  1. Our group of 4 was up on the North Sister mid-day Saturday when a woman asked us if we had seen her partner. We had just completed the traverse on the west side and were headed south toward the Middle Sister. We called 911 to initiate the SAR and escorted her off the mountain. It appears that he fell in the area of the snow traverse and slid off the west side down onto some rocks and scree.
  2. Anyone know if you can convert a pair of Charlet Moser crampons that have straps to step in or semi-automatic crampons? I got a pair real cheep but would prefer to not have to hassle with the straps.
  3. I was up there 2 weekends ago [August 2-4]. Warm and dry. The traverse is in good shape--a little more than one rope length. Not another group on the whole route!
  4. The Gore-Tex minimizes the break-in period as compared to leather. Traditional leather boots are stiff and can take many miles of blisters before they really fit your feet and get soft. Not so with Gore-Tex.
  5. Anyone know the conditions on top? Is there still a lot of snow on the traverse from the red saddle?
  6. Try the Garmont Tower GTX. They have some flex which makes them comfortable for approach hikes but they are rigid enough for semi-pneumatic crampons. Because they are Gore-Tex there is no breaki-in period. Even better, they are light. The other two boots are stiff so will not be very comfortable on long approaches.
  7. The NPS web site says that "On July 6th the ice cliff calved car sized chunks onto the traverse below the ice cliff...on three separate occasions. All parties climbing on the 6th turned back due to icefall hazard."
  8. Anyone have some beta on the Kautz?
  9. Did the Frostbite route this weekend. Lots of snow and a bunch of slots opening up. We had sunny warm days so the snow was getting soft. Just below the top there was about 50 feet of ice--a screw or two would have been nice as it was too hard to drive a picket.

We went in from the east via Pole Creek to do Middle Sister this past weekend. Still plenty of snow. Got a bit more Saturday night drifting up to 4 inches in places. Should be good skiing
  11. Anyone know what the current climbing conditions are on Mt. Garibaldi in BC?
