  1. Like I said in my post “We climbed up and over the notch where it became very windy. We traversed under the north face of Chair to a lower summit (5,919ft).” The peak is NNE of Chair proper on the ridge. The aspect we skied was SE. Once we were lower and off the peak the line we skied then turns east then turns north down to the lake. I apologize to Monika. Guess I was typing too fast and did not notice.
  2. Trip: Chair Peak North Ridge - Date: 1/28/2010 Trip Report: Monika and I went to try and ski a line off the north ridge of Chair Peak. We started from Alpental and headed up toward Source Lake. We made it up to Chair Peak Basin in about an hour. We climbed up and over the notch where it became very windy. We traversed under the north face of Chair to a lower summit (5,919ft). We were hoping to ski the NE face down to Chair Lake but we found travel too exposed to attempt with the gear we had. We changed our plan and skied the SE face down to Snow Lake. It ended up being a 1,900 ft line. Snow was very wind affected most of the way down. The last 500ft was great powder. We skinned across Snow Lake then up and over the divide and back down to Source Lake then back to Alpental. The distance was about 6 miles with 3,300ft of elevation gain. Good tour but not what we were hoping to accomplish today. 3. I agree it is a scare tactic. Closing the most popular hiking trail (mt si) and capital forest (most popular ORV area on the west side) is a joke. Between these two groups there are a lot of voters.
  4. As I was touring by today a got a few shots of your party and the other one. Looked a little windy up there at times.
  5. I skied there last May. There is a good run next the the Visitor Center down to the lake. You can also tour around the rim and that is what I would do if I were to go this time of year. I have not been there in the winter and I know the visitor centers are closed. I would call the park and ask what road it plowed closest to the rim and go from there. If you have not checked this link yet it might help link
  6. Trip: Chair Peak Circumnavigation - Date: 12/25/2009 Trip Report: Weather was looking good so my friend Steve and I decided to do the Chair Peak Circumnavigation. We had both done it a few times but being a low snow year so far we decided it would be best to stick to something we know. We arrived at Alpental mid morning under fog but we were able to get above it at about 4,500ft. Once we reached the notch between Bryan and Chair we changed over and skied down to Melakwa Lake. I managed to release a small slab of wind deposited snow (9” crown 20ft wide) downhill from a little roller. We changed back to skins and made our way up the valley to Melakwa Pass. The ski down to Chair Lake was wonderful powder that never gets effected by the sun. Most of the other slopes on this tour do get some sun so it was either little crusty or wet powder. Once we skied down to Snow Lake we were in the fog again. The wind also picked up so we had to fight an extremely cold head wind across the lake. We gained the Snow Lake Divide we skied the tracked out slopes back to Alpental in the fog. It took us about 6 hours to do this tour and we never had to take our skis off. There is a good skin track in so if you are looking for tour this weekend hit it up. Gear Notes: ski crampons and skin wax useful
  7. Trip: Snoqualmie Mt. - Slot Couloir Date: 11/21/2009 Trip Report: Aaron Riggs, Steve Greenlaw and I toured up Snoqualmie Mt. from the Alpental parking lot taking the Phantom up. We were able to keep our skis on left of the waterfall. We were happy no booting was required through that section. The touring from there was somewhat strenuous due to the variety of the snow. We encountered deep powder, breakable crust, heavy wet snow, lots of groppel , and ice on SE facing slopes. We only used hasty pits as we toured to evaluate conditions and ran into some 8” slab layers on some SW slopes near ridges. Once at the top I rappelled in and tested the slope with lots of ski cutting. Once it was determined it was safe enough to ski Steve rappelled in and Aaron skied. We regrouped at the dogleg before I skied down. There were lots of sluffs but that was expected. The cliffs skiers right is a little on the narrow side but skiable. The bottom section was very fun with some wind affected powder. On the way out we opted not to go up the notch SW of the Slot b/c would have sucked to boot up it. We decided to go a little west and tour up to the ridge. On the way out the skiing was OK until the phantom where it had warmed up and got very heavy. Overall it was a very satisfying day in the mountains for November. Here is a link with same TR + pictures Aaron posted if interested. Link
  8. Kent has one next to their Skate Park. It is up on the east hill.
  9. I made the same mistake on the 21st. Still a fun ride.
  10. PM me with make and size so I can get them back to you.
  11. Using Index as the standard (in WA) X38 is generally 2 grades off with some exceptions. (no disrespect to the original developers) The problem I have found is you need to grade any new routes consistent with the other routes in the same area to stay consistent. BTW Ellies and girls rule were the same developer.
  12. I think they have to carry way too much stuff. Here is just one of my many encounters with them. I went to climb the Tooth in early season a year or two ago year and there were a few groups on the route being instructed when we got there. They had every pitch on TR. They were cool and let us climb by. On the way down we came across one of the groups rappelling down as well. They told us they were with the mounties and there were 4 in their group. The first guy raps down to a ledge, ties into a tree, and gets off rappel. The second guy rappels further down and right of the first guy, ties into a tree and gets off rappel. The leader and the last guy rap down to the second guy, tie in and pull the rope leaving the first guy stranded ½ way up the climb without a rope tied to a tree. The first guy did not say a anything to the leader and the leader proceeded to set up the rope for the final rappel unaware that one person in their party was not there. I finally I yell down to the leader and point to the poor guy stranded. At this point the leader had no idea how to resolve this problem. We set up our rope and swung it over to the guy so he could get down to his party. I know this type of stuff does not typical happen with them but I thought it was humorous since nobody got hurt. BTW that pic was taken at Vantage. I just thought it was funny example.
  13. FYI the access road is washed out so it is now an 18 mile approach at least until late summer.
  14. I went up with the person who put up the route. We found that the rap station just needed to be tightened up. The 4th bolt was not as loose as we thought it was going to be. It just needed the center to be tapped with a punch. The reason these unusual bolts were used is b/c the hangers have been stolen off this route a few times. I plan to climb the route later in the week after people have been up it a few times just to check to see if the bolt stays tight. If I find a problem it will be replaced.
  15. Bolt and rap station fixed today. Any more problems in the area just send me a PM. Thanks, Dave
  16. It should be fine. Might be a little thin at the top few feet.
  17. North side of Adams may be hard. I have had to wait as late as the first week in July to be able to drive close. It was still a long walk in.
  18. I had a great time skiing with all of you, some for the first time but hopefully not the last. Dave
  19. That crossbow you had are a foam core and fairly thin top sheet. That said I used the same holes on a pair and never had a problem. But the shop did warn me this is not a good ski to do it on. I had dynafit not tele binding. That does suck the shop would not fix address your concerns from the start. I feel if someone mis-drills they owe you new skis. Now getting to having someone else on my bindings is totally wrong. I doubt you will get that binding back. The person who picked up the skis had to know the wrong bindings were on there. Who doesn't look at their stuff when they pick it up? I check the din, boot fit and mount position before I walk out the door.
  20. I don't think they are .7 and .8 either unless I did not see some holds.
  21. I found a pair of gloves on the slope above Snow Lake on 2/3/09. Found a hat on Red Mt. 2/2/09. Resond here or PM me. Dave
  22. Alpental was good yesterday. Some parts were still a little icy. Went for a quick tour up Snoqualmie Mt.as well. Skiing was good but had be careful on any wind loaded slopes. Winter seem to be returning for now.
  23. Also the patch on skiiers right off of chair 1 @ Alpental that you can TR. Don't know if it is in. There is also some stuff along the climbers trail @ Mt Washington @ e-38.
