    Update...

We successfully concluded a Kickstarter campaign to make a documentary about my human powered circumnavigation. This campaign concluded on August 18. We are now ramping up with the work while adding talent to the team. The title of the documentary will be "Castaway with Purpose." You can follow our progress on this dedicated site and on this Facebook page.
  2. As promised, here is the KickStarter campaign information. Our campaign recently launched to finance the production costs of the documentary "Castaway with Purpose" -- this will be about my human powered circumnavigation, the Six Summits Project, the loss of Göran Kropp under Air Guitar... You will notice some instances of Frenchman Coulee in the promo. I wanted to post this update to seek your help in spreading the word to your circle of friends, coworkers, employers. This would be a good/cheap sponsorship opportunity for your employer since they can appear as “Producer” – Please see the upper level swags on the below URL: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1215913508/castaway-with-purpose The shorter version of this URL is: http://kck.st/1bN4nUW which will come in handy in Twitter for example where our handles are @erdeneruc and @aroundnover The $350 ticket for a couple on the ROYAL ARGOSY Cruise is a great deal. We would love to have 60 of our supporters there for sure to have a great outing altogether. Thank you for your consideration. Cheers from Sydney (back in Seattle after August 14)

    Update...

Wayne -- I arrived at Seattle Tuesday evening and I will fly back to Sydney to join Nancy on Friday morning. It is all a blur!!! Nancy resigned her job, so we may very well be coming back to Seattle at the end of August. Erden.
  4. My human powered circumnavigation is done as of July after 5 years 11 days. I reached three in the Six Summits Project: Denali, Kosciuszko and Kilimanjaro. Aconcagua, Elbrus and Everest remain. Some media coverage took place, and this weekend I will participate in the Telluride Mountain Film Festival along with Jason Lewis on a panel presentation and a morning coffee talk: Around the World on Human Power You may have already seen the Outside Magazine feature article: Around the World in 1,026 Days Its author Nick Heil will be facilitating the panel discussion. We will soon be announcing a KickStarter campaign for a documentary that we would like to produce about the circumnavigation. There is progress... Cheers. Erden. ------------------------------ Please help Around-n-Over reach the classrooms!
  5. I am not convinced that this sailor chose to be on the southern Indian Ocean in the southern winter for any reason other than the fact that she would have been older than Jessica Watson's age of completion had she waited for the better season to sail those waters. This is the danger of fame and fortune and media obsession attached to the "youngest" claims. The World Sailing Records Council rightly refuses to accept any claims for records from anyone younger than 18. Of course that very point became part of another PR redherring pushed by the Watson team when she fell short on the distance traveled for an official around-the-world record: since she was not old enough, nobody was there to adjudicate her accomplishment, so they could conveniently drop the "shortest orthodromic track of the vessel must be at least 21,600 nautical miles" part of the rules out of their checklist, and still claim the youngest ATW. Shameful behavior... See: Section 26.1.a of Rules Book The coverage of JW in Australia was incessant and nauseating. This circus will go on until a 15 year old or a 14 year old goes out there and finally kills herself. I am not one to say they should put off their dreams, but the focus is wrong in the whole discussion. Had these 16 year olds been encouraged to go do it, because it is the rite of passage for any future great sailor and their path to wisdom, I would have been all supportive. When the word youngest became the focal point, I was turned off.
  6. Please come support the VW youth climbing team. They represent the PNW at these competitions, compete in the Nationals and make it to the world championships regularly...

  13. Pathetic attitude above. I drive a Prius. I also ride a bicycle. Erden.

    Prius vs Jetta TDI

One of the reasons for buying the Prius a couple weeks ago was the WA State sales tax exemption. That savings right there paid for the battery replacement cost that I supposedly will to have way down the line. Erden.

