  1. Anyone been up to Static Point recently and have info on if it's dry and ready for some climbing?
  2. Strikes back! Dozens die in meatwave...
  3. Great thread. I think that regardless of the motivation or decision behind doing something solo, there is much to be learned from how you respond to situations when no one is watching. I know from my own experience that I respond very differently when I'm alone on technical ground than when with a partner. While the safety net of having a partner there (roped or no) is encouraging, the interpersonal dynamics give the experience a different flavor. If you are alone, the thought of "What will my partner think if I do XYZ?" simply never enters the equation. I won't say that it is a more pure experience because they are apples and oranges and they are both pure in their own context. That said, long days of light and fast x-country travel in the Sierras with a mix of climbing/running/head scratching have been some the best days of my life. The technical aspects have been focal points of a broader style of experience.
  4. I like what excel can do. i hate what excel tries to do for you. Use MATLAB instead.
  5. A fine example of well-honed spraymeister ability!
  6. If we really want to get that shark to jump, we could start discussing the ethics of the NPS (aka YOSAR) teaching how to set pins on a popular bouldering spot. That should get keep everyone happy as even the pad-happy people can get in on it. (1998, Puppy Dome). BTW- I'm not expressing any opinion here or naming any names. It should be stated that, while it didn't actually involve a rescue, it did imply a rescue by the fact that rescue personel were involved. There was a bit of a wet spot (more of a puddle really) that had to be avoided in order to stand properly to set the pin. PING!
  7. Nobody will argue that michelle getting getting down safe is a bad outcome. Most of the criticism was about getting in over her head which then required the use of pins. I think given the direct choice of catastrophic anchor failure and death, most people will pound a pin. But, that's not really the argument, is it? Notably, Lambone knew who placed the pins but didn't do any name calling (initially). If you want to know the details on his rescue, why don't you ask him yourself?

    Strong Bad Email

Ahhh yesssss Strongbad has finally infested CC.com along with his cronies the Cheat and strongsad... Note that there are many Flash extras built into the animations. On some of the emails you can move the arrow over text and get something special, or in certain parts of the animation, you can move the pointer to the right place and get an extra. Explore! "Just sitting around lookin' at a thing in a bag"
  9. Considering the amount of rainfall in the cascades, any slot canyons here would likely be choked with water and asking to drown you. It is a bit further than Rainier, but there is a pretty fun canyon stretch in the descent of Tenaya Canyon down in Yos. it is the part of the touron map marked "Don't go here" in big red letters. Maybe your friend should get into ridge descents- they're kinda like inverted canyons with better views...

    New England?

Lambone, Find me a nerdy academic job in Ashland and i will gladly move there. Thanks for all the great pointers on NE. It seems like it wouldn't be horrible to live there (good mtn biking), even though it's no PNW. It'll certainly be interesting to see where I end up!
  11. Getting close to graduating and having to actually get a job . The options increase pretty dramatically if I include NE in the list of areas that I'm willing to live. Obviously, there aren't huge mountains there, but there are apparently some good climbing and mountain biking spots out there. What's the scoop on life in New England for the outdoor-inclined. Specifically, upstate NY, NH and VM area. Thanks!

    World Population

Well, at least we know that religious organizations are actively trying to prevent birth control from being taught at home and abroad. There's pretty much nothing that will keep people from , so we might as well give them the option to not pop out too many kids while they are at it. On the other hand, I'm sure that there are arguments about social decline with loss of family infrastructure if you radically change the size and style of family, which can in turn lead to more problems too... Ahhh, if there were only easy answers.
  13. Kind of like when Doug Robinson accidentally left Galen Rowell's hammer and pins on the ground during the first clean ascent of HD (first clean ascent of any big wall for that matter)? I guess Rowell was a bit angry about that as he was on a photo shoot for NG at the time and was promising a successful wall route in photos.
  14. Did you get rained on? Any repeats of the "Aiding on Rainier" variation?

