  1. The Mazamas Expedition Committee and KAF Adventures are proud to present Jason Wheeler, and his story of the Cassin Ridge. Situated on the South Face of Denali (20,320’), the Cassin Ridge is one of the most iconic and well-known climbs the world over. 11,000’ of sustained technical difficulties on one of the coldest and most committing faces in the Alaska Range, the Cassin Ridge is not only esthetically amazing, but the climbing, history of ascents and role in modern “alpine-style” climbing set it apart from any other route in the world. The presentation will include in-depth looks at the history of the climb beginning with the 1961 ascent by the legendary Riccardo Cassin, to the progress of light and fast techniques by Mugs Stumps. Jason will talk candidly about his personal development as a Northwest climber, and what it feels like to climb over two vertical miles in 50 hours in Alaska. A look at the gear and techniques of climbing “light and fast”; and how you can apply it to Northwest mountains and ranges. Jason Wheeler was born in Portland, Oregon and began climbing at age 12 with a successful summit of Mount Hood. He has not stopped living his life in the mountains since then; a professional mountain guide/instructor who has climbed and taught extensively in Alaska, Argentina, Chile, Peru and the Western United States with over 200 summits and countless days climbing Jason speaks with the knowledge and ease of a seasoned alpinist. Come discuss your next objective, past climbs or climbing technique and learn from someone who has been there. A note from the Presenter: “In doing this presentation I hope, more than anything, to share the lessons that I have learned and pass on the hard-earned knowledge the mountains have given me. Come talk ideas, learn, share and be in the community of people that love the mountains!” – Jason Wheeler Tickets are $10 advance purchase from the MMC or $15 at the door. All proceeds will benefit the Mazama Expedition Grants Fund.
  2. The Mazamas Expedition Committee hosts International Mountain Guide Jason Edwards for a presentation on climbing and exploring a local favorite, Mount Rainier. Jason, who has reached the summit of Everest on multiple occasions, and who has climbed the famed Seven Summits, talks about his adventures in reaching the summit of Mount Rainier over 300 times. Jason is an IMG guide and first climbed Mount Rainier on July 17, 1976. Tickets are $10 for Mazama members and $15 for non-members. All proceeds will benefit the Mazama Expedition Grants Fund.
  3. The First Ascent team is home safe from a successful expedition to Antarctica and Peter will be in Portland next week for a exciting show.
  4. The Mazamas Expedition Committee hosts world-renown climber Peter Whittaker for a presentation of his January 2011 First Ascent Expedition to the summit of Mount Vinson and the establishment of several new ski descents in Antarctica. 5. I am trying to spread awareness of the following grant available from the Mazama Expedition Committee. If you are planning a significant climb or expedition for 2011 please take a look and consider applying. Alpine Adventure Grant This grant is for non-Mazama members and members alike. The goal of this grant is to promote adventurous climbing and provide resources for climbers to explore and attempt challenging climbs. While trips do not need to be at the leading edge of alpinism, special consideration will be given to expeditions contributing to the sport of mountaineering and alpine climbing by attempting new routs or significant repeat ascents. Weighted consideration will be given to climbs exploring off the beaten path and lesser know mountain ranges of the world. Climbers do not have to be Mazama members to be eligible for this expedition grant. Application Deadline is December 31 http://www.mazamas.org/your/adventure/starts-here/C100/
  6. Just a reminder this is tonight and is going to be a great show!
  7. World renowned alpine climber Colin Haley will be in Portland on Thursday, September 30th at 7pm at the Mazama Mountaineering Center to present a new route put up by himself and Norwegian climber Bjørn-Eivind Årtun called "Dracula" on the SE face of Alaska's Mount Foraker earlier this year. On this trip Colin and Bjorn spent the first 3 weeks acclimating and attempting to break the speed record for climbing the Cassin Ridge on Denali. After reaching the summit of Denali they headed for Mount Foraker and waited for a weather window. When a small window opened up they headed out with day packs on what turned out to be a 72 hour push. Read Colin's blog about the climb and come see and hear his presentation of the climb. Tickets are $10 at the door and proceeds will benefit the Mazama Expedition Grants Fund. At a young age Colin has established himself among the top alpine climbers of the world. He is a Patagonia Ambassador and just a nice, humble guy to listen and talk to. Last year he gave a very well received slide show for the Mazamas and it sounds like this one is not to be missed.
  8. Great TR and I share the same sentiments every time I return from an international trip. A few days after returning home I start daydreaming about when and where my next trip will be. Too bad it takes so long to save up enough vacation time! I might just have to resort back to being LLC...
