  1. I'm voting Republican

yeah, you "school" me. you're like a tick, a louse, or a mosquito: an annoying insect that sucks blood, and has little purpose in life and deserves to be burned off, picked with a comb and crushed, or simply swatted. Wow, you are the undisputed king of teh internet BBS. I am sure your parents are real proud of you. Good thing you could just yell to tell them considering you live in their basement.
  2. pakistan

Hmmm... If someone fired an RPG at me, I think I would have done the same thing. Especially given the location of the "attack." That is a real hotspot for AlQueda. Seems to me that there was a communication breakdown between the forces or the "Pakistani" soldiers might have not been who they said they were.

Did you have to work at being stupid or did it come naturally? It seemed an appropriate question to ask did it not? Unless of course you didn't even read the article. You did read the article... didn't you Hugh?
  4. Thanks Dennis! -Impeach the Bastard!

True enough. What would you do if the dems actually grew some balls? Shit my pants.

About what I would expect from you. However, now that you brought them up, what is wrong with 'honor' and 'sacrifice'? You Lefties preach individual sacrifice for the good of the collective. How is a soldier's willingness to sacrifice any different? Further, how is 'honor' now a bad word? The problem with "honor" and "sacrifice" they're basically lofty-sounding abstractions designed for the parents of dead children and inscriptions on tombstones, to give the living some meaning for senseless waste. They have no meaning whatsoever in and of themselves: the same language is used by kamikazis, Prussians, Commies, Doughboys, Mongols, or Marines. The Nazi SS talked loads of this stuff, but through history's lens were they honorable and virtuous? Submission and sacrifice to the State is the essence of fascism but it's always dressed in the very same terms you unquestioningly swallow. Any "leftie" worth his salt would never accept your premise about "preaching individual sacrifice for the good of the collective". The ones I like tend to be a bit more historically literate and less prone to razzle-dazzle marketing campaigns dressed up as patriotism. Finally, "honor" is a bad word when it's used as first to charm impressionable boys and then as ideological cover to mask national chauvinism and belligerence. Denying the existence of honor is a long tradition of those lacking that trait. Honor is real and I have seen it personally. If less people would forget what honor was, this world might not be so bad. Things like Pride, Duty, Self Sacrifice and Honor should not be bad words. They are ideals that we MUST instill in our children; not try to erase. Perhaps the reason you are a nhilist is that you have nothing greater than yourself to believe in than a washed up philosophy that killed more people than the plague. My point is not that these things don't exist, it's that the relationships between the abstract ideas and what they're realistically in service to need to be examined. I think people can be honorable, exhibit virtuous qualities, etc. but that killing people in the service to and for the benefit of the State (much less invading and occupying Iraq) doesn't meet the criteria. Would you say this to a D-Day vet or a beach storming pacific theatre vet?? I think not... No, I'd have to yell it in their antique ear phone holes because they're so damn old! I say this not to disparage the hearing impaired, but to illustrate the fact that the last legitimate military action the US was engaged in was 60+ years ago! Everybody knows this and that's why the pundits and politicians have to fall all over each other evoking Hitler's ghost and Pearl Harbor and Nazis and everything else every time they want to start (or stay in) a goddamned war. Fricking infantile political culture in this country! Gahd. So, you opposed the actions in Bosnia, then? Did Germany attack us? I can't remember. How skinny can we make it? what? What 'what'? can you hear me now? good!
  6. Thanks Dennis! -Impeach the Bastard!

Those last two posts work together quite well. The dems come out with a whole lot of hollering and posturing and the Repubs just kinda go along with it. Until an antiquated grenade goes off and blows the whole preposterous charade off the table.
  7. Prole, Jim and Treetoad on suicide watch

I love the question at the end: "are you in cuba?...." Yeah, because if I were in Cuba, making $20 a day, I would so have a high speed internet connection and a powerbook.
  8. high gas prices

If this is true... Oil to hit $150 /bbl then how can this be true? No muthafukin shortage here bitches!
  9. Mt Hood Cough? or HAPE?

uhm... ok. anti-tussive means cough supressant. There is no physiological reason that an anti-tussive would not work simply because of altitude. Same goes for hydration/ hard candies. Keeping the mucous membranes moist will prevent the aforementioned "dry cough." the bacitracin will just keep the dried out mucous membranes of the nares from drying out and becomming infected.
  10. Not a good start to the week

I once learned in a far away land that when confronted with a cohort's death, often others will chalk his death up to inexperience, lack of preparedness or being foolhardy. In that world, like in the world of mountain climbing, shit happens. It is good to remember that and embrace that. You never know when it will be your party getting berated on this website for paying the piper.
  11. Mt Hood Cough? or HAPE?

