Back on subject - it was rather disappointing to see how quickly those republicans with a spine folded under the political pressure of the white house. McCain is so floppy it's not funny as he considers the run for the nomination in a year. Fairweather is right on one thing - we have done similar things when we were scared before - see the Japanese internment. And we have regretted it as we will this. And the congress are a bunch of sheep. Our senators voted the against the bill, which is something I guess.

No doubt that there is a fraction of the Islamic nations that is reactionary and intolerant. It is unfortunate that, as a nation, we are codifying our retreat from democratic values. Fear is leaving liberty in its wake.

I was walking across campus the other day when some pointy-headed hippie bumpeded into me. I was surprised because I had just left my workout and my guns were blazing. I recently started lifting pianos as there were not engough weights in the gym. I weigh 110 lbs but can now press 800. I think this dude came straight from his mens sociology class or something as he was extremely belligerent, and started spewing out rages against the matriarchal machine. I just continued to back-pedal with a series of but..but...but. I assumed my buffed-out body would be a deterrent to such attacks, but alas, while most normal people respect me from afar, some are not worthy. Did I mention that I detest Che shirts, yups in coffe shops, and liberals. Or did I tell you about the guy I roomed with who wore black all the time and was a "labor activist"? I'm a geomorphologist with an M.S. wiseguy and will make $80k this year. The time and cost of commuting just makes no sense to me, plus the environmental cost. And yes I have a family and a house. If I lost my current job for whatever reason and couldn't find something close I'd go independent.

Commuting is the stupidiest thing around. Why would you want to spend several hours each day going back and forth in a line? I've never had a job where I can't get to work or home via a bicycle or running, and I never will. What a waste of time and resources.

And yes, those compassionate conservatives are at it again as we speak. The House of Representatives, in the wee hours, just passed major budget cuts to student loan and grant programs, food stamps, medicade, enforcement of child support, early childhood education and a host of other social programs. Next vote coming up (this is serious) is a huge tax break and capital gains tax break that primarily benefits the wealthy and piles on the deficit. These people are pigs.

And in THIS instance, the guy neither made a mistake (unless you consider soloing 4th class a "mistake", I don't), nor did he turn it into a big media adventure story (he ain't gettin' rich from that summitpost trip report). Points for reading comprehension. The 15 minutes of fame thing is a bit odd in our culture. A relative gave me the Ralson book and I did read it. Seems like it was an endless tale of reckless and poorly planned trips that became "adventures". Though the he did keep his head about him once his arm got stuck. Was it Nanson who said "If it turns out to be an adventure it wasn't planned well". Upon return to his ship from the south pole Admunsen basically said things went as planned, it was a little cold, but no big deal. And then there is Scott. If he survived which one would have a book deal? Or an internet site? It is amazing how every accident or wrong turn in the mountains that turns into an epic has to be displayed on the internet. 15 minutes of fame indeed.
