There is no practical reason for this post, but I have been curious for a while as to what the term "RP" stands for. (Yes, I know what RP's are, just not what the "R" and the "P" stand for.) Do any of you know?

Junior Alpinist,
RP are his initials - I think it's Roland Pollard.

Per Greg Child's "Climbing, The Complete Reference", RPs were named after the German-Australian inventor Roland Paulingk and he introduced them in the '70s in Australia.

Yeah, it's "Roland Pauligk" that is the correct spelling - as in the Pauligk Pillar in Red Rocks.
But everyone knows it really means Really Pathetic pro. Back in the day they recommended placing clusters of 5-6 of them so if you lobbed onto them the first four or five would probably break wires or pull but that would absorb enough energy (like a screamer) that the 6th one would stop you.

Actually, bolts are appropriate when placed on the lead where no other reasonable pro will work. I prefer to toprope, rather than beat the rock into submission in the name of "leading" on rap-placed bolts. If you rap bolt, then "RP" stands for real puss.

Ok if you say so. I thought they stood for Real Pricey --> meaning the cost of your hostpital bills after you spill off on them while free climbing not aiding?

Yeah, there's no sense in being foolish. But if it's safety we're after, let's top-rope. If it's leading and adventure/thrills we want, give the rock a chance: start from the ground.

Bolts are beautiful works of art - representing the triumph of the human soul over fear of commitment and danger - and should be placed everywhere to enhance persons' appreciation of nature. This includes up the Peace Arch and on the Fremont Troll.

Peace Arch, Fremont Troll...perfect. I'll help you drill. I've climbed on some artificial climbs, glued up on bridge supports, and just had a blast.
