevations for treeline on opposing sides of a valley, due to the amount of sun each receives.
  19. All this sounds like is a rock climber trying to sound tough. Alpine is above treeline. (<---that's a period)
  20. Cavers or arborists would be better suited to answer these questions, I suppose. Having done work in situations similar to what you propose, I will only advise that you most definitely should back up your grigri with a prussik, if not 2. I caught the lever on a fold of clothing while working... I never saw a problem with the way the grigri handles 10mm static rope.
  21. I imagine they left everything warm they had with him in a safe spot, and roped up for the descent down the glacier. Is the glacier dangerous right now?
  22. Tragedy happens, true. Are you saying that justice should not?
