  1. Has anyone had any experience with this tent? I'm looking for a shelter that is more weather resistant than the BD epic fabric tents, and the eVent tents are no longer available. The weight (5.5 pounds) seems a bit heavy, but the dual doors with mesh on the inside seems to offer versatility. Thoughts? grazie
  2. Has anyone been up the road lately? Can you get all the way to the trailhead?

Does anyone know if this closure applies to the Bend crags?
  4. As of three weeks ago you could drive up to the start of the trail.

i posted this in another thread, but it's not a weekday issue. According to Wick, the road will have to be upgraded between mile markers 4 and 9, which happens to be where a lot of the cragging is located. During the road upgrade one lane will be closed at all times (including weekends) so delays should be expected. The digging of the tunnel and rock excavation (via trucks) will take an estimated 3 years (3 years was his estimate, but he said it assumed no major complications). The trucks will operate 7 days per week.
  6. the sax player for living daylights will take you for a ride!
  7. If anyone is going to be at SG between 5 and 7:30 tonight and would like to swap belays, send me a PM.
  8. I lost the stuff sack within' a couple days (sorry environment). I would like it to stuff inside it's own pockets (yeah i know, that's kina a gay feature) just so I can clip it to my harness when going sans pack on a mutipitch. Here's what it looks like w/o a stuff sack: That's an interesting way to rack your jacket! I would think that material would get thrashed quickly that way?? I would prefer that it would stuff into its own pocket as well because I just end up keeping the stuff sack in the breast pocket anyway.
  9. I have the micro puff pullover (12.5 oz) and so far I have been very pleased (I assume the jacket is the same thing except it has a hood). It offers incredible warmth for the weight and it packs down small in its own stuff sack which you can clip to your harness if necessary. I agree that the outer material is delicate, but I don't climb many squeeze chimneys with it on, and given Patagonia's return policy I wouldn't be too concerned.
  10. yes. the uw profs are submitting a proposal to the nsf, who is also receiving proposals from other teams of profs. if icicle creek is selected, uw would act as the "landlord" overseeing the property (how scary is that?!).
  11. Be careful attracting all this attention to that area; you just might get what you ask for. Up until now D'town has remained low key and good relations are established with the forest service. Before attracting all this attention why not wait until we see exactly how bad the damage is. If we can clean it up over a weekend or so, then it's probably best we do it ourselves. I personally know a few people who would be willing to help out, and they don't even post on this board (wisely, I might add).
  12. this bill died in congress today. they will probably propose a new version, though.
  13. I went to a presentation given by the lead scientist (Wick Haxton) a month ago and got his perspective of the impact this project will have. If what he says is correct, the biggest impact will be during the construction phase. The road will have to be upgraded between mile markers 4 and 9, which happens to be where a lot of the cragging is located. During the road upgrade one lane will be closed at all time so delays should be expected. The digging of the tunnel and rock excavation (via trucks) will take an estimated 3 years. The trucks will operate 7 days per week. I asked the guy if he was shown that a majority of residents (either by vote or scientific sampling) opposed the construction would the project sponsers back off. His response was that he would be surprised to find that a majority opposed the construction (how scientific!). So basically he dodged the question, which to me says they are going forward with this with or without community support. If you are going to write letters, write them to the National Science Foundation because they are the ones who will choose where the DUSEL project is located. After the project is completed it remains to be seen what the federal government will do with the space. Personally I think this project personifies the ego driven nature much of (NOT ALL) science has taken on.
  14. Looking for a partner for Sunday. I may be able to do Saturday as well, but either way I can only do day trips. Leavenworth, WA Pass, D'Town...I'm open to suggestions. Send me a PM if you are interested.
  15. I suggest Ramuta's. If you tell him you need them by a specific date I'm sure he will get them to you (unless he is totally swamped). From what I remember it took no more than two weeks. He did a great job and didn't even charge me for fixing the seams that were falling apart.
  16. I assume you have checked out Joe Puryear's web site ? The page has some beta on Goose Egg mountain which appears to have some multi-pitch routes. Using Smoot's guide will get you there just fine (you'll only curse the book a few times, rather than the normal extended bitch sessions that have taken place when using it for other crags). The grades feel similar to Index at the easy/moderate grades, but I can't speak to the hard routes. The cave off of the trail on the way to the Royal Columns will be a good place to escape the heat during the hottest part of the day; though be aware that you won't be the only species with that idea!

Yes, I saw those. I always find it helpful to find information from sources outside the source I am reading. God forbid anyone goes looking for answers that aren't spoon fed to them...

If anyone takes the time to read this, be sure to check out his background to see from which perspective he is writing. There is some good information here: http://globetrotter.berkeley.edu/conversations/Podhoretz/podhoretz-con0.html The biggest problem I have with Norman's piece is that he begins with the assumption that: "His objective is not merely to murder as many of us as possible and to conquer our land. Like the Nazis and Communists before him, he is dedicated to the destruction of everything good for which America stands." I disagree that his objective is to destroy all that is good in the United States. He has said himself his objective is to remove the United States' military arm from the Middle East. Destroying "all that is good" is just the means to satisfying that end. By erroneously making this assumption the United States has only added fuel to the fire, rather than trying to understand how it started to begin with. And Szyjakowski, he claims that WW3 was the Cold War.
  19. A pair of 5.10 rock shoes were found at the base of Gun Show slab at x38 last evening (5/19). PM me with the details and I'll get them to you ASAP.
  20. Yes, it is interesting. It illustrates how easy it is to deceive Americans generation after generation.
