Yeah, try that Maxim 5.5 or 6 tech cord
  7. I've never paid any duty either.
  8. Can't beat a Patagucci mid or lt weight zip pullover.
  9. See this link for inspiration http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1814399383
  10. Hugh Herr lost both legs in a climing accident on NH's Mt. Washington years ago. He now works with and designs artificial legs. See this site. www.ai.mit.edu/people/hherr/hherr.html I've also seen him lead 5.9 at the gunks with his "new" legs. Good luck.
  11. Got my Pika Mountaineering Catalog and the company's disclaimer is direct, to the point and stated the way warnings should be stated. Quoted from the catalog: We need to let you know you can die! We need to let you know that you can suffer a long, painful, miserable existence as a result of an accident, an act of God or just because someone else simply screwed up. The gear in this catalog cannot save you! It should not have to. You are responsible for your own ass. Watch out! Be careful! Knowledge is your only protection. Learn how to do things right the first time, especially when your life depends on it. Learn to fly before you jump out of the nest, Your family will appreciate it. If you are out there to get killed, please do not buy our gear. Put your hard cash towards a fancy memorial service. DON'T BECOME TALUS FOOD
  12. Your financing your next trip! I don't work from paycheck to paycheck, I work from trip to trip!
  13. At the initial bid price they're $3.63 each, used. ($4.42 at the Buy it Now price) At Northern Mountain Supply, new blems are $ 4.39.
  14. Don't be dissing on the Bird, that's like making fun of Muhammad Ali.
  15. quote: Originally posted by allison: Uh, it has less to do with "prisoners making stuff" and more to do with "not being made by people working under acceptable labor standards." What unacceptable labor standards?
  16. I just bought the Khamsin 30 and love it. Only difference I could see with the 32 was the 32 had beefier waist belt. I wanted less so it didn't interfere with my harness.
  17. You can't beat Arc Teryx. For alpine, I use the Jannd Mountaineering Alpine Pack.
  18. RMI's been advertising heavy in the big climbing mags for guides, both beginner and advanced.
  19. quote: Originally posted by Idea Guy: "I would like to hear how you guys "bundle" up this mass of cord/webbing in a convenient, easy to get out again manner. " Electrician's Braid, knitter's crochet, successive slip knots, whatever you want to call it. My 24-foot cordelette (a 12-foot loop), grab and hold the joining knot (double grapevine, double fishermans, opposed double overhands, whatever you want to call it)and slide to the far end, put the two 'ends' together folding the original length in half. Make a small loop next to the joining knot (in all 4 strands), push a bight through the loop, push another bight through the first bight, and so on... until you have only a few inches left, slip the end through the last bight. Clip the end and the beginning. Total length 10-inches, making it smaller than the 'overhand' method and quicker than the 'coil' method, and much faster to deploy than both. This is how I do it. I just couldn't say it as clearly as idea guy.
  20. P.S. My only gripe with guided climbs in the "always one in a group" whiner.
  21. Go ahead and do it. Don't listen to the crap. When starting out I had no mentor or someone willing to "teach me the ropes". I took basic mountaineering and climbing courses and would do it again. Bottom line, climbing is dangerous. Take the time and learn right. Later you can sort out the good from the bad and develop your own style and methods that work best for you. Oh... and have fun!
  22. Understand completely jman. The other day my little guy lost Rocky Canyon Rescue Hero on the trail down and we weren't leaving till he was found.
  23. Saw a guy at the moraine camp in the Boston Basin with penny loafers on.
