Jordan - in that upper gully, just before, or as you got to the difficulties, if you would have looked left(not very intuitive), there was a much better route. it is class 3 and solid rock and would have led you to the stout tree. for details see: http://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7976622 credit big steve for giving me the heads up on this excellent variation. :>) ps - someday i hope to do another trip with you :>)

crossed early winter's creek and did big snagtooth 6-7-06. we looked for a place to ford in the morning on the way up, but water was way to fast - even more so when we came back. so, we crossed via a cheval on a sloping log. looking at it was very scary for me - tons of fast white water below. but, once i saw my buddies cross and i got going, it was not too bad. here's a picture:
