  1. "Mother? Not Mother?" "I don't know if yer up on current events, but we just got our asses kicked." "We must not have a mineshaft gap." "Help! Help! I'm being repressed! Come see the violence inherent in the system" ------------ BOBBY I'll have an omelette, no potatoes. Give me tomatoes instead, and wheat toast instead of rolls. WAITRESS No substitutions. BOBBY What does that mean? You don't have any tomatoes? WAITRESS No. We have tomatoes. BOBBY But I can't have any. Is that what you mean? WAITRESS Only what's on the menu... A Number Two: Plain omelette. It comes with cottage fries and rolls. BOBBY I know what it comes with, but that's not what I want. WAITRESS I'll come back when you've made up your mind... BOBBY Wait, I've made up my mind. I want a plain omelette, forget the tomatoes, don't put potatoes on the plate, and give me a side of wheat toast and a cup of coffee. WAITRESS I'm sorry, we don't have side orders of toast. I can give you an English muffin or a coffee roll. BOBBY What do you mean, you don't have side orders of toast? You make sandwiches, don't you? WAITRESS Would you like to talk to the manager? BOBBY You have bread, don't you, and a toaster of some kind? WAITRESS I don't make the rules. BOBBY Okay, I'll make it as easy for you as I can. Give me an omelette, plain, and a chicken salad sandwich on wheat toast -- no butter, no mayonnaise, no lettuce -- and a cup of coffee. She begins writing down his order, repeating it sarcastically: WAITRESS One Number Two, and a chicken sal san -- hold the butter, the mayo, the lettuce -- and a cup of coffee... Anything else? BOBBY Now all you have to do is hold the chicken, bring me the toast, charge me for the sandwich, and you haven't broken any rules. WAITRESS (challenging him) You want me to hold the chicken. BOBBY Yeah. I want you to hold it between your knees.

    F'n dogs

Back when I was 15, I was riding home on my bike through the suburbs on my way home from school, when these two dobbermans came charging around from the back of this guy's house. I took off like lance armstrong, and blew through the next stop sign, These dogs were surprisingly quick dogs. This happened several times. Finally, I went by that way, and I went on foot. I kept a nice fat Baseball bat on the far side of my body, out of sight. Then the dogs came running from the back of the house. I saw the guy looking at me from his back yard. The dogs approached, and I assumed the Conan Stance. Ready to crack some skull. The dude started forward, and called the dogs off. With one command, the dogs turned and returned to the yard... I guess they were pretty well trained. I didn't have any problems riding my bike past there again.

    Tax cut analysis

People said the same thing when Reagan ran up the deficit... It seems like we paid the whole thing off, and it sure didn't hurt that much. Looking for lighting to strike twice are we? Naw, expecting history will repeat itself.

  8. Blake, I got the impression that you wanted something mellow, and you'd like to be home in time for a late supper on Sunday... Here are some more mellow ideas then the ones given so far: Seven Finger Jack and Mt. Maude are class 2 or 3 scree walks in the Entiate range. The larches are stellar around there right now. The view from either of those 9000' peaks would be worth the hike. Cathedral Rock (Class 4 & Chossy, but it has a nice profile as you hike up to it), camp at Peggy's Pond, Climb Mt. Daniel (Glacier) the second day. Washington Pass: Beckey Rt(5.6) or SEWS S Arete(5.4 and easy for 5.4) would be easily done in the manner you described. I hear that Black Peak has an easy S. Shoulder and an interesting ridge climb (NE Ridge) and that you can hike in a short ways and camp at a nice lake... but I haven't done it yet.
  9. That's the word on the street. It's all about the Fat Lobed Cams down there.
  10. Those Red Rocks around Sedona are good stuff. I'll be heading back to N.AZ this December for some more winter rock. Do you recommend a particular climb? edited to remove quote with so many photos.
  11. I got a new Stoke for Rock climbing this September. Stupid rain. I took a day off yesterday, and went to get on some classic routes in Leavenworth without the crowds. Givler's Crack is really outstanding. Fully deserving of the classic route status, but probably not deserving of the 5.8 rating. Doesn't really matter, cuz' it was fun, fun, fun. Did some bolted, slabby thing up there which was also decent, and then flailed around on Dogleg crack ... that jump from 5.8 to 5.8+ seemed like 3 or 4 grades
  12. It's the climber's job to get to the top of the route by any means necessary. It's the belayer's job to bear witness to this moment. If he pulls on draws and dogs his way up, then the belayer should make fun of him around the next campfire with a beer in hand. They both know they were glad to get off of that mountain before the storm hit and this need not be said. This is the way it has been. This is the way it should be. This is good style.
  13. Wasn't it Lowe who said, "The best climber is the one with the shortest memory"?
  14. 2) the occupying force must be extremely brutal (even passive resistance is resistance). The British did not have the stomach to continually shoot down scores of unarmed protestors (much to their credit).
  15. There are two paths to victory when you occupy another people: 1) You can convince the peoples that there life is improving because of your occupation. This requires good propoganda. 2) You can completely crush their will. Often this will mean killing them off almost entirely (see the Native Americans), and being overwhelmingly brutal. (The Germans occupied France faily effectively. The French had a strong resistance, but without external help, I doubt they would have ousted the Germans in several lifetimes.

  18. The climbing is a lot different. The rock takes gear differently. I would take it easy for the first climb or two until you get used to the rock. double up on red&pink tricam.
  19. I had the same thing last year and went to a P.T. 1) Good arch support made all the difference for me. 2) There are some stretches that can help a lot. 3) There are some muscle strenghtening exercises that will strengthen the supporting muscle around the knee. 4) Improving fitness will give you more energy to protect the knees at the end of a long alpine day.
