Yes this is true. After my group rapped to our bivy site we climbed from there never actually cresting the ridge untill a few pitches before the gendarme. We passed over lots of snow but you are right probably 100+ ft below the crest.

Thanks for posting the conditions as I was just about to. I had an AWESOME time on the CNR as well the days before you. Took 3 days (Friday- hiked to toe of north ridge from Ingalls TH, Saturday- Bivy at 8400', Sunday- Summit and Cascadian descent.) We found meltwater trickles to fill up plus lots of snow on the upper, west side of ridge where we camped. I'm a sasquatch of the size 16 species and know the struggle for specialty footwear. For ice climbing, I managed to fit into a used pair of U.S. size 15 Koflach's I bought at AAI. With superfeet insoles, they've worked great, even for hiking. I prefered plastic since they were extra stiff and super warm. When they wear out, I'm eyeing the Lowe Civetta Extreme GTX which go up to size 16!! B.t.w. I found Scarpa carried their Matrix Randonnee boot to Euro size 50 (US 15). Happy big shoe hunting.

Phenominally done! Way to take advantage of the weather Lisa. So this climb IS technically a winter ascent, your first?, on Mt. Rainier, no less! Awesome =o) I'd like to do this someday! Very fun reading your posts.

Uhhh.. Yea.. That was my friend and I. Ridiculous! The party ahead of us finished the last pitch in the dark, while we still had 2 to go. Considering we made a pileup of mistakes before that, (route info left at car, no water, hiking 2 miles past the wall in the first place etc...), I watched my friend come to the top finally 5 minutes after the sunrise!! I got off route at Library ledge (going up the dihedral crack) and had to traverse right on tiny chickenheads to get back on route. Rock climbing in the dark is interesting! I was able to call my GF and tell her I wouldn't be making dinner or breakfast...

I've read in a Falcon Guide that the bergshrund can be impassible in late season? seems you passed with no problem.
