  1. Okay - I really cannot believe that Enumclaw and Eatonville are drawing more votes than Kapowsin or Carbonado. Eatonville has flower baskets, for christ's sake! What appears to be the main source of entertainment in Kapowsin and Carbonado is to abandon old vehicles (often mobile meth labs) on the side of the highway, then over the course of a week slowly demolish them, culminating in a midnight-torching. (Of course, the cops won't touch these things in order to have them towed. So they sit for weeks, sometimes months, along the shoulder.)

    laptop advice

I own a Dell desktop computer and have to admit that, being far from computer savvy... I had a hell of a time trying to decipher their website and ordering procedures. I really had no idea what I was buying. I looked into a Dell laptop when my old Toshiba went kaput, but again, I couldn't decipher it. I bought an HP laptop, and I am absolutely in love with it. It's the perfect size, quick to start up, and I like the configuration. Sometimes I like to just admire the thing from across the room, that's how much I like it. I will never buy a Toshiba (or Dell) again. I bought it from Best Buy. What a mistake. Avoid Best Buy like the plague, if you don't already.
  3. As I recall, there is an awful lot going on up at the top of Heart Mountain...
  4. This does suck. I have always felt pretty grateful/surpised to have a somewhat-decent place to camp with decent toilets, for free. But I don't feel too great about paying to camp somewhere without water... to me that should go hand-in-hand, esp. in the desert.
  5. Shock was always a very confusing topic to me, until a paramedic friend once defined it as "inadequate perfusion." It's that simple. There is also a fourth kind of shock in addition to those alpinfox listed above, cardiogenic shock. This is basically reduced cardiac output secondary to some sort of heart disease or trauma. Examples: myocardial infarction, congenital heart disease, drug toxicity, pericardial tamponade, traumatic injuries, arrythmia, septic shock, and many other sources. In other words, the body is not adequately perfused because the pump has failed.
  6. The Wildberry, which opened up last year, is pretty decent and much more reasonably priced than Copper Creek or the National Park Inn. I've only had breakfast there, because they don't serve beer.
  7. citated? new one for Websters! Citated is a perfectly cromulent word!
  8. I saw a marmot at 13,500' on the Kautz Glacier in '00. He didn't look like he was feeling well, just kept walking in circles near a big crevasse.
  9. This is not true. Many park rangers can (and some actually will) issue citations for climbing, or backcountry camping, without the required permits. The Legal Authority for this comes from Title 36, the Code of Federal Regulations. 36 CFR 1.6 Part 7 authorizes park superintendents to create special regulations for certain recreational activities. At Mount Rainier this includes climbing and hiking on glaciers above the designated high camps, and backcountry camping. I don't think very many people actually do get citated (or worse) each year but it does happen. Those are facts only, I am also not interested in lectures or ethical debates!
  10. With the exception of a few remnant patches, the snow doesn't begin until about a mile past Dick Creek, just before Moraine Park.
  11. Wow. Now that is one good-looking mountain!
  12. White Pass. They could learn to capitalize on snow-skating. You barely need any snow at all, just throw some rails up and the kiddies go crazy...
  13. It's not a beer, but it is seasonal (and almost in season!) I love the Big Time's barley wine. Mmmmmmm. Plus it's cheap - usually two glasses gives me a warm glow for the rest of the night!
  14. nah, there's a lot of good folk in them hills. it's the wilke-billies that you've got to look out for!
  15. Yes, in the hills above the coke ovens. By the ol' gravel pile. I've been climbing there a few times and find it nothing to get excited about. Pretty dirty, and do beware the locals. But... better than nothing when it's all you've got!!
  16. This was an absolutely beautiful post. Thanks for the reminder of how fragile it all is...
  17. I am thumbing my nose at Crystal Mountain this winter, and work is taking me to Mount Vernon for the winter. Myself and the Duke have splitboards and are quite adventurous and mountain-savvy - though unfamiliar with the area. Can anyone recommend some good backcountry areas in the Skagit and northwards? Thanks !

    Sex in Public

Here's one from the wildlife biology perspective: The main biological goal of a female species is to get impregnated. The main biological goal of a male is to spread his genes prolifically. So, I would think that MFF would be far more common than MMF. ???? Similar to the stereotypes of women wanting to settle down in relationships, while men are more promiscous.

A few years ago I was living in Capitol Hill/First Hill area. Several squirrels used to frequent the parking lot outside of my back window. The straggly, skinny sort of inner-city squirrels. One day I looked outside and saw three squirrels all chasing each other, rolling around, getting very excited. They then proceeded into a squirrel menage-a-trois. No mistaking it. I never felt the same way about that back parking lot again.
  20. Avalanche lilies... I have been told that there is an amazing display of beargrass on the north side of the Northern Loop trail this year. Windy Gap area.
  21. From what I have seen, snowshoes are not needed. Snow level is very high - think early July. Both the Tahoma Glacier and the Sickle look to be in great condition.
  22. These are all symptoms of bunions - big toe pointing inward, pain in big toe, pain on top of foot... My b-f has had serious problems with bunions, and they are truly debilitating. You should see a podiatrist, and one specially trained in sports medicine, too. Toss any shoes that cause those symptoms...
  23. I don't buy this at all. Who is making him "have" to hide online? Stop wasting precious years of her life, be a man and set her free. If her behavior's not perfect, all the more reason. That sucks, man. My heart goes out to your friend. I recently comforted a friend in the same situation - minus the engagement. The internet is going to be the undoing of our civilization. And I think your advice was dead-on.
  24. well, i'll be up there this weekend, but i'll let you know what i find!
  25. Anyone ventured up lately and have a snow report? Thanks...
