  1. I need to find an education program to get out of work for a year. Ideally it would be a one year Certificate in Outdoor Pursuits although a two year Diploma might work as well. Any info on any schools that offer something related would be appreciated. It needs to be a Canadian school.
  2. I just bought some skiis with bindings already mounted for really small boots. I need to move the heel plate back about an inch to fit right for my boot. I'm wondering if I should just move the heel back 1" or if I need to move the toe mount 1/2" forward and the heel 1/2" back to keep the ski balanced.
  3. What a horrible thing but I can't say it doesn't surprise me. I've had numerous encounters with both Griz and Black Bears. The 4 Griz I've seen all ran like hell with the exception of one. He was unintentionally trapped on a trail between our group and another so he stood on his hind legs and checked us out for about 5 min. before deciding to take off down a ravine. Hey what can I say I'm 150 Ib's of sheer muscle. The black bears on the other hand have been far more numerous and aggressive. I had one with her cubs treed on the edge of a cutblock as I was treeplanting towards her. She was in the bushes making noises and about to charge me when I finally noticed her. Another came into camp 6 times before we had to shoot it. Another ripped apart 4 tents and would show no sign of fear towards 20 angry planters banging pots spraying mace and throwing fire crackers with a couple of barking Husky's, so it was shot. Another was shot inside of the planters tent after chasing the cook out of the mess tent. Bears are like humans in a sense and while this probably sounds very inhumane everyone of these aggressive bears were nearing hibernation time and super skinny. They were desperate and very aggressive as they were unlikely to survive the winter if they didn't get a full belly of grub soon. We were also planting a burn area so the food supply was dismal. I guess just like humans you have different conditions and circumstances that create aggressiveness. Boy am I going to get dumped on by the enviro's for this post.
  4. I copied and pasted the following from the "live the vision site". Apparently we're on the verge of losing vehicle access across the river. No-one seems to know who to write to as of yet but thought I'd start passing the word until we have an address. Howie: This spring Jamie McVicar, Joe Buzowski and myself met with Roger from Alberta Sustainable Resources and drove through the Ghost and he showed us what was proposed. He said that there was still going to be vehicle access to the Banff Boundry and to the river crossing around STD. We would not be allowed to cross the river any more. Also, random camping was being eliminated, you would only be able to camp at the bottom of the big hill and at the old CMC camp at Wully Wall. We explained to Roger that the Ghost was a world class ice climbing destination and not being able to drive accross the river was going to be a big deal in the winter. He basically had no idea that people even use the ghost in the winter or at least that was the impression he gave me. We basically asked for some kind of winter access to the ice climbs, at least as far as This House of Sky, and some more random camping spots. We showed him around and he seemed pretty okay with everything. When we got back from this little meeting, we emailed the people from the ACC and even had a conference call with them, they seemed to have no idea about the scope of the proposed closure for the Ghost, especially the ice access. Jamie knows a bit more about this, but I guess the ACC was one of the groups given "standing" at some of the user group meeting in the planning stage. I now hear that basically they are going ahead with the orginal plan, no special winter access and just the camping spots I mentioned. This is what I know so far, if your hearing more, please post it. Jamie may know more and post it, but this is a huge blow especially for ice climbing. Crossing creeks in 20 below weather just ain't fun, and makes climb's in the valley of the dogs a pretty big day. Contact the ACC, call your MLA or if you have any other great ideas, jump on it. I don't know if it will make any difference, but it sure can't hurt at this stage. Look forward to hearing what other people might know or heard. Thanks Howie
  5. How are the splitboards now adays, I know back when they first emerged they were like something straight out of the womb. Can't walk with them and definately can't ride them. I know you'll cringe to hear this if you're a core boarder but I used to ski when I was age 9-14 then switched to boarding. I tried a swap a few years ago and I was ten times better than I ever was on skiis. I enjoyed it more and am definately more natural at it. So I want to get back into it but am sick of lifts, groomed runs and getting yelled at for being out of bounds so AT seems like the logical way to go.
  6. Sorry, I guess I should have mentioned that it was $330 in funny money. It sounds like it would still be worth it to invest the extra dough though if they are only $175 CAD more.
  7. I found the old debates right after I posted this, thanks for the info.
  8. I'm able to pick up a pair of Bandit X's at $330 regular $800. Would you suggest buying them or going for a labled "AT" ski. Also what size ski would you recommend. I'm 5'8" 150Ib's and a black diamond skiier. I switched to a single plank about 12 years ago and now I'm clueless when it comes to ski gear.
