  10. So I'm headed down to NZ in January for 3-4 weeks, and due to the short time frame and busiest tourist season, would like to know your favorite tramp/trek, cragging area, park, etc. Doing the research, there are so many incredible things to see it's going to be hard to narrow it down to a few! So comments/suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated... I already saw the thread from a few months ago, but am looking for more specifics.. THANKS

    Cave Rock

Muff, I agree with you- closing Cave Rock will only set precedent for who knows how many other closures for similar/other reasons... I just think the 'just assimilate them' attitude doesn't really need to be brought into it... The cave dwellers I believe were the Anasazi people (I think- anyone else remember?) and from some of my readings I believe some of the SW tribes did even climb some cliffs, albeit not the same as today's form...

    Cave Rock

Trask, must you use this term? Do any of you anti's even know anything about our government's history with Native peoples? And why all they have now are casinos and a sacred rock? At the very least, support Alternative 2, and do a little reading about how our nation for the past 120 years has fucked over hundreds of tribes, then maybe you won't slander them.

    GIS day

quote: yes, everyone should give your GIS peeps a big hug, wad of cash, or...other favor yes, like a job!!! soon to be unemployed gal seeking GIS job..... *shameless seeking employment attempt* otherwise, i may just have to take a trip to new zealand!!! quote: Huh? Jizz Day, you say? A celebration is in order! yes, GIS is fun!
  15. yeah, it's a bit deceiving. i would like to lead some easy stuff but for that reason i haven't yet. it's hard to tell if/when you're gonna get super pumped and have to put in a screw on some sketchy part.
  16. TLGess, There is no reason why you should give up something you've just begun, just b/c some people think you should chill out a bit. If you look a little more closely behind The Law God's post (albeit a little tact-less), you might see that he's trying to tame the ego a little, and show you that ice climbing can be unpredictable. It's great to be VERY enthusiastic, but you can also have some negative consequences when you've got such a gung-ho attitude and aren't thinking about the reality of it. I'm sure you'll be a kick-ass ice climber, just be PATIENT and start easy to not get in over your head!!
  17. are we crazy for leaving sat night and being there sun morn/early afternoon, and then leaving mon eve? this is all from the ham of course, so LOTS of driving. but with you all sounds like too much fun, oh, and climbing of course. that is if it doesn't rain

We'll see you there too Muffy- check yo pm's woohoo!!
  19. Thanks guys, Norman. There are the basics, that aren't necessarily even just for backcountry 'first aid', I mean, walking down the street seeing someone lying there or if you see someone in a car accident. I was more interested in the WFR, it's just too expensive for now. WFA was a great start though!
  20. I'm not necessarily talking about carrying a first aid kit- glad you're carrying one now though Cavey I mean like knowing how to assess if someone's in shock (not always that easy to tell), or how to tell if they have a spinal injury, or if they're internally bleeding. A lot of times even if you do have training, you will not always know these things. If someone has taken a leader fall, and decked, and 'only' have a broken ankle, would anyone/most think to assess a spinal injury as well? I don't know, I'm pretty paranoid about being in a situation like this I'll admit, but what I learned was that it's very difficult to not get emotionally/psychologically charged if something serious or traumatic has happened, and to try and see if there isn't a more serious injury. Anyone have any stories of being in a situation like this and what you did? (if it's not too hard for you to discuss) Anyways, I'd recommend the course, $140 but well worth it! (except no new tools for me for awhile )
  21. quote: dogs are excellent tent heaters yeah, unless they choose you for a sleeping pad and immobilize you so that you can't get some air!!!
  22. Don't know if this has been discussed recently, but out of curiosity, are most of you here trained in some sort of first aid or backcountry first aid? Passing Stefan's partner (vegetablebelay?) coming down the trail to get help for him, my head was then swimming with questions: what if that was my partner up there? what if the injury was potentially fatal (ie spinal cord, head injury, etc)? what would I do? would I know what to do? Acknowledging my gumbyness, I realized that if I am going to be climbing or mountaineering, I need to know what to do in a situation like this. I don't have any kind of Mountie training (do they teach this stuff in their courses?) or others, so I made the decision for myself that I shouldn't be out here if I don't have some proper first aid training for a bad situation. So last weekend I took a Wilderness First Aid course, and it was great! But I was surprised again that out of the 25 or so people there, almost all were there to re-cert their WFR's for their jobs, not merely for their personal recreation choices. Any thoughts/comments?? maybe i'm the only gumby...
  23. Cavey, are you not a cuddler?? with a cute little one like that he'd be in my arms half the time! what's his name?
  24. Glad you're here to talk about this Stefan- here's to a speedy recovery we passed you're partner at SC wall and it was an utterly helpless feeling on our part, being hours away to even try to help. quote: I have always hated rappels due to the lack of control I have and I will continue to hate rappels.I agree completely- I grapple with this every time doing something alpine. I think I will always try and back up the anchor for peace of mind as well as safety hope you heal soon
  25. quote: anyway, it was interested to listen to the ranger/geologist (or whoever the hell it was) talk about how the caves form differently each year depending on the snowmelt patterns. some years there's only one big cave and other years there are several. I've been going there almost every year since I was 6 yrs old and there has been variations in the number of caves that are there. Cool place for easy access, and neat history.
