  1. Interesting... I can think of one person who got severely injured in an unsafe shop and he said he was being courted by lawyers to sue. I wonder if they were going at some other angle. Or maybe he was just making that stuff up because he thought it made him sound cool.
  2. Remember to be pissed off at the people who pay workers under the table too. I work in trauma rehab and have seen quite a few people who have brain injuries, spinal cord injuries or burns from working for people under that table. Remember if you are paying someone and he gets hurt, the man is gonna come down on you and you are gonna pay a lot in Labor and Industries and tax back charges along with fines and possible criminal charges. Not to mention what you would get sued for. Those of us who have made a trip to the ER might remember one of the first questions they ask you is if the injury happened while you were working...
  3. OK, so my Elerid helmet is going to be the best for taking a hit from falling debris. The thing that sketches me out about those kind of helmets is that they appear to offer minimal protection for a side impact. I figure if you have some sort of catastrophic fall, you are much more likely to hit your head on the side. If I landed in the direction the hard shell helmets are intended to take hits (straight from the top) I am going to snap my neck anyway. So if I am climbing in an area were I feel there is low risk from rockfall above me, I feel safer with styrofoam helmet when I'm the climber. If I am the belayer, I'll wear the edelrid. Granted, this situation only applies to 1 pitch rock climbs. Anyway, does that seem logical to others? Anyone have stats that breakdown types and mechanisms of head injuries while climbing?
  4. Unfortunately stats show that previous traumatic brain injury has one of the strongest correlations with future traumatic brain injury. Looks like your buddy might have fit that mold. Sorry to hear about that. What do you all think about the hard shell helmets that are lined with foam? I would figure that might afford more protection for a side impact than a typical hard shell/strap helmet and it might still hold together for a second bounce. Or is a foam helmet shot in one impact no matter what?
  5. If zoom is important to you, the Pentax Optio 450 has a 5x optical with a few more bells and whistles than the s400. The trade-off is that its probably about 15-20% bigger. Its about the same price and is also 4 megapixels. Its worked well for me.

    Washingtonmobiles!

    The Chevy Gorst rocks!
  7. I got some paw protectors at Petsmart (Muttlucks or something like that) that work pretty well. I really have to cinch down the velcro to make them stay on though. My dog doesn't like them at first but then she gets so excited to be out in the snow she forgets about them pretty quickly.
  8. I met some French Canadiens in Costa Rica a couple years back. They were adament that in our lifetime Canada would become part of the US. They said there are just way to many natural resources in Canada and the US corporate machine would need to consume them. They thought it would all start with Canada accepting the US dollar as their currency. Kinda wierd coming from Canadiens. I have never met any other Canadien that would ever entertain such an idea. Maybe they were just jaded because they were from Quebec.
  9. The parka is taken! Michael Layton and cj001f, I appreciate you guys validating my offer.
  10. Actually, I looked into it and the synthetic insulation is specially formulated to have an higher R-factor when in proximity to XX chromosomes. Warm enough for a man, pH balanced for a woman. Yeah, "women's cut" is probably misleading beacuse I doubt its really different from the "men's." Nonetheless, the label does say "womens." If you are male and you find the parka fits, I give you the mothboy88 promise of absolute confidentiality and will never tell a soul that you are wearing a "women's" jacket. I will even go so far as to in all likelyhood violate several federal laws by cutting out the tag that so blatanlty polarizes humanity by assigning a gender label to an inanimate garment. However, the astute observer will notice the zipper pull is on the left side instead of the right as males are used to. And that detail could be the difference between life and death as you rely upon procedural muscle memory in a hypoxic stupor at high altitude. Just wanted to throw in that disclaimer.
  11. Realized as I was posting that I neglected to include some vital info. Its a women's cut and medium size.

    NEW CAR!

I figure its got to be a bad sign if the car can't handle hauling a freaking Yakima rack. Can it haul a driver if he's had a meal in the last 5 hours?
  16. Where did you get that photo? I went to that high school my freshman year. My sister played in that band for 4 years. Wierd to see a photo from my San Diego high school in this context...
  17. Make sure you get the prescription fungicide pill. The non-prescription crap they sell at the drug store is worthless. The Rx stuff can be a bit expensive and takes four months for most people. And you have to get your blood tested while you take it to make sure its not damaging your liver. But its really the only effective way to really get rid of that stuff.
  18. The Seattle TV news (paragon of journalistic excellence) was sayingthis morning that it is believed he was actually electrocuted. Whether he was killed by the shock or the fall caused by the shock... they didn't say. So here's a question. Would a "buildering" accident show up in the Accidents in North American Mountaineering book? I suppose not if they always stick to their title and only report pure mountaineering accidents. It would be interesting to see statistical data on this stuff.
  19. Funny you should bring that up. Cocaine is another paradoxical drug. Natives in South America will have their little kids chew on Coca leaves to calm them down.
  20. I've experienced that, back in the college days drinking coffee pretty much non-stop during term paper/ final exam crunch. After you take in enough caffeine, I think your system finally just rebels and shuts down. Maybe a self-defense mechanism so you pass out before you can kill yourself? In children caffiene paradoxically acts as a sedative. Perhaps you were acting particularly childish that day?

  22. like this? http://www.verticalendeavors.com/ve/boyscouts.htm Word. Just maybe a bit more specialized.
  23. I think the powers that be in the climbing world should create merit badges that can be displayed on one's helmet. There could be ones for knot tying, sandbagging, bolting next to cracks...
  24. FYI, Google is offering a free anti-popup program. The catch is that you have to have a Google tool bar on your browser. They also try to track your browsing habits but it is easy to opt-out. Its working pretty well. I have had about 76 blocks in about 4 hours of surfing. It doesn't get everything though. Anybody have suggestions about a good program for blocking? I especially hate those grey window pop-unders that sneak through even when you aren't surfing.