    Prius vs Jetta TDI

Recently got a Prius, happy with it. Averaging 44 mpg in the first 150 miles or so in the city, and improving as I retrain myself in my driving to maximize the mileage. I can probably get over 50 mpg. The Prius battery is under warranty, a non issue... Owned a 1995 Toyota Camry before. Did not go near Detroit products. Erden.
  16. Thanks for replying JosephH. I had to go back to reread your previous sentence in context. We certainly do agree in your last response above. I am hopeful for a more cerebral approach to the world affairs with the new administration under Obama. He will have his plate full from day one... Untold amounts of damage has been done to the world opinion of USA under the Bush-Neocon administration. Erden.
  17. Interesting sentence, I am sure is not intended to be taken verbatim. Before the splintering into various sects, in the Muslim world the Caliph spoke for the Caliphate which contained the ummah, and in the Christian world the Pope spoke for the Christians. Would you put the Christians and fascism together? or should you? After all fascism was a European beast, born in Christian lands... Was Mussolini's brown shirts or Hitler's nazi party practicing Christian fascism, as perhaps the Taliban may have practiced Islamic fascism in your terminology? Is the latter easier sprinkled in your discourse because of your assumption that you are preaching to a Christian audience? Does papal authority exist over the Christians any more than a caliphate exists at all? The last caliph was kicked out of Istanbul on a ship provided by his imperialist sponsors, and the caliphate was officially buried in the pages of history in 1924. Name calling is easy... and it detracts from more sensible content that you may be trying to convey. Erden.
  18. Hello friends. I will be holding a presentation at the Seattle REI on Thursday at 7PM. I will give background information on how the Six Summits Project started, what has been done to date and what the next step is. I will talk about the 312 days that I spent alone on the Pacific Ocean in my rowboat on my way to Kosciuszko. The time spent on the Pacific was especially meaningful for me, because we raised about $47,000 for charity during that crossing to benefit the rural primary school children in regional boarding schools in Turkey. I hope that you can join us. Erden Around-n-Over [img:left]http://www.around-n-over.org/poster_Seattle.gif[/img]
  19. Thanks, guys. The turn out was quite nice and it was wonderful to see friends old and new. Yes, the trip was a bit nutty. As crazy as it seems now, while I was out there on the Pacific, it became the life as I knew it and it was my "normal" existence. It is amazing how much the human mind and the frail human body can endure. Be well. Erden.
  20. Hi all... I had been under the impression that the space we had available at the Winery was for 100 guests. It turns out we can accommodate up to 140 guests. Since alcohol will be served in the establishment, unfortunately children will not be allowed. As per the invitation above, Ali will be consolidating the RSVP's on Saturday, and may be able to intercept your RSVP through Saturday. Looking at the numbers and the extra space available, I think we may still have room if you came down deciding to do so at the last moment... Hope to see friends at the event. Erden.
  21. Sorry - I should have posted this one earlier. We will hold a fundraising gathering at the EBFoote Winery in Burien this Sunday, between 5-7pm. We will look forward to the attendance of friends who have been involved/following the Around-n-Over projects. I will do a presentation there as well... RSVP is best. Please click here for invitation and directions.... Cheers. Erden.
  22. Definitely plan on completing the climb and being on the descent by early afternoon. By 2pm, you will see rain clouds rolling in and lightning activity is not unusual. Remember to research the cable route rappel to return quickly to the Chasm View bivy spot. You can bivy there, have a casual stroll to the base of Casual Route and make quick work of the actual climb. Then you will have plenty of time for returning to the trailhead by the evening after the climb. Make sure to read the Casual Route correctly - there is a traverse to the left after the first couple pitches toward a dihedral system. There was only one pin behind a flake for the entire traverse when I did it back in '89. I was warned that if one attempts the traverse below the actual line, then it becomes much more difficult; that is the "Casualty Route" variation I was told! The 5.10- part is only a half rope length near the top to gain the ledge traverse to the left before exiting the face. The rest of the climb was superbly enjoyable easier stuff. Have fun. It is a great location for a climb. Erden.
  23. Hi Porter. Rowing an ocean as a workout plan? It certainly kept me away from the refrigerator and easy access to fattening food and I had physical work to do everyday by rowing the boat. It works for me to use the journey as a training regimen, and to get stronger over time during the journey. Regards to your father the ancient mariner. The high seas solidarity demonstrated by the seamen out there checking on me to see that I was alright was examplary, especially by the fishermen. Of course in the end, I sought the help of Frabelle Fishing Corporation to pick up my boat on day 312. Erden.
  24. Now that sounds familiar ;-) Çok teşekkür ederim. I am going to be flying back from Manila to Seattle arriving this weekend. I will be doing the rounds to see friends again beginning next week. I will have to keep the cc.com pub gatherings in mind as well. A quick way to see many friends... Best. Erden.
  25. Agreed, catbirdseat. I was trying to do that on the accomplishments page. The site needs some reorganization for sure. I will now have some time to worry about such things while spending time at home. Erden.