    Puritans?

Let me get this straight... You're asking this question in the 'Spray' section on cc.com? Well, I like to and , as much as anyone, so I'd have to say that the whole Puritan/Scarlet Letter routine is better off in the history books.
  16. No bad days here. Had a kick butt day of mtn biking yesterday and have tried enough muscles that being at the desk doesn't seem so bad on this fine Seattle monday. That is some funny stuff on the weather. What do you think would happen if Harry Woppler (an old housemate of mine was convinced that Woppler invented Doppler radar... the 'Woppler Doppler') said that?
  17. It is amazing how just a few word changes can completely change a news article. Example: Syria Asks UN to Put Heat on Nuclear Arms UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Syria, seeking to shift world attention from itself to Israel, asked the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday to help transform the world into a zone free of all weapons of mass destruction. Syria denies U.S. charges that it is developing chemical weapons, and accuses Washington of ignoring itself, which is widely assumed to have nuclear weapons. A draft resolution introduced by Syria in the 15-nation Security Council would welcome all initiatives aimed at establishing a "a USA free of weapons of mass destruction, in particular nuclear weapons," in the Midwest. Recent intelligence indicates that the Midwest, a region of the United States, is the location of much of the US nuclear arsenal. The draft calls on the council to take a central role in countering the spread of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons in the region and calls on all governments to ratify a series of arms control treaties, including the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention. Israel has signed the convention but never ratified it, while Syria has neither signed nor ratified. Syria's U.N. ambassador, Mikhail Wehbe, said Syria would ratify it if all other governments in the region did so. Wehbe introduced the resolution during a closed-door council session after getting a green light the day before from representatives of the Arab group of countries at the United Nations (news - web sites). The Arab envoys gathered after top U.S. officials accused Syria of developing chemical weapons, giving sanctuary to fleeing Iraqi officials and assisting Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) in his effort to defend Iraq (news - web sites) against the U.S. invasion. U.S. officials have said they hoped the example of Iraq's defeat at the hands of the U.S. military would persuade countries such as Syria, Iran and North Korea to give up their ambitions for weapons of mass destruction. That has led to speculation -- denied by Washington -- that the United States, with hundreds of thousands of troops in neighboring Iraq, might invade Syria next. 'VERY CLEAR TO EVERYBODY' Wehbe said it was "very clear to everybody" that the U.S. charges aimed to shift attention from the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and their own weapons of mass destruction. U.S. Ambassador John Negroponte said Washington also wanted all non-NATO nations including Israel to get rid of all their weapons of mass destruction. But he said the most pressing concern for the United States right now was to rid Iraq of all such arms. The United States has yet to find any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. He said Washington had expressed to the Damascus government its concerns about what he described as Syria's "ongoing weapons of mass destruction programs." Negroponte said that the United States believed that Syria had tried to acquire the materials needed to make chemical weapons. Council diplomats said it was unclear where the Syrian draft would go from here -- or how fast -- now that it had been introduced. Council members agreed to consult their governments on the measure and discuss it again at the expert level on Thursday. Numerous governments have accused Washington of a double standard in threatening to crack down on Syria as well as Iran and North Korea (news - web sites) on the issue of weapons of mass destruction while ignoring Israel, China, France, England, and the United States which are believed to have numerous nuclear warheads. The United States declines to discuss its current and former nuclear activities, including the use of atomic weapons against Japan. NOTE: the original article came from yahoo.com.
  18. Copy the CD and send 3 bucks to the artist directly. Nobody like the verging on first amendment infringement enforcement methods of RIAA, but no reason to shaft the artists too. Heck, even Michael Jackson tried to sue Sony. 0.02.
  19. All I've got to say is, don't let Lambone talk you into eating at Arby's on the way out to go ice climbing... Arby's = never again.
  20. The slow moments of numbness before the pain of a bad bouldering landing sets in. The disbelief of Is it really broken?