  9. I've been a resort skiier for a number of years but got bored and have spent all of my time recently hanging off of ice in the winter. I decided that I can't live without skiing though so I've started looking for some AT gear. I'm looking for any advice that would help out a Newbie in buying gear, especially comments on Dynafit binding setups. Are they better besides the weight? Which setup releases best, etc....
  10. For all of you that can't help but keep your ski poles out for all 4 seasons, you may want to check out this link. These poles have an added benefit to carrying all that deadweight up the hill. http://www.coldpole.com/home.htm
  11. I think that's what I'm most concerned about too. If the axle stays centered it allows a slight gap on each side. But the axle doesn't stay centered, it slides back and forth leaving one side pinched and the other with the lobes significantly further out on the axle. I'd love to see freaks response to his friend who says, hey isn't this pin supposed to be centered in the biner? hahahaha lmao.... if you're unhappy with the biner put it on my rack hahaha....
  12. hahahah lmao... well not exactly but I'm glad I ammuse you. I'm not saying that they're life threatening etc. I thought they might be and that's why I contacted the store and BD. Funny thing is MEC didn't laugh like a drunken nut f#@%er like you, instead they pulled every cam off there shelves and contacted BD the same as every other store I went into. I'm still wondering if I wait for a while if these sloppy cams will dissapear and the shorter axles will replace them on the shelves. It just appears to be really crappy quality with everything sliding around and I don't see how it will help keep the grit from locking the lobes when the axle can still slide to one side and pinch all the moving parts on the other side. Oh and freak before you laugh yourself off that narrow ledge of sanity that you're standing on you should know that BD just fired two of there assembly line staff for assembling biners incorrectly. I don't know if they caught it before it hit shelves but it caused significantly lower closed strength ratings. Sometimes it happens no matter how great a QC program you have in place.
  13. Sure they all do it to some extent but has anyone seen these new cams. I bought a #2,3 and 4 and the 2 and 4 have an 1/16" -1/8" of play at most. The #3 had 1/4". When I called the store, they got so freaked out that they pulled the whole lot. I went into another store and they did the same thing. No one calmly said that that's normal. As soon as the employees saw it they said holy $*#@ that isn't right and contacted BD. There is not only tons of play but when we measured the axle length on the #4's there were different lengths by more than 1cm on the new cams. This is either really poor workmanship or they had a problem with the machine setup on a few batches and because it wasn't as safety issue decided to save costs and sell them anyways or they are using the old axles with the new lobes and because of the size difference of the new lobes there is excessive play or they really do feel they need 1/4" of slop in the system to work the grit out. Whatever the answer it is nowhere near the amount of play found in metolious, dmm, aliens etc. and I really don't like it. I'll try and find a digital camera and take a picture so I can post it to show you what I mean.
  14. I bought a few of the new style cams a while ago. When I got home I was dissapointed to find that the axle on the #3 allowed about 1/4" gap between the cam lobes and the axle end. The axle shifts back and forth through the center and you can end up with two lobes on the left 1/4" further from the center post then the right side and vice versa. I thought it was a defect so I took it back to get exchanged but was surprised to see that all the #3's had the same gap and some of the #4's also. The store contacted BD and they explained that it wasn't a safety issue. After a bunch of contact back and forth, they finally said that they had redesigned the axle length to allow for grime and grit that gets into the moving parts. The tighter cams were still using the old axle length and all the new ones had a longer length. Is this really the truth???? If it is it seems a bit bogus as the springs already allow space for grit to escape and 1/4" of grit seems a bit far fetched. I've been searching stores to find a cam that has a tighter grouping but have been out of luck so far. I don't like the idea of climbing on a cam where the lobes can slide back and forth that amount. Anyone have some more info on this???
  15. Just wondering what I should bring for protecting the rock band. Are there decent pins the whole way or should a guy bring a set of nuts and a few medium cams. I don't plan on doing it for 3 weeks so don't worry about warning me about the avi danger.
  16. Who said anything about mass governmental intrusion into your personal life? Don't understand what you're getting at other than if a cop sees you with a pipe in your mouth he might take it away.
  17. Actually Dru, the tests are conducted on willing patients who receive marijuana for medicinal purposes.
  18. You know you're right, I am a Canuck from B.C. and it is freakin' surprising to everyone whenever I speak up against legalizing mary jane. I think the exact reason I'm against it is because I am a Canuck from B.C. I've seen so many of my friends with so much potential turn chronic and ruin their future. Sure there are tons of studies are out there that say pot is harmless. There are also studies out there that prove that the active ingrediant in B.C. cultivated weed has 100 times the potency of the gov. manufactured weed used in the tests. When I see my buddies lighting up 6 times a day with no future interests or interests at all I think it's all a load of shit. You can't tell me that a guy who lights up 10 times a day isn't addicted. Sure come back with the alcohol argument... funny thing is I know over 10 personal friends that I'd classify as addicted to weed and its ruined their life, yet I only know 1 that I'd classify as an alcoholic.
