  1. You guys forgot to pay your Foreigner Powder Resource Fees. Backcountry's full of weenies and foreigners these days. Damn That gully looks tres cool. Way to kill it
  2. I reckon the NE fork of NJ Creek is a significant migratory route what with the straightforward connection to 8 mile creek, essentially forming a pretty workable and consistent high route between the Duffey and the Gates valleys.
  3. Radness. This winter won't quit - looks like more chillier than normal temps for the forseeable short term . . . Anybody heard wolves up in NJ Creek? When we were up there skiing a few months ago, we heard a pack howling but couldn't tell where it was exactly.
  4. Obviously the real advatage of mercernary forces working for the military is the ability to insulate yourself from responsibilitiy when shit goes bad, rather than the standard explanation of private contractors more able to provide specialized services. This logic breaks down though when you look at the fact that the average security contractor is making/charging the US govt more that it would cost to have the equivalent army officer in the same position . . .
  5. Make sure you use the seam seal specific to silnylon or else your shelter would look like a bad case of syphilis
  6. Take a beacon and a probe - I got burried by a pretty nasty dirtalanche at Nicomen a few years back . . . ran on decomposing hemlock facets
  7. It would be cool to something like that for BC, but I guess it would all be one big blue smudge
  8. During the next few weeks (which is when I assume you're coming out?) you could find anything from knee deep blower to knee deep slush, to refrozen crud, anon, anon. Check the condish the night before you leave in other words.

    G3 Skis

That's a good description of what I have always sensed about how I have ended up skiing on the RTs.

    G3 Skis

RTs have more camber, a bit stiffer, and turn quicker. If you're always in the BC the Revs are a better powder ski, but I like the RTs for "resorty" sidecountry days.

And you call yourself a consumer . . . terrible!

    G3 Skis

Movement makes the Goliath. Most people's only gripe with the Barons is that they are too beefy and stiff . . . usually heavier skis do better in the junk, no? G3, being a Canadian company, is still in the process of "convincing" some of the US and Euro markets - funny since they are ubiquitous and well-loved north of the border. They ARE a touch heavier than most manufacturers in my estimation, but that heft certainly comes in the form of a more durable product in my experience. The Reverend is probably the best powder ski for 90% of what you are going to find on the Coast. Rapid Transit is my favourite ski of all time - rails on the groomers and eats up the mank.
  13. Ha, thought you guys would be getting after that tip-off! Kool mo dee.
  14. Massive washout 800m from start. There are some details on bivouac.com as to how to bypass the slide, but it sounds look a good deal of screwing around, esp. with skis on the pack.
  15. Summer or winter? Have thought about a spring trip many times but the logisitics are brutal with preplacing cars and a heli drop off is looking attractive now that the Lizzie FSR is fawked. Also, since a lot of the trip is above 7500' on glaciers you need a week of good weather, something that has never meshed with my available time. Couple summer TRs in the BC Mountaineer circa 2000 or 2002(?)
  16. Reverse fakie 720 crotchgrab to a double nonfat vanilla macchiato What's the lowdown - when's the new book coming out? Any cool "new" areas? I remember when Alpine Select came out and Kevin McLane had a slide show a few months before . . . put up a picture of this big northfacing piece of ice and nobody knew where it was (Drew wasn't there ). When Kevin said it was the NF of Weart, it completely blew everyone's minds
  17. I think it's a head on shot that might not give an indication of angle. There's also I good cornice shot in that issue IIRC - which might mean some mandatory air
  18. Interesting that you got that storm layer to go. I was very impressed by how well it had bonded on Decker yesterday: could not get it to move on a north facing 35 degree slope. Below that it was 1F in hardness down a full metre to bottom of test pit. Guess the wind loading on Garibaldi probably negated the bonding that occured elsewhere as the storm started with warm temps. See any natural activity?
  19. All those suggested fixes will likely give you some nice tail delams in a few years. 1. Don't buy twin tips for backcountry 2. If you somehow end up with twintips by some cosmic event, use a standard loop on the tip but use the old green rubber tip loops for your tail attachment. 3. See #1
  20. Wonder if I should have retired that cam . . . Hmmm.
  21. If anyone is interested sleuthing out a 600m ice line, the SE face of Cirque (right side of photo) is pretty stellar if you can catch it in before it rots out. Pretty big lines back in that valley. After 4 trips I've only done one moderate gully climb and made it halfway up something too hard for me - timing seems key.
  22. Yep, that's the slope - the rock outcrops match my photos exactly. Unfortunately, after the thing went we weren't in much of a mood to look at forensics, and after we spent an hour digging in the brutal heat and 3600m fl the next morning, the "crime scene" had turned into a slurpee machine. I would be surprised if the thing would have gone 24hrs later . . . Yes, definitely a windslab, and about 1F in hardness from my quick prodding among the blocks where I ended up. Crown varied from about 30-80cms, slide was maybe 60m across and went for maybe 100m. Deposition was about 1m. PB, feel free to add your take as I'm going on memory here. Wind features on the rocks were a dead giveaway (in retospect) of cross loading. It was a SE aspect at ~7700'. Wish we had done a quick look-see at the bed surface, but we assumed it was on a sun crust.
  23. We all had our skis off at that point as we were bootpacking. Luckily, the slide didn't "grab hold" of the skis on our packs . . . Not reallly. We have written a letter and I'm awaiting a reply before I'll comment further on this.