There is also something called High-Altitude Pharyngitis and Bronchitis. It is pretty similar to what you described: 1) Sorethroat 2) Chronic cough (dry or productive) 3) Dry or cracking nasal passages/ rhinorheah Most of the suggestions are prety intuitive: 1) hydration 2) Losenges/ hard candies 3) codeine or another anti-tussive agent 4) nasal bacitracin (anti-biotic ointment) or vaseline
  12. Mt Hood Cough? or HAPE?

While low grade fevers, fast heart rate and fast respiratory rate are features of HAPE, mental status changes and ataxia (clumsiness) are not... Altered mental status and ataxia are feature of high altitude CEREBRAL edema (HACE). Some people get both HAPE and HACE together but many get HAPE alone and would not have altered mental status etc. It's an important distinction because if you see altered mental status and ataxia going on as well, your choice of medications to treat the problem would change a bit... you'd add Dexamethasone for the HACE symptoms. Descent remains the best treatment for both but if that isn't feasible... meds are necessary. I am staring at my PA reference right now. It says "mental changes, ataxia, decreased LOC, coma" for HAPE.

  14. National Guard: At least Canada is in N America...

Well, I guess that's just the price we pay for liberating them. All the most reason to stay and continue liberating them till they can't be liberated anymore. They have hated you for over a thousand years. I highly doubt even you could possibly think that 10 years ago would have been any safer for you. Hint: I gave you an example a few posts back about a few climbers that went there. You might have heard of them before.
  15. National Guard: At least Canada is in N America...

Why don't you take up the challenge then boss. Since my views are unfounded, you obviously would have no problem going there and saying: "what's up guys! I hate Bush too! Want to party?" Afterwhich, they promptly cut off your head, piss down your trachea, burn your body and drag it behind a truck for a day and a 1/2.
  16. Mt Hood Cough? or HAPE?

I think he was stating that his symptoms persisted for that duration rather than that being their onset.
  17. National Guard: At least Canada is in N America...

Go take a trip to Syria, Iran, and Afghanistan. Alone. I remember a group of climbers doing that like 10 years back or something. Seems I remember something about a 500 foot fall and an old yogurt ball. Remember this was before me and my ilk "made them mad at america."
  18. National Guard: At least Canada is in N America...

There is no honor in this enemy. -He uses children to fight for him. -He uses women and children to sheil his attack knowing full well we will not fire back. -He uses fear to persuade civilians to help him. -He uses indescriminate ordinances. -He detonates ordinances MEANT for civilians. -His ultimate aim is genocide. -He fights to ensure that another country remains oppressed. -He fights for the destruction of modernity. Number 4 from the "How to Tell If You're in A Cult" List: "Unreasonable fear about the outside world, such as impending catastrophe, evil conspiracies and persecutions." Uhm. This is notan unreasonable fear. It is normal fear to walk down a street and not know whether you will get blown up if it has happened multiple times before. You are quite the one to talk about conspiracy theories there ace. Your ideas about the innerworkings of the government and the US militart (which it is clear you know nothing about) are absolutely legendary. Dang that double edged sword eh?
  19. Mt Hood Cough? or HAPE?

It certainly seems possible. It is hard to say now that you are on terrra firma. Some other signs too look out for are low grade fevers and tachycardia and tachypnea at rest, ataxia or any mental changes. blood tinged sputum (as someone noted earlier) is a really late sign. The only real way to find out for sure is usually ABG, pulse oximetry or seeing if going down helps.

  21. Thanks Dennis! -Impeach the Bastard!

Sounds like a personal problem. Maybe you should do something about that.
  22. Thanks Dennis! -Impeach the Bastard!

Habeus Corpus? What's that? Though it was ruled that Habeus Corpus does in fact apply regardless of citicenship, I would think that the Geneva Conventions' categorization of these men would suggest that there is a whole lot more that could be done to these men legally.

Name a war where we didn't do this. Hell, they even had to do this for the president of the US to convince him that we should join the fight. This is not a new practice; probably goes back a few thousand years.

did you read my last response to you matt? I think not. I clearly stated that breaking the law was not part of one's oath. This clearly shows that following orders is not a carte blanche to circumvent the law (ala nuremburg) but rather a way to ensure order and more often than not, prevent attrocities like the ones you seem to be so fond of stating that officers like to order.