  19. Ivan, all that education and you still don't understand how things work. I have a BA in Criminology and the Criminal Justice system with a minor in Law. We too studied said laws but we also studied how these laws became stale. It was not because individual police officers chose not to enforce them. Rather they became stale because the courts refused to hand out punishments for them creating statutes, the enforcement agencies agreed as a whole to stop enforcing them and the general public as well as the politicians were also in agreement. In fact some laws like spitting on the sidewalk have regained popularity and the police are being pressured to start reinforcing them in certain areas like Vancouver. The politicians or public send a concern to the Chief and he in turn sends the word to his pawns that a certain offence is to be punished. The pawns better do as he says if they ever want a promotion or don't want to end up behind a desk or lose their job. In the same way, if the courts and public send a message that a law needs to be forgotten then the chief will tell his pawns to relax said law. Once again you are refering to petty laws that don't matter. On the other hand you are suggesting to stop enforcing a law concerning drug enforcement causing millions of dollars in property damage, deaths and a huge underground criminal network with the most notorious criminal groups in both of our countries. If you think that a cop can just tell his Chief that he thinks its a stupid law and that he didn't bother processing the dealer that he caught last week, and still keep his job, you're even more naive then you first appeared. Not everyone out there can act like politicians and do whatever the hell they want as long as they sorry when they get caught.
  20. My dear Ivan, I am quite an educated man and that is why I made an educated response. You on the other hand chose to construe some quote made by a respectable person in a completely different context to try and back up some insane rant that they would oppose. You are a fool and I would love to know what your pathetic supposedly well educated ass does as a petty officer. After all, you felt compelled to tell the world about someone else ignoring the rules of their occupation to try and forward your cause, why not tell the world who you are and what you do?
  21. Had a few friends just get back from a trip to Africa. They told me about this crazy army in Uganda made up of abducted children that are going around and killing everyone. I've never heard anything about this before and thought it could probably use some publicity. Here's a toned down description of what its all about. http://www.fas.org/irp/world/para/lra.htm
  22. Does your employer know about this picking and choosing what laws to enforce or how to interpert them? Are you a Securitas or Wackenhut employee told to watch for people spitting on the sidewalk? Whatever you do it must be damn petty. Sure a person can choose not to enforce or interpert different laws but if a Cop decides to let a grow-op go undetected because he feels that the law is stupid well I'm pretty sure he'll be let go. Or if a Cop is told to go investigate a liquor store for selling to minors and he decides not to cause it is stupid, I'm pretty sure he'd be let go also. As a cop, you have no authority to change the laws laid out in front of you rather you have the choice to enforce the law or find a different occupation with few exceptions. Sure there may be some instances like seatbelts or doing 15km/h over the limit that can get passed over but once again those are some pretty damn petty things. As for Nazi's just doing their job... they were. If they chose not to they'd probably be killed. It was a horrible disgraceful period and to sit back now and act so self righteous is easy. Not to sound like I'm defending their actions I'm just trying to show you that things aren't as simple as they seem. Hell even the new Pope was part of Hitler's youth.
  23. I've had a lot of people recommend buying a soft shell to wear almost all the time. Then to layer with a down jacket if it is snowing and cold or a light precip jacket if its pouring. Any comments or experience with this setup?
  24. Chelle, sorry I didn't mean to offend you. I have nothing against the fat gene I just think that its sad that the highest most untouchable locations on the earth are slowly becoming common place to everyone through technology. Isn't it saying something when you know that the only way that you can stand where you are standing is by working your ass off through physical perserverence. It's almost like the last of the uncharted territory for explorers. Up until now only climbers or people who at least worked at it and put themselves at the mercy of the terrain could say they stood on top of Everest. You have to have cringed at least once when you heard about someone getting dragged up everest with no climbing experience. This is just taking it to that next level. Sure it will help with rescues but part of the whole idea of Alpine climbing is really being out there... not in the middle of swarm of choppers with gapers clicking pictures. There was something to be said about being able to go only where your will can take you and not your wallet. As for it being posted in the climbing section, I learned about it and quoted the article from a "climbing" magazine article. I guess I touched a raw nerve... not sure why your so against the post.
  25. Imagine climbing to the top of everest only to be greated by some rich tubby who wasn't even dragged up the hill by sherpas but rented a chopper to lift his fat ass up there?
