  1. I do that with the monthly's, but I know all three gyms are constantly tossing "donated" material into the recycling bin. Anyways, someone picked all of it up in one clean sweep. Cheers!

  10. +1 for Linaeus observations. There was a voluntary recall in Fall 2015 for the 2011-2012 Radical 1.0 heel towers. Do a google search for "Dynafit radical recall" and you'll find a ton of information, including the Wild Snow post mentioned earlier. Give Mike Yost a call at Pro Ski and Mountain Services in North Bend and he'll probably know the latest. UPDATE: I see you have a lot more to say about this over on TAY.
  11. Usually you get pro deals in the 20-30% off wholesale range, so cheaper than cost for retail shops. They are still making money on it though, most of those manufacturers have at least a 50% markup from production cost to wholesale, then of course another 50% markup from wholesale to your MSRP price. In my experience, most "pro deals" are at wholesale or even 5-10% above. Deals below wholesale are for the truly deserving - sponsored athletes (i.e., they have a contract with the manufacturer) or sponsored organizations (ditto). These expenses are typically budgeted through the marketing department. To argue that you're somehow underwriting someone else's undeserved climbing trip supposes that 1) you have some right to control the marketing strategy of a company and 2) if they didn't advertise through athlete sponsorships, they would give you a discount on their product instead. I don't think it would work that way... I don't mind trips that are linked to raising money for some cause, providing that the funds donated are used 100% for the cause and not for paying for the trip. I recall there was someone locally arranging "benefit climbs" in which the funds raised first went to pay for trip expenses and staffing (like his paycheck) before going to the charity. Such a scam. In comparison, the Climb for Clean Air that RMI, Timberline Mountain Guides, and the American Lung Association have been running for years requires participants to pay the guide service separately from fund raising, and must raise funds to a minimum threshold to participate. Believe me, there is a whole proven marketing stregey regarding the psychology in both getting your product on athletes and "opinion makers", and in using challenging events like races, climbs, and remote expeditions for fund raising. It works. If you don't care for the athletes sponsored by a company or the causes being supported by a climb or event, then you can, of course, simply not purchase from that company or donate to that cause. That's your power as a customer and donor.

    Eldorado Peak

I agree with Jason - the crevasse risk is relatively low, and in August the crevasses will eventually push you left onto the rock portion of the ridge, which you follow to the highest dry point until stepping back onto the snow for the final push to the summit. By August the summit ridge really depends on the summer history. I've seen it a knife edge that could be au cheval'ed, and I've seen it casual enough that the need for a rope is questioned. Last August I summited in a cloud-bank whiteout with no horizon or contrast with fresh snow covering up any boot pack, forcing me to pitch it out for the leader. Feel free to pm me if you have any follow-up questions. By August I'll likely have reached the summit on Eldorado a few times. -Chris
  13. Used for approximately 20 days last season in Japan, these are perfect backcountry powder boards. Bindings are mounted for someone in the US 11 boot range. Dimensions of the skis are 174cm, 140-114-118. So good I just picked up my next pair, just in a size longer better suited for my heft. MSRP would be $1200 - yours for 20% below wholesale at $620.00. Shipping and payment fees not included. Photos available for serious inquiries. Chris

  23. Check with Timberline Mountain Guides - they're local and might have beta.
  24. Was just up there last weekend, and the only bare ice is small zone just above the bergschrund. The majority of the face is still a steep-ish snow climb. And the NF of Buckner certainly looked out of condition from our view at Klawatti Col.
  25. I agree with DPS completely. This is the one piece of gear that I don't skimp on. I've found that a tent adds 5-10 degrees of insulation. I'll also sleep in my clothes which seems to add a few more degrees and makes getting up in the morning a lot easier. I use a 20 degree bag for all 4 seasons here, and a 30-40 degree bag for June-September (and this year, for May). I've had a Feathered Friends Swallow for my 4-season bag, and a Vireo for my summer bag, for over 10 years. The Vireo is finally looking dirty and beat up enough that I'm considering replacing it - with another Vireo.
