Hi - looking for any help with basics - I will be in Seattle mid August with option for several days of hiking in general area. Thinking about going to both Mt Rainier area and Mt St Helens area with rental car.

Primary interest is day hikes from 3 - 10 miles non-technical with meadows and Summits if possible. Would like to find lodges or hotels with good hikes starting on property and within short dives of property.

Any recommendations for lodging, trails, forum threads or books would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Mt rainier area would have the closest lodging, but it will be more expensive at least 120$, and there will be tons of people. If you don't want that, and are willing to drive longer to trailhead Mt St Helens area is where you want to go.

Hey Toro! You should check out Mount St. Helens for sure! You won't get any meadows up the climb/hike route, but it's incredible landscape. I'm biased, mind you - I volunteer on the mountain. That said, it's awesome.

You can stay at the Lone Fir Resort in Cougar, which is about 10 miles from the TH. Permits are usually $22 - you'll have to find one through Purmit.com since they sold out a long time ago. It gets you above 4800ft on the mountain. Of course, there are TONS of beautiful places around MSH. :)
