French windsurfer crosses Pacific

Tuesday, November 4, 2003 Posted: 10:02 AM EST (1502 GMT)

PARIS, France (Reuters) -- A French windsurfer, Raphaela Le Gouvello, has completed the first solo crossing of the Pacific from Peru to Tahiti.

The 43-year-old arrived in Papeete on Monday after travelling 4,455 miles in 89 days and seven hours, her Web site reported.

She has already completed solo crossings of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

She was escorted into Papeete harbor by a flotilla and met on the quayside by Tahitian local government leader Gaston Flosse.

"You have achieved something quite extraordinary," he told Le Gouvello.

She followed the route of the famous Kon Tiki expedition made by Thor Heyerdahl in 1947 in a papyrus vessel.

Her "home" for three months was a 25.6 foot (7.80 meter) board on which she slept.

She contacted her back-up crew in Paris twice a day to report her position.

Le Gouvello completed the first crossing of the Atlantic by a woman windsurfer in 2000, taking 58 days to sail from Senegal to Martinique.

Two years later she crossed the Mediterranean from Marseille to Sidi Bou Said in 10 days.

Just when I thought I figured out everything, Hans throws a Blix into my plans grin.gif

I have been following her progress for a while now. Her web site is: Raphaela Le Gouvello and she deserves a toast bigdrink.gif

As for the wind is aid, or sails are aid discussion, a windsurfer would wear a chest harness to hang all day, day after day in such a crossing; that's like the leashless argument for ice climbing. Now, hanging off a windsurf sail my friend, is aid in a fun sorta way cool.gif

sails are aid. this was discussed a long time ago. rolleyes.gif

Does that mean a boat with oars is aid too?

yes. erden has to either paddle with his hands or use his boat like a kick board with no swim fins allowed.

Sails are aid. Skis are aid. Ice tools are aid. Snowshoes are aid. Bicycles are aid. A warm jacket is aid. Oars are aid. A gps is aid. A boat is aid.

WTF? Where do you draw the line? Personally I think Erden is nuts to do this trip in a row boat. I know the oceans are way more unforgiving than any mountain on this planet. I also would encourage him to use a sail boat for his ocean voyages even if there was no motor in it for emergencies. I would be no less impressed for him doing this voyage using a sailboat. Shackleton used one, Tilman used one and they are legends. If he dies in a rowboat what will we say then? "What a nut" or "at least he died what he loved doing?" Erden has loved ones and he needs to consider that in his choices of crossing oceans. The odds are stacked against him. That is a reality and nobody wants to say it. Well I said it. I just don't want to see him become another statistic on that memorial. Erden, please use a sailboat!

Crossing the ocean in a small sailboat is no piece of cake, but at least it can be made completely water tight. The need for oar ports makes row boats difficult to seal against the elements.

they can make flexible glove thingys over the ports like in germ isolation confused.gif

dude, i was like, only joking, ok?

erden kicks ass and we all know that. so actually, yes, if i was him i'd go for the sailboat. i think sails would still accomplish what he is basically aiming for. we use snow, gravity etc. using the wind still fits the bill.

Duhhh, I know that was a joke. I just used it as a jumping off place to make a point about where Erden chooses to draw the line. I believe he is coming from a place where this endevour has to be totally human powered and he considers sailing beyond that. But to me using the wind would not deminish the human powered effort because sailing solo across any ocean would take incredible human effort, both physical and mental. So as I said, using a sailboat would not in any way make this endeavor less impressive, imo.

for that matter how can you call riding a bike or rowing a boat human powered unless you yourself smelted the aluminum for the bike frame or cut the tree for the wood for the boat. obviously swimming or walking are the only ETHICAL options tongue.gif
