    Helmets

I certainly am not a helmet Nazi, but there's that saying, "If you choose to not wear a helmet, you probably don't have anything to protect anyway." So here's a question: What do you guys do when someone yells "Rock!" Do you: 1) Look up to see if you can avoid it, and catch it in the teeth? 2) Duck your head knowing that the single baseball sized rock that's Plinko-ing down the gully will land right where you're standing...but on top of your helmet? Good lesson for everyone.
  4. That's why I switched from drinking purified water to beer. I'm much happier now. As my old climbing buddy used to say, "You get water with beer, but you don't beer with water."
  5. Hey Parker, To be fair, you can't see a summit register from a neighboring peak. (BTW - that's supposed to be a winking smilie , not a thumbs down. I checked the wrong circle) [This message has been edited by EddieE (edited 09-23-2001).]
  6. I used to wear liners, but haven't since I got sick of buying new ones every time they got lost in the laundry. I wear Smartwool now in my plastics and leathers and find that keeping my feet dry is much more effective at keeping blisters away than crappy socks and liners. Of course I keep my boots pretty loose on the approach and only tighten them when I'm climbing.
  7. If you add up the bombings of American embassies overseas, and now the second attack on the World Trade Center, American casualties in this "war" are already in the thousands. I think people are starting to realize that, unfortunately, we are spiralling towards a ground war. I wish there were a different way. Complete destruction of an unnoccupied city? Where? Do we tell the occupants to get out before we launch the attack? With what - nukes? You still haven't answered that question. To answer yours: Yes, the Islamic Religion treats women very much differently than we do here - and the extremists abuse and mistreat them. However I don't think its because we allow Hillary Clinton to hold office is the reason they think we're the Great Satan. And anyways, they aren't trying to convert us...they're trying to get us off their land. Bin Laden thinking he represents the Nation of Islam is the same as Hitler thinking he represented Christians. You are certainly entitled to your opinions, but I'm afraid your attitude that all people of Islamic faith thought this was a good idea have led to cars being doused with gasoline in Seattle, and people getting shot in Arizona. Not everyone has as much self control as you do. [This message has been edited by EddieE (edited 09-17-2001).] [This message has been edited by EddieE (edited 09-17-2001).]
  8. BR - Since you're making assumptions of what I think about this issue, me and my conservative, private university edumacated self should be clearer. I agree with the picture above, and I absolutely agree with a strong, swift military answer to terrorists and criminals. Notice I don't mention people who are Islamic - big difference. What I find to be a knee-jerk reaction from you is the suggestion we drop a nuke on Afghanistan, which not only wouldn't solve any problem - but rather create a hundred new ones. Even conventional missiles would be a waste of time - fifteen million dollar rockets to blow up a fifteen dollar tent doesn't get you real far. If you think we can do this without loss of American life, you're in la-la land. "We are hated in the world of Islam because in their minds, our values represent a threat to theirs." Oh, is that all? I'm not going to even comment on this one... I don't know you, so I'm not going to guess what you're educational background is, or what your belief system is, but if you're going to try to climb an offwidth - don't show up with a rack of stopper nuts (or if you're going to prompt a debate like this, at least pick up a history book). 9. So we should do what? Drop a nuke on someone? Who?

How many of you guys have taken advantage of that liberal return policy, and yet still trash REI? They certainly aren't the same company they were when they started, but everyone, including REI, knows that. I think it's irresponsible to have non-climbers selling technical gear and the REI brand is a knock-off of last year's technology, but they don't misrepresent themselves as the experts in the field anymore. If I need advice on gear I know not to go there, just like I know not to walk into Eddie Bauer. That's what Pro Mountain Sports, Feathered Friends and Marmot is for.

  18. I was running up Mt. Hood's south side a couple of years ago and ran into a bunch of Japanese exchange students on their way back down. I guess they decided to turn around at the 'schrund, but had ice axes being carried in all ways except the correct. They were wearing jeans, hooded sweatshirts and tennis shoes so it didn't surprise me when I saw one slip and start doing backspins for about 300 feet down a steeper part of the slope. She managed not to impale herself, and she slowly got up and kept walking away.
  19. "We can easily become as much slaves to precaution as we can to fear. Although we can never rivet our fortune so tight as to make it impregnible,we may by our excessive prudence squeeze out of the life that we are guarding so anxiously all the adventurous quality that makes it worth living." -Randolph Bourne
  20. I'll only rope up if the terrain: 1) makes me nervous 2) is able to be protected or 3) allows a self arrest by me or my partners otherwise it's every climber for themselves.

  23. I did the North Ridge a few years ago and had a great time. We did it earlier in the season and didn't need to put our crampons once and didn't bring a rope. We got lucky and found that there was ice keeping the scree frozen together, so it was like walking up a bumpy sidewalk.
